My first book came out because I was dedicated to what I felt was a last bit of freedom. When I started my corporate job again, a bit of the freedom was borrowed away from my writing, but I didn't give up. Creative writing is what drives me, it makes me feel alive, and there is nothing better than reading a book that I've written. For today's #Thoughtsthursday, Craftsmanship Judging - Don't point out any flaws or mistakes. This is such an easy thing to do in judging, you get so involved in explaining that you may accidentally point out mistakes. The thing is, judges may not notice the mistakes if you point them out. Also, the point of judging is to highlight what you made, so by pointing out flaws, that detracts from the work you did do. Be proud of what you worked on! We are all our greatest critics, and we all know where all the flaws are on our own work. But the judges are seeing it brand-new with fresh eyes who may not hone into every single flaw that you see. Instead of pointing out the flaws - put the spotlight on the things you are proud of! What did you do for the first time, or what you spent hours on that turned out well. Could even be a part you changed that you are super proud of the end result! They also spend a good amount of time in indecision, self-doubt and saying 'yes' doing things they resent later. It not so much about being ultra productive. Our next #thoughtsthursday topic is: Research stage set up - what they have to offer, shape and measurements Research for the stage is a very important part of planning a skit. Some of the reasons it's important to research the setup: 1. If you have any set pieces, it's very important to know where you want the set as well as if it will fit on the stage. It is better to know what size stage you are working with when you have sets mixed in. If you can rehearse with the stage dimensions for that comp, it will allow you to better plan out the timing of your skit, and rehearsals will flow better for final stage performance. 2. It's important to know where you can store your set or how it's going to get on stage. This item may require reaching out to the cosplay department. There is nothing worse than planning a whole skit with set pieces, getting to the con, and finding out that there is no place to store the set or that it is tricky to get onto the stage. 3. It's always important to learn the stage dimensions to also learn the shape. Some conventions have a runway aspect to their stages, which can be cool to add to skits. So doing that research will better let you tailor your skit for that con's stage. Today's topic is: Talk to the cosplay head - there are no stupid questions. I think this one is very important, both as a cosplayer, judge and as a cosplay head. It is SO important to be able to get your questions answered. I am the type of person who wants all the information before I do something. I have emailed a lot of con's cosplay departments clarifying questions because I wasn't sure about something. I am of the opinion, if you are wondering or worried about something - reach out and ask. As a cosplay head - I would rather have someone ask me a question so they can get the answers they want, as well as so they can feel more comfortable before heading into the contest. We would rather questions be asked first, than run into problems at the event itself, and some of those times may be something we cannot do anything about at that point. This week's #thoughtsthursday is: Stage Ninjas! Not all cons allow stage ninjas, but if they do and you have them, you usually note it during registration. If you are not sure of the con's policy on stage ninjas - email them! Stage ninjas are a great way to add more dynamic to your skit or help bring your set items on and off the stage. Some cons may have a time restriction to getting sets on and off the stage. Make sure you practice this in your own time as well as if you have a chance to do a stage rehearsal. Theater side note - having stage ninja's wear black will help if you don’t want them to be seen or to distract the audience. One final note: Check the competition rules to see how stage ninjas may or may not be used. There are some competitions I have seen that allow stage ninjas to have a cosplay on and help on stage but some say otherwise or may not allow stage ninjas at all. This weeks Thought Thursday is: Handlers Handlers are the true MVPs of cosplay. Whether they are there to just help you get ready or if they are there to help you move throughout the con or get onto stage, they are a vital role. When you want to use a handler for cosplay competitions - you will usually have to let the contest know - either at check in or during sign ups. This allows them to know how many people will be in the green room. Your handler should be in the green room if they are: helping you navigate/mobility, assisting you on stage or you have a complicated cosplay that needs some assistance. Please keep in mind that green rooms are really crowded and busy places, so if you don't need a handler or assistance, have them enjoy the show and cheer you on! Since I had made a story asking about things that are good to know going into cosplay competitions, I decided to break it down into various posts and stories. So today is the first Thoughts Thursday! Disclaimer: These are from my personal experiences and opinions. How to best present to the judges in the workmanship time slot Your time will vary based on the convention. This is the biggest advice I can give from my experience as a contestant and as a judge. Advice 1: Plan what you have to say in advance. You may not have to make a scrip, but know how and what you wanna say. I don't make a script, but I mentally note what I want to say. Advice 2: Have a method on how you want to present your outfit - examples - top to bottom or inside out. I personally like going with how I put it on, so I start with hoop, corset, support garments, and work my way out. That way, I touch on everything that I put on. Advice 3: To help support #2, I also put my build book in the same order, so the judges can follow along. That way, as I explain a process or detail, it will be easy to follow or find in the book. By now you probably realised that I’m an avid nature lover, especially when it comes to trees. Specifically bonsai trees. They were always my dad’s favourites - he admired the people who dedicated themselves to these trees, wishing that he would also find the time to start his own. But that time never came.
