Today I taught Teen Art Camp @berkshireartcenter in Pittsfield at our great studio space on North St. My prompt for the “ Tiny places” theme of the art camp week, is miniature Art Museum Gallery. Each young artist learned to make an “ Idea Generator “ sketch, then a torn paper mini- collage using “painting with paper” technique. After that each kid also made a miniature acrylic painting on canvas panel. They painted tiny wooden easels on which to display their artwork for tomorrow’s Art Show for family & friends. I am so proud of them for taking the challenge and focusing so intently on their small scale creations. Today I taught a really cool group of Summer Art Camp kids about how to make a miniature accordion fold artist book! The camp theme for this week is “Tiny Places” so my challenge for these teen artists is to create a miniature library of miniature books. They’ll invite their families & others to enjoy their miniature books set up as a mini library for the art show on the final day of camp. So, in that spirit of collaboration, the kids constructed their mini books & proceeded to fill the pages with wonderful & varied art including: an illustrated book ( colored pencil) of 18 original Haiku Poems, a Book of Flags depicting international flag drawings in colored pencil complete with “hello” in every language represented by a flag, a graphic story called Mr Cool drawn in pen & ink, The Weather Book filled with delicate textural weather collages using decorative papers, A Rainbow Book in words and images, a mini Pattern & Design collection book composed with carefully curated decorative papers, a book filled with tiny collage art on each page, composed of torn, cut and pasted postage stamps representing many different cultures & countries, The Stuff Book made with postage stamps, tiny portraits & a mini library card. I was amazed by the intricate, detailed artwork on such a tiny scale. And by the diversity of ideas. This tiny house was handmade by me using paper, cardboard, paint, felt, velvet, sari silk, shimmery fabric, Swarovski crystals, glass beads, resin, glue, wire, polymer clay, and vintage components. This miniature piece of art measures 4 inches wide with 2 inch tall walls. It took 4 hours to make start to finish. It’s super tiny and cozy. My main goal with these small spaces is to transport the viewer to a magical place within their hands. These tiny works of art help to ease anxiety and bring out our inner child by taking us to a literal happy place. They are fun to explore visually and help inspire daydreaming and sense of containment and peace. The windows were hand crafted using clear resin and wire. I love the way the light enters and changes the feeling to the room. The tiny bubbles were an accident but I like how it gives the impression of an old glass window pane. The transparent “glassware” in front of the window glows when the light shines in, similar to vintage glass on a shelf in a shop or in front of a kitchen window.
