Hand-carved Biscuit Moulds Our hand carved biscuit moulds are an example of how traditional hand-craft and baking come together; turning ordinary biscuit making into a work of art. Each mould is carefully carved, each one slightly different and with a unique identity of its own. No two biscuit moulds are the same. The biscuit making process...well that’s easy. They work perfectly with any biscuit dough recipe, though shortbread is perfect. Roll the dough into small balls and press each dough ball into the mould and then gently tap out onto the baking tray. If you aren’t into biscuit baking, we think these hand-carved moulds are simply beautiful objects in their own right. They make unique ornaments either on their own or in a collection. With so many different biscuit mould designs, the difficulty is choosing which ones to have. They are always a point of conversation in our home, when you tell the story about what they are for, and of course when you share the delicious results of your biscuit baking. I've made 4 major career changes in my life and I have never regretted any of these decisions. They were all stepping stones to get me to my new path - health coaching. How did I know it was the right time to leave? I wasn't growing anymore, I wasn't learning in the way I wanted to learn, sometimes, I wasn't appreciated for the work I did, other times I just wasn't happy. Most importantly, anything that costs your health (mental and physical) is a definite sign to leave. Never make anything else a priority over your health. If it's impacting your health negatively - leave! Those were all signs for me to go try something new. Everything I learned in all my other career paths have set me up for the unique skills I have now to apply to my new career. Remember, learning, having an open mind and following your heart is the key. It will guide you to what you were meant to do. If you don't know what that is yet, don't worry. Just do things you enjoy and try to learn something new every day. That formula will guide you. The story of Turkish Delight Most people only recognise and associate Turkish delight from the movie, The Chronicles of Narnia or childhood memories of the chocolate covered Turkish Delight made by Fry’s. However, Turkish delights have a rich history, and it is more than just a sweet treat. In fact, did you know that it is one of the oldest sweets in the world? There are several stories about the history of Turkish delights, also known as Lokum. Lokum derives from the Arabic word ‘rahat ul-hulküm’ which means ‘comforting to the throat’. The most eminent story goes, an Ottoman Sultan summoned his confectionary chef and ordered him to create a sweet treat that was light on the throat and his tooth. Through this, Turkish delight was born. He then used it to impress women and to restore peace throughout the palace. Surprisingly, it worked as arguments in the palace stopped and the Sultan always insisted on a plate of Turkish Delights along with their daily feasts. Nevertheless, the history indicates that it was Haci Bekir Effendi who first developed Turkish delights as we know today. In 1777, Haci Bekir Effendi migrated to Istanbul and opened his own confectionery shop where he sold Turkish delights for more than two centuries. His business became a success and has grown significantly – it is the oldest company in Turkey and one of the 100 oldest companies in the world. The original confectionary store is now being managed by the fifth and sixth generations of his descendants.
Bubble Towels These are our ‘Bubble’ towels ... & I have to say it was love at first sight. With their gorgeous bright colours and bubbly texture ...what’s not to love! Venturing away from the traditional turkish peshtemal, our Bubble towels are not a flat weave.... but a looped weave. In fact, they are more like what we know as a terry towel or ‘havlu’ as they are known in Turkey. Inspired by the handwoven peshtemals, they have the texture and design of a turkish towel and beautifully hand twisted tassels. Super big and snuggly, they are perfect for bath or beach time. A bit about the history of ‘havlu’ - the indispensable terry towel that we all know and love..... ‘Havlu’ means ‘with loops’ in Turkish and quite simply describes the looped weave used to achieve the textured terry towel fabric. The terry towel that we all know and love, was first brought to the UK from Turkey in the 1850s by the famous towel company W.M Christy & Sons Ltd. A long established manufacturer of household linens and the inventor of the first industrially produced looped cotton, Christy’s son discovered peshtemals while travelling in Istanbul. He worked with Turkish weavers to develop the method for weaving the looped pile fabric that we now know as terry towelling. The first Christy towel factory opened in 1850.
