Hey everyone, Holly here 💕 You may have noticed that we have not posted on here in literally 4 months 😅 Jordan and I have been running Trash Planet solo for nearly 4 years and to be honest we both got really in our own heads for a few months, and needed a bit of a social media break for a while to deal with our mental health! I absolutely love Trash Planet, it's my baby, but working on it for 4 years from our flat without seeing other humans sometimes for weeks on end got a bit much for us! So, many apologies for being MIA on here, and for being slow with replying to messages, comments and emails in general! It's still just the 2 of us running this biz, so when we are both out of action for a bit, we don't have a team to fall back on! But anyways... WE ARE BACK! We have some cool things coming up, including some new styles, a restock, a sale and also a (potential) REBRAND. 🤜🤛 THE TIME OF MEAT IS OVER! Here’s why: 1. Meat consumption is a leading cause for climate change Animal agriculture is one of the largest contributors to climate change and deforestation. According to the World Bank, animal agriculture is culpable for nearly 91 percent of Amazon destruction. What’s more, the meat industry generates more greenhouse gases than all modes of transportation in the world combined. In fact, even without fossil fuels, we will exceed our 565-gigaton CO2e limit by 2030—all from raising animals for food. 2. Animal agriculture consumes a lot of resources It reportedly takes 576 gallons of water to produce one pound of pork, 880 gallons of water to produce one gallon of milk, and a whopping 1,799 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef. But it’s not just water that the meat industry wastes. A pound of beef requires 13 percent more fossil fuel to produce than a pound of soy. 3. Leather tanning is both toxic and dangerous The tanning process is toxic but required to turn a raw animal skin into a durable fashion material that doesn't biodegrade while you're wearing it. Leather tanning is a highly water-intensive process, and it creates a large amount of wastewater, with a heavy pollutant load. A toxic stew of chemicals are used, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, lead, dyes and cyanides; and most leather produced in the world today is chrome-tanned, releasing carcinogenic Chromium IV into the water. This is such a poisonous chemical that – as a result of stringent laws that regulate its use in the US and Europe – many tanneries in those regions have had to close. Unfortunately those same regulations don't apply to where the majority of the world's tanneries are based, in developing countries, and these serve luxury and fast fashion brands alike. This waste runs off into local water sources in countries like Bangladesh, poisoning entire ecosystems and giving tannery workers skin cancer at rapid rates.
