In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he had a string of hit records produced by LEE HAZLEWOOD, which were noted for their characteristically "twangy" sound, including "Movin' n' Groovin'", "Rebel-'Rouser", "Peter Gunn", "Because They're Young" or "Bobbie". DUANE EDDY devised a technique of playing lead on his guitar's bass strings to produce a low, reverberant "twangy" sound. DUANE EDDY had sold 12 million records by 1963. In the 1970s the for me best guitarist ever had a successful comeback with "Play Me Like You Play the Guitar". DUANE EDDY's "Rebel Rouser" was featured in "Forrest Gump" (1994). OLIVER STONE's "Natural Born Killers" used "The Trembler", a track written by DUANE EDDY and RAVI SHANKAR. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2008. For an 80th-birthday tour in 2018, DUANE EDDY returned to the UK in concerts with Liverpudlian singer-songwriter ROBERT VINCENT, performing on October 23 at the London Palladium and October 30 at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. DUANE EDDY died of cancer in Franklin, Tennessee, on April 30, 2024, four days after his birthday, at the age of 86. My wish to do an interview with him will not come true. R.I.P. Duane Eddy, 1 of the 2 greatest Rock’n’Roll Guitar Instrumentalists of the 50s & 60s (the other being Link Wray.) I had this 45 at 8 years old, 1963. “Boss Guitar” was the hit, with the Rebelettes on vocals, featuring Darlene Love. The sinister B-side, “The Desert Rat,” is one of my favorite moody instrumentals ever. I saw Duane Eddy in the mid-80s, prior to his “comeback” with Art of Noise. I didn’t have time to go through all my 45s to locate my copy of this pic-sleeve which I had Duane sign. I was probably 29 or 30 when I saw him, had many of his Jamie and RCA LPs for years. For those in Boston who were fans of The Turbines and Lyres, the late Jack Hickey was also at that show and had his guitar signed by Duane Eddy.
