I’m a big fan of machine age and atomic-era furniture and lamps. Particularly items that look like they were in some mad scientist’s lab. “Fallout” has really inspired my taste in decor — even before it was a show. I’ve been hunting for a machine age/atomic era floor lamp for our living room, so Valerie and I have been hitting the occasional thrift store and antique shop. We popped into an antique shop today and saw many lamps, but they were all kind of gaudy and flowery for my taste. We got to a final section, and Valerie spotted this pretty cool 1950s Dazor Floating Fixture magnifying glass/desk lamp. It had no price, so we inquired. It wasn’t for sale but belonged to the manager/owner’s husband. She actually called him up, and he said he’d sell it for $35. I was pretty much like, “Shut up and take my money.” It just needs a new bulb. Super sweet monster mail call... Tales to Astonish 29 with a cover date of March 1962 and a release date of December 5th, 1961. This is a special one since I've tried in several auctions but never managed to acquire this issue until now. I even ordered a copy off eBay, but it was lost (probably sold off of eBay - I did get reimbursed so all good). This has to be one of the coolest/scariest Kirby monster covers. These flying "beasts" look really frightening and ultra-violent. This is about as scary as you can get in the post-code, pre-hero, early 60's monster comic category. Look at the beast with the spear blade and imagine that tearing into you as you're herded from the city. 🔥 And as is usually the case in these types of Marvel monster books, the creatures are an orange-brown color. That makes them really stand out brightly on top of the opposite color blue sky and jump right off the page. Someday I may do a study to figure out the percentage of brown monsters vs the other color monsters in the 130 monster books with early 60's cover dates that I am targeting as my collector goal. I'd guess it's about 70% or so brown vs other. With this issue I now have 114 done and have only 16 left to have them all! I only have 4 more TtA to go on that list, 4 Amazing Adult Fantasy, 6 ToS and 1 each left on ST and JiM. 💣 There are a couple somewhat expensive ones left to go to finish this goal (Fin Fang Foom in ST 89 & Groot in TtA 13) plus lots of what are termed "prototype" issues - where they took an old idea from one of these monster comics to make up a new silver hero or villain. And yes, as I always do, I am again sharing the short, little Steve Ditko story (4 pages plus a splash page usually). Enjoy the obscure little horror tale entitled "The Last Laugh!" Climate change and the geology of the Pajarito Plateau - where Los Alamos is situated - has shaped the lives of the people who have inhabited it for over 11,000 years. Paleoindian hunters were the first to use the Plateau. They followed the movement of large, now-extinct species, such as mammoths. Warming temperatures and the extinction of many large species ended their lifestyle. Then the gatherers arrived. Nomadic groups adapted to climate change by eating smaller game supplemented by plants, fruits and nuts. They moved less, but still followed the seasonal availability of food. Around 1150, Ancestral Pueblo people moved into the area bringing dry farming techniques and settled. Their villages grew to over 400 people. The dramatic cliffs of Frijoles Canyon, that we visited while at Los Alamos, supported that settlement. “Tuff”, which is ash from ancient volcanic eruptions, weathers to produce habitable caves and is soft enough for those with rudimentary stone-age tools to excavate. So the settlers enlarged the cliff openings and used Tuff blocks to build apartment-like homes along the cliff faces with petroglyphs above. They remained here until the 1500’s when a severe drought saw them leave for the Rio Grande. We can’t be the only Los Alamos visitors that have pondered on the immediate juxtaposition of this “stone-age” living, just a few miles from the extraordinary birth of the “atomic age”, with the uncomfortable if necessarily fleeting thought, that the later may one day reduce us to something close to the former. Back in Sante Fe we spent yesterday being uplifted by the art of “Canyon Road”; Sante Fe has more than 300 galleries. Mandy Heaven! We normally cook in the Trailer but we came to Sante Fe to also enjoy the food and try New Mexican wine (oldest wine growing region in the US) and its beer. “Cayote Cafe” once helped establish South Western Cuisine as a style all of its own, and that’s where we ate last night. So breaking the theme of this post we neither hunted, gathered, cooked or indeed washed up! And there wasn’t a drought!

Cow Puncher Comics #6, 1949. Avon Periodicals, Inc. This gorgeous Pre-Code quarterly "headlight" bondage cover was created by Walter Johnson. This comic was first on sale March 6th, 1949. I selected the Kit West story, "Murder In The Stockade." What a cool "Skull" splash-page! Kit is a hot, nosey detective gal, who wears a revealing orange wrap on the Frontier. Three gals are murdered, but who is responsible?? It is a crazy non-sequiter murderer in a frontier stockade. Indian predjudice and an ugly Pirate enter into the equation. I sure didn't see this one coming!! The Kit West story was drawn by an artist I was unfamiliar with named Jill Elgin. She drew the comic series, "Girl Commandos" from Harvey Publications during WWII from 1942-1945. Avon Comics has a lot of really cool books in various genres post WWII. Creative, enticing, and engaging!! There are only 26 copies extant on the CGC Census, all of which are Blue-Labels. Los Alamos: “This weapon is to be used against Japan between now and August 10th….It seems to be the most terrible thing ever discovered, but it can be made the most useful.” Diary of President Truman, 25 July 1945. Enola Gay took off from Tinian Island at 02:45 on 6 August. At 08:15 it dropped the worlds first nuclear bomb - “Little Boy” - fueled by Uranium (pretty much all the Uranium the US had), detonated by the relatively unsophisticated “gun-method”. Hiroshima was leveled: 70,000 people were immediately killed and 130,000 wounded; 48,000 of its 76,000 buildings were totally destroyed. Fatalities rose to 200,000 as the after effects took hold. Prior to this the Uranium for Little Boy had been loaded on the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis and delivered to Tinian on 26 July. Three days later, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese. Meanwhile the core of “Fat Man” - a very different device, a Plutonium bomb where the Plutonium isotope was more plentiful, but the detonation through implosion far harder - had been flown to Tinian on a transport aircraft. Bad weather over the primary target of Kokura forced a change of plans and Nagasaki was instead chosen. The resulting devastation was similar. Very different bombs, very similar results. The site of Los Alamos - on a high Mesa above Santa Fe was once an elite boys prep school where a Ranch lifestyle helped the sons of the Eastern rich to “cowboy up”. That it became - in all its extraordinary rural beauty - the accomodation and laboratories for the science that both changed, and to be frank might also end, the world - is quite hard to compute. Arguably it is the most consequential site - in terms of Global history - past and future - in the USA - and for us was an absolutely “must see”. Images include “Little Boy” and “Fat Man”; the Dining Hall of the Ranch School and later the Manhattan Project; statues of Oppenheimer and the organizationally brilliant General Groves; rudimentary calculators that supported the slide rule calculations; “Oppenheimer’s” home in Los Alamos for the duration of the war and an original homestead that predated the school.
