This morning’s post is from musician Nick Shoulder’s @neckshoulders page! “A MOUTHBOW POST: I’m often asked about an instrument you’ve probably seen me play: the musical now, aka mouthbow, and I thought I’d share an unsolicited informational post on an instrument I truly adore and have been playing since literal childhood. The mouthbow is one of humankind’s first instruments, and cave paintings appear to show them being played as long ago as 15,000 years, with bow technology (and presumably musical variations) predating that by tens of thousands of years. The musical bow, as its played in North America, appears not have any single source, but is an amalgamation of indigenous American and African traditions, often set to European melodies, and forged out of the collective experience of colonial expansion, enslavement and civil war. Today marks 7 years of Lonesome City!! My first solo release recorded and released back up in Portland. The time of release was a high point in my years in PDX. This EP brought about so many changes iny life including figuring out that moving to LA was the thing to do. My music projects have changed a lot in those 7 years but this still brings back lots of memories of Portland and Dublin (where most of the songs were written or learned). Some of my fav moments in music are a single touch added to a song/album. Example: The piano added to Nick Drake's tune Pink Moon, it is the only instrument besides acoustic guitar on the whole album [Mr. Scott Plouf has pointed out there are bagpipes on Long Way to the Top, but that is it, so I feel I could alter this from 'single touch' to minimal. I hadn't listened to the whole album in almost a year, and this post was prompted by seeing a documentary on Nick Drake, had a false memory of the whole record in context]. Ever come across a female playing the khartal, morchang or bhapang? Well, In the making, there’s a shining star whose musical approach is both unconventional and deeply rooted in her unwavering love for music. Our recording session with Mamta Sapera and her group was truly rewarding, offering us an intimate glimpse into her aspirations and passions. Mamta’s affinity for music is profound, and her choice of instruments is nothing short of inspiring, challenging stereotypes. She plays the Khartal, Bhapang, and Morchang, traditionally reserved for male musicians in Rajasthan. Her journey began when her curiosity was piqued by the Morchang, hidden away in her mother’s almirah. Despite initial resistance due to societal norms, Mamta’s determination led her to embrace the Morchang as a birthday gift from her father, marking the beginning of her musical odyssey. From the Morchang, she ventured into the Khartal, then the Bhapang, and now she’s mastering the violin. Her motivation to learn these predominantly male-played instruments stems from a desire to break boundaries and challenge conventions. In her own words, she expressed, “Mujhe kuch hatke karna hai” (“I want to do something unique”) in her sweet tone. During our session, Mamta’s group treated us to a captivating folk song, followed by a mesmerizing jugalbandi featuring the Khartal, Dholak, and Bhapang. Their performance was not only catchy but also uplifting. Our motivation to document Mamta Sapera’s journey lies in recognizing her immense potential and her determination to shatter barriers, not only for herself but also for her fellow female musicians and the community at large.
