A multi-award winner, Hammer is considered a “forefather” and pioneering innovator of pop rap (incorporating elements of freestyle music), and is the first hip hop artist to achieve diamond status with his album Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em. After being labeled a sellout, and with the changing landscape of hip hop music, Hammer attempted to appeal to the rise of gangsta rap. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Felton Pilate and James Earley. The album ranked number 1 for 21 weeks on the #Billboard200, due primarily to the success of the single " #UCantTouchThis". The song has been and continues to be used in many movies and television shows to date, and appears on soundtrack/compilation albums as well. Likewise, the album saw longevity on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at number one because it peaked there for 28 weeks. #Hammer, being good friends with #ArsenioHall, was invited to first perform " #CantTouchThis" prior to its release, on #TheArsenioHallShow in late 1989. He also performed "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em", a song that didn't make it on this album, but did appear in his movie by the same name. 34 years ago today… M.C. hammer gave us his classic third major studio album “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘em” on February 12, 1990 through Capitol Records & EMI Records. This album is considered to be one of the bestselling Hip-Hop albums of all time spending 21 weeks on the #Billboard200 at No.1 & is also certified double 💎 selling over 20 milli albums sold world-wide. It would go on to become the first hip-hop album to earn diamond status! Usually it takes a double album for a hip-hop album to accomplish that but this was just one LP. The album was accompanied by a straight-to-video film titled the same as the album. It was heavily promoted during the cross-over promotion of then popular #BritishKnights. I was middle aged 9 year old kid obsessed with the cassette tape I had of this album. I even begged for British Knights. That’s how much influence Hammer had on me, I also rocked with Pepsi at that time because of him too. Proud to own this Clear Vinyl LP repress edition of the album.
