And just like that, Week 4 of the @jewellersacademy silver diploma was over! These are the two new pieces we made last week. Both are wax-carved and both were a joy to make. The top piece is a ring with a cubic zirconia stone set into it and the smaller one is a cabochon setting (like a small cup, or in my case a large cup!) that can be soldered onto a ring band and then a stone is set into it. It can also be made into a pair of gemstone studs with an earpost soldered to the back or a tiny delicate pendant. Wax carving is a lovely technique and one that I'd really love to go back and explore. The whole process is very calming and almost like meditation, especially when you're filing the wax back. It's also a versatile technique as you can make some exciting and bold designs using wax, such as architectural, minimalist rings with or without gemstones. Watch this space... The wax pieces are sent to the casters who make a mould using the lost wax technique and the metal of your choice is then poured into the mould to create the piece. This process means that a design can be replicated as many times as you like and ensures consistency in your designs. So, that's Week 4 done. Now onto Week 5 which is all about collet settings. I've been wanting to learn this for ages, but you'll have to wait to see how I get on. It's been lovely to get back to my little studio this week and just spending some time playing with ideas that I've been itching to try out. In the picture, I've been playing with some new (new for me) macrame knots and attached tiny amethyst beads to one side. This is by no means finished! In all the excitement yesterday of creating and posting my reel of @jewellersacademy silver diploma Term 1 pieces, I forgot to include these!!🤦♀️ So an extra treat for you and an excuse for me to show them off! The first is the spinner ring which was a delight when it was finished but the process pushed me in a nice way. I'm really proud of the completed piece, so much so I'm making another to wear this week. The second piece are the textured domed earrings: one concave, one convex.
