🤔 Whose dreams are they? All parents have dreams for their kids. And, of course, there is nothing wrong with that. The tricky part comes when we let our own dreams for our children drown out the dreams they have for themselves. In my career counseling practice, I heard it countless times: “My parents told me I could I either be a doctor or a lawyer – otherwise they wouldn’t pay for my education.” I’ll never forget “Jenny”, who came to me because she was desperately unhappy practicing law. From the time she was a toddler she knew she was destined to follow in her father’s legal footsteps. During our second session, Jenny fought back tears as she shared several exquisite charcoal drawings – almost breathtaking in detail – that she had kept hidden under her bed since high school. I met Jenny just as my two then - little boys were discovering their love for baseball. If it had not been for Jenny, I can imagine I would have tried to steer my boys toward an activity that I could better appreciate and participate in. Fast forward – Thanks to Jenny, my oldest son is now the Major League Game Advanced Coordinator for the San Diego Padres. And my younger son, after two years as a pitcher in the minor leagues for the St. Louis Cardinals, left baseball to pursue a career in finance. Had it not been for Jenny, I am not sure that I would have encouraged my boys’ passion for baseball. The desire to nurture our children to follow in our footsteps is natural. Before I became a parent, I imagined I would be “perfect”. Then. . . . . I had my two boys – And I discovered it wasn’t possible to be perfect. Parenting was hard -- like, really, really hard! At the end of an exhausting day, all I wanted to be was “good enough”. By not expecting perfection of myself I was able to accept that my boys were not perfect either. Now my boys are wonderful (not perfect) young adults, and I am still a “good enough” mom.
