Festen🇩🇰(1998), el principio de un gran dogma 9.5/10 En esta primera película del icónico movimiento Dogma 95, Thomas Vinterberg se utiliza de los excesos de la burguesía para retratar lo peor que existe en la sociedad. Estos excesos van de la mano con una fotografía extravagante que busca a toda costa el naturalismo en la trama utilizando ángulos jamás asociados al contenido dramático. Igualando a la elocuencia del manifiesto de Dogma 95, La Celebración brilla por mezclar todo lo terrible que puede suceder en una familia: suicidio, violación, pedofília, incesto, racismo, violencia. Pese a que la fotografía de Anthony Dod Mantle puede llegar a agotar por su estética de documental/cámara escondida/vídeos caseros, no deja de ser la herramienta que hace esta historia aún más particular, por ende imaginarla con producción comercial resulta imposible. LOST RIVER. “Lost River” rewards a leap of faith into its director, cast and crew by a huge amount when letting go of any preconceptions, assumptions and attempted connections. First and foremost, this is a Ryan Gosling picture and not one by David Lynch or Nicolas Winding Refn - it is immediately palpable from the first frame that it is a singular vision and it deserves to be treated as such. What follows is a collection of scenes which appear to not make sense logically, there seems to be an emotional thread but it is difficult to unearth. Gosling couldn’t have taken a riskier and more fragile project as his first and to date unfortunately only directorial work because he consciously alienates an “expecting” audience. It is the picture’s greatest strength because this is meant that it’s not a director’s experience but the audience’s. At this point, he Gosling is close to a couple of the directors he worked with because they channel pure cinema. Cinema as a bodily, emotional experience. I for myself would like to retain it as such and whatever questions I might have I take with me and let myself continue wondering and admiring the creative power, bond and fun the making of “Lost River” must have been. But most importantly, I cherish the courage of the filmmakers to go all-in, reject commerciality and fully trust the singular viewer to “just” experience a singular stream of visual and aural beauty. FESTEN (The Celebration). An experience (almost) unlike anything I’ve ever had before. Knowing the Dogme DNA from Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg’s more recent pictures and seeing how it all began and then developed is something special. It seems to me that both of them took the best of what Dogme is and liberated it from the strict manifesto over the years - culminating in (not only visual) masterworks like “Melancholia”, “Jagten” and “Druk”. My feeling though is that without the rigorous rules they’ve set up in 1995 that Dogme would have never become what it is - by making bold, quite arrogant choices against the grain of the “art” of cinema and in favor of (fictional, artificial) “life” on screen. By not filming “Festen” on DigiBeta tapes it would have still been a strong picture but the look and feel undoubtedly is what makes it “special”. Only thereafter these filmmakers could liberate themselves and use “traditional” filmmaking technique to “correct” the roughness but retain the idea and essence behind it. The result is that “Festen” works on many levels yet fails for me to be one of the great masterpieces due to the occasional, yet not always alienating cinematography and the exuberant youthful boldness and arrogance sometimes standing in the way for “more” but these are necessary evils I can easily forgive when just thinking about one $200 million blockbuster. The aim of Dogme was to fortify performances and plot at all costs and it worked phenomenally. The actors are superb - Thomas Bo Larsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Henning Moritzen. The strength in the details of their work often gets lost visually but the unspoken power in their movements conquers that. The “plot” feels as if it is improvised on the set and just “accidentally” captured with a camcorder but is obviously planned out. The script is a mixture of excess and radical economy - cutting away when we “expect” more (therefore constantly surprising us) and staying on scenes that feel as if they don’t belong but in retrospect achieve much greater strength because of what we get to know later in the picture.
