I was introduced to Kalastrot through my classmate, Bhaskar and was impressed by the wide range of affordable art pieces. I commissioned two pieces - One from Dhiren Sasmal in Kolkata and the other from Raj Maji in Mumbai and was kept up to date on the progress with periodic videos and my feedback was always welcomed. In previous years, we have facilitated and welcomed visits from local school children from four inner-city Plymouth primary schools. The educational trip to Mayflower Marina was part of the innovative 'Widening Horizons' programme developed by the Millfields Inspired charity based in Stonehouse in Plymouth. The programme aims to motivate young people living and learning in Britain's Ocean City by giving them an experience and taste for the world of work in order to inform their future career choices. During their visit to Mayflower Marina, the children ventured on board a floating classroom, courtesy of sonar specialists Sonardyne, experienced the sonar equipment in operation and got hands-on experience with the equipment. The educational school trip was rounded off with an enlightening session about caring for your ocean and coastline from award-winning environmental warrior Rikkie Carette of Clean Coast Services. 🪔 The children at our sister nursery, Gwendolen House spent the whole week celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. They made their own versions of the clay lanterns, used outside Indian houses to symbolise the inner, protective light, and explored materials such as clay, paint, paper plates, and whatever they could find to decorate their creations. The activities were adult-led and the children had freedom to decide how they wanted to execute their artwork. By providing the materials and not interrupting, teachers allowed focus, critical thinking, creativity and self-expression. The very first time I walked into The City Library I twirled, smiled & let my whole self be filled with wonder & excitement. I HAVE ALWAYS L❤️VED LIBRARIES! Even when they were cumbersome w/ their daaaark wood tones, chunky furniture & basement-y smells😬. But then, here was this award-winning building of 📚… with🪟W🪟I🪟N🪟D🪟O🪟W🪟S🪟 eeeeveryyywhere! I quickly signed up for a library card, wandered the aisles {smiling at anyone who made 👀 contact with me}, found a 📖 {though I can’t say for sure, it was likely a cookbook - which I often enjoy reading cover-to-cover} and nestled into a spot by one of the fazillion windows! My nook was overlooking a water feature in the courtyard below and a museum that focuses on creativity and innovation. In the almost two decades living in Salt Lake that library courtyard was a hub for many, rallies, festivals, protests, fairs & so much more. The year 5 children from Pilgrim Primary School got to go and visit Cattewater Harbour Commissioners as part of Widening Horizons. the children were welcomed into the office where they learnt about different job roles and had the chance to ask some fantastic questions about the different jobs. The first activity the children looked at exports and where things come from, everything from clay, animal feed and wood chippings which was very interesting. For the second activity the children got to go down on to the harbour and explore two different boats, the pilot and a tug boat this was very exciting. To finish off the day the children went on a boat trip around the sound were they saw the Royal William Yard, Drakes Island and the Dock Yard. the year 5 children even got to see the pilot in action as it pasted us! what an amazing day, a trip we will never forget! A great #ThrowBackThursday to previous visits from local school children from four inner city Plymouth primary schools. The educational trip to Mayflower Marina was part of the innovative 'Widening Horizons' programme developed by the ‘Millfields Inspired’ charity, which is based in Stonehouse in Plymouth. The programme aims to motivate young people living and learning in Britain’s Ocean City by giving them an experience and taste for the world of work, in order to inform their future career choices. During their visit to Mayflower Marina the children ventured on board a floating classroom, courtesy of sonar specialists Sonardyne, experienced the sonar equipment in operation and got hands on experience with equipment. The educational school trip was rounded off with an enlightening session about how to care for your ocean and coastline from award winning ‘environmental warrior’ Rikkie Carette of Clean Coast Services . @cattewatercaptured welcomed the year 5 children from The Cathedral School of St Mary into their 'office' as part of our Widening Horizons Programme. The children had an amazing day exploring the tug and pilot boat. They learnt all about cargo, and exports, and even discovered what goes through are very own Plymouth port! The children got to go on a boat trip around Plymouth Sound where they had the opportunity to be shown how to use a map and find where they are on the map, which they enjoyed. The year 5 children from St George's C of E Primary Academy got the chance to visit #eeplymouth #eevolunteering as part of Widening Horizons, the children had the chance to go behind the scenes, go on a guided tour around the offices and got to speak to some members of staff, explore different parts of the offices to see what they are used for, and enjoyed an amazing breakfast! The children designed their own phones which let the youngsters run wild with their imaginations. What a great day!
