Plural Studio here getting involved! This week we volunteered to help our friends and clients with some hands-on work, insulating the floor of their typical English mid-terrace home. While Anna drew up the wood-fibre insulation specification for the floor, many details of retrofits have to get worked out on site by builders. Dan of @bristolsusbuild, has been so incredibly generous to teach his clients (and us) how to do this part of the process and save some labour costs by getting involved with their own build project. Not only that, he shared his evolved knowledge on how to do this installation, which can be quite tricky when membranes are wont to sag, joists aren’t deep enough, and air flow for suspended floors needs to be maintained! The team engaged closely and collaboratively with planning and conservation officers to establish a sensitive scheme that respects the scale and appearance of the surrounding streets, while preserving the historic ‘gothic’ character of the hall building itself. . A pair of 2-bedroom houses are created in the former hall, while an existing single storey wing to the East of the hall is raised by two additional storeys to accommodate two 3-bedroom houses. . Each of the houses is designed with a a dedicated study for working at home - either at the ground floor overlooking the street, or as north-facing loft rooms with high level clerestory glazing. . The front elevation to the street is calmly ordered, with aligned openings set within pale render in observance of the town’s prevailing Georgian stucco. On the gable facade of the hall, existing elements such as lancet windows are reinterpreted to suit the residential use, integrated within a composition of openings including the ground floor recessed entrance. . The project prioritises retaining as much of the existing high-carbon fabric as possible, both out of a concern for minimising loss of embodied energy on site, and as a pragmatic measure - new spaces are simply organised within and around the position of existing solid brickwork walls, with the occasional additional opening. . New project starting on a previous job we done a year or so back. We insulated this whole house in 100mm #pavatex #woodfibre and placed some 4x2 timbers in behind the insulation to take the new porch structure without causing cold bridges. A chance to break out the old brick trowel for a change. Skinned up the blockwork and prepped the sub floor, concreted the slab and started fitting the timber frames we pre-built in our unit. Once these latest works are complete we will be saving 2,000kg of carbon emissions every year. And that's only with half the planned retrofit complete, mortgaging ourselves to the eyeballs because we know it's right (and nobody likes a cold draughty home). If every uninsulated home in UK (circa 7 million solid wall properties for example), more energy and more carbon could be saved without having to build a single power plant. The most efficient kilowatt hour of energy is the energy not used in the first place. Every home should have government funded retrofitting by suitably qualified designers. The kilowatts and millions of tonnes of carbon saved would eclipse many wind turbines or nuclear power plants and the vast majority of the population would live in healthy, comfortable homes reducing the burden on health care and eliminating fuel poverty. Exciting morning on site today looking at the trial pits for a new build #passivhaus home near Glasgow with @narroassociates This house will be kept warm with a fully prefabricated timber frame by Eden Insulation, insulated using natural blown wood fibre and clad almost fully in zinc with a subtle cor-ten gable at one end.
