Notions of mortality, artistic legacy, and the economics of art practice have influenced the artists’ decision to embark on this personal deaccessioning project. The messy residue of making art can take up considerable physical and psychological space, plus precious environmental resources. Fractionate is made of plaster and hessian moulds, wax figures, fibreglass and resin castings, rubbish bags loaded with fabric and foam, metal rods, wooden offcuts, and plastic fixtures. The cluttered chaos of the exhibition space feels like a replicant toymaker’s workshop gone awry, with pale fragmented body parts scattered amongst crumbling plaster structures. This accretion of materials and equipment in an artist’s practice can become a costly burden to store and manage. How to archive, what to keep, and the thought of leaving this heavy task to someone else after you’re gone, are difficult considerations for any artist. Fractionate takes agency over the inevitable task of deaccessioning objects from an artist’s studio, transforming it into a celebratory act. Hold, 2018, Detail shot, Nail and string installation, 150 cm x 320 cm x 3cm. I love the grid/matrix in this installation. The shadows slightly bounced off the wall in the right lighting. Lots of people missed the fact that the nails weren't at all in the wall. This piece demanded close and slow looking for its truth to be realised. Some words from the show below: 'Residue’ explores that which remains behind after a core is lost. Brisbane based artists Ally McKay and Tess Mehonoshen depict a delicate but prevailing determination to rebuild and plough forward through loss, using material and spatial relationships to convey intimate experiences. Reflecting, it is like the nets I made in 2015 but in a wall based configuration, an extension of that idea somehow. #contemporaryart #installationart #clarenceartsandevents #wreckersartspace #bneartist #bneart #materialpoetics #contemporaryinstallation #australianartist #abstractartist #grid #matrix

Hold, 2018, Detail shot, Nail and string installation, 150 cm x 320 cm x 3cm. This little close up was taken from the Schoolhouse Gallery wall at @Clarence_artsevents in Hobart from my exhibition "Residue" with Tess Mehonoshen. I'm really proud of this work, my aim was to create a configuration that would support a nail, a material that's usually expected to support others. The nail is connected and suspended by the tension in the string. This took me a full day and a half to install, and has been the biggest iteration of the work. This was developed from my 3 month residency at @wreckersartspace. I use nails a lot. They are strong, they can be useless and fragile. They're kind of beautiful metaphors to me, I love em to bits. Weird, I know.. #contemporaryart #installationart #clarenceartsandevents #wreckersartspace #bneartist #bneart #materialpoetics #contemporaryinstallation #australianartist #abstractartist #hammertime

Simone Hine’s theoretical premise for Amateur speaks of two things: one, that we can never truly drop out of serfdom, or the conditions of labour—for our networked environments codify and commodify just about every action—and two, that the networked content-industrial complex has turned even the most clueless of us into performance artistes. Luckily for me, Amateur does not serve this theory through any kind of impenetrable self-serving aura, which invariably begets a sense of decorum. Rather, it is openly laid out in a room sheet written by Hine herself. This is good news, since my barometer for whether I will enjoy a show (or not) is usually whether I am laughing within the first minute of entering a fine art establishment, wreck yard, or anything in between . . . Nan, Julie, Video Ezy, and Pizza Hut are all on speed dial in Ricky Larry’s solo: Happy Days. With two moulded pink window frames, Larry invites the audience into his childhood memories. Replica 90s household objects and products are brought back to life through Larry’s DIY sculptures and installations. Via his personal narratives, he opens space for us to make connections to our own childhoods. Larry sends my nostalgia into overdrive as I take in objects so familiar to my youth in suburban Australia. The pink and green tennis balls, Nintendo Gameboys, hundreds and thousands fairy bread, and melting cornetto all transport me to those happy hours spent after school, killing time—before we knew how precious that time really was. Video is new to his practice. Rage Days shows the artist embodying multiple personas to the tune of Land Down Under. This invigorates his objects, injecting energy and life into otherwise mundane suburban moments. In a laid-back larrikin style, the artist conjures Aussie truisms. Endearing, comforting, and all too familiar, Happy Days was well worth the trip down memory lane. Thoughts from Ally McKay, artist, writer, and educator. wreckersartspace Hey!! Up next is Rae Saheli with her show 12 Gauge! Please join us for the opening on the 10th of June from 6-9pm! Rae Saheli’s work is defined by a process in which she uses a 12-gauge shot gun aimed at various supports to create explosive and gestural 2-dimensional artworks. Of particular interest to Rae is the unique results that occur when she aims her shotgun at a surface, the hundreds of small pellets that constitute a shot gun shell penetrate each surface in a dynamic yet unique way. Rae has been using this technique since 2019 and it represents a synthesis between her passion for the sport of shooting and the power of art to be at once dynamic and beautiful. Rae hopes to inspire the viewer to reflect on the processes involved in making artwork and the impact of that on the finished work.
