Varun Puri, MD, MSCI, a thoracic surgeon noted for his expertise in minimally invasive approaches to lung cancer treatment, has been named chief of the Section of Thoracic Surgery within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Puri's new role begins on May 1, 2024. He succeeds Bryan Meyers, MD, MPH, who served as section chief from 2008 until this year. Meyers, who led the section through significant growth and the adoption of robotic surgical techniques, will remain on the faculty following this transition. She was inspired to share her story and experiences as a kiddo with distal spinal muscular atrophy - a rare genetic condition that primarily affects a person's ability to use their hands and feet, along with their lower arms and legs. Kaitlin is often educating her classmates on her conditions and differences, and even gave the fourth grade class a presentation about her surgery when she returned to school. The modifications she may require, never stop her from enjoying her passions. She loves to make friendship bracelets, ride her bike and play with her puppies. Meet Emmy Sun, one of our 2023 #DDGFs: Emmy is a doctoral student in the Department of East Asian and Comparative Literatures, with a current research interest in memories and nostalgia in contemporary Chinese media, performance, and materialculture. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Fudan University, and a master’s. degree in East Asian Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. From her senior thesis on “hysterical women” in Republican Shanghai (1930s-1940s) to her master’s thesis on disco-dancing grannies in China’s early-reform era (1980s-1990s), her research projects aim to bring previously marginalized figures to the center of the academic discourse. With a passion for education, she volunteered as a docent at Shanghai Museum and has served as the TA for four undergraduate courses on Chinese language and culture. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis are seeking participants for a research study to understand how nutritional supplements impact immune cell function in relation to aging an overall health. Participants must: • Be 18 to 30 years of age or 60 or older • Not have an autoimmune disorder • Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 30 • Not currently smoke There are 3 study visits. There will be blood draws, urine collection and various assessments. Participants must be agreeable to taking pills twice per day. $50.00 per visit is provided.
