I’ve never shot shibari at less than 70mm (My favourite has usually been 135mm) so being scrunched in at 50mm or less feels very strange. It also changes the look of the work a lot, but I can’t say I’m totally opposed either. I snuck in a quick stop while in Sherwood Park to the Broadview Recycle Station and specifically Hodge Podge Lodge. One of my all time favorite places!! I was on my way to Strathcona County Library for the Edmonton Poetry Festival Event: the Sherwood Park Celebration of Poetry. My little side tangent was amazing!! I found so many medical pill bottles! It was like Christmas! For those of you who don’t know, I LOVE using recycled, reused, and repurposed materials in my artwork. I have already made one 12 foot tall hanging sculpture with over 350 pill bottles. As my mom always says, things tend to come in threes. Now I’m envisioning three of these sculptures… So I probably picked up another 100 pill bottles at the Hodge Podge Lodge. Yes, this gets me excited! I know, I know, friends: you asked me if I was still collecting pill bottles and I said no, but I’ve been putting my own pill bottles aside (see, my depression is contributing to my art!), and so YES, please do save your pill bottles again for my next hanging sculptures. Thank you, thank you, thank you! For confidentiality, you can rip off the label, however do leave some paper residue as I love the fact that these are used bottles, not new. OR, you can use a black sharpie and cover over your personal information. Jannie Edwards writes from her chosen city of Edmonton amiskwacîwâskahikan (ᐊᒥᐢᑿᒌᐚᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ). An Emeritus of MacEwan University, she has published three collections of poetry and has collaborated on many multidisciplinary artistic projects and literary mentorships. Most recently, Learning Their Names: Letters from the Home Place (Collusion Books, 2022), a decade-long “slow art” collaboration with visual artist Sydney Lancaster, explores their connection with a beloved five-acre homestead near the historic Victoria Trail in northeastern Alberta. During a year of the pandemic, Sydney and Jannie exchanged poetic letters across the country (Jannie in Edmonton, Sydney in Nova Scotia) that deepened their thinking about history, stewardship, responsibility and the aliveness of every living thing. It’s hard to admit it’s day 8 of 8 at the 2024 Edmonton Poetry Festival! Mixed emotions bubble up. First, gratitude for the outpouring of words from SO MANY AMAZING LOCAL AUTHORS AND PRESENTERS—WOW! The inspiration meter is pointing at high, so high. And then the staff and volunteers—more gratitude abounds to you all for your generosity of spirit and willingness to step up and say YES, however I can help, count me in! THANK YOU! So gratitude, inspiration, and next: community. Bringing together folks from every walk of life united in the shared love of the written and spoken word… It was described by one attendee that it felt like “coming home” and that was the perfect description! Gratitude. Inspiration. Community. But!! Also longing for more. Are you with us? When something is so nourishing to mind and soul, it’s like the parched person’s first drink of water. We are sad that it has to end, but can be comforted in the fact that there are so many people and organizations that carry the flame year round. CURATORIAL STATEMENT//Josh Languedoc: Movement is a curious thing. The idea of a body, person, or item travelling from one space to another. And what happens in between? As someone or something travels from one point to another, there is an infinite number of possibilities that could happen within that journey. For this cabaret, we are exploring this idea. For the Transports version of Connections//Collisions, you will see bodies in motion. Objects and people being shifted from one space to another. A series of moments that happen in between. And you may even see an exploration of sound and movement connected to public transit! Marilyn Dumont teaches for the faculties of Arts and Native Studies at the University of Alberta and is proud of Metis family lines from her Mother’s – Vaness / Dufresne families and her father’s – Boudreau/Dumont families. Her four collections of poetry have won provincial or national awards: A Really Good Brown Girl (1996); green girl dreams Mountains (2001); that tongued belonging (2007); The Pemmican Eaters (2015). A fifth collection surrounding Indigenous history of Edmonton, called South Side of a Kinless River will be published by Brick Books in 2024. Emily Riddle (Okimâw Pipikwan Iskwêw) is Nehiyaw and a member of the Alexander First Nation (Kipohtakaw). She is a writer, textile artist, and policy iskwew based in Amisko Waciw Wâskahikan (Edmonton, Canada). In 2022, she released her first full length poetry collection, The Big Melt which won the Griffin Poetry Prize Canadian first book award.
