When I was 28 and just completing my undergraduate degree and student teaching at a middle school in Norman, Oklahoma, I received the best news. After four years as a stay-at-home mom with my son, after nine years of going to college part-time, I was graduating with a 4.03 GPA, and I was offered a full-time position as an 8th grade English teacher. And . . . I was pregnant with my daughter. It felt so unfair for a young wife and mother ready to have an independent identity, but my wise and beautiful mother (who had to return to military service four weeks after giving birth) encouraged me to turn down the job and be home with my children— for just a little while longer. One more year turned into six with an overseas military assignment, and it did not come without sacrifice, but how fortunate I now feel for ten years of memories with the two greatest loves of my life. And how fortunate for the twelve that followed as a working, single mom, with just the three of us navigating so much of the world together along with the guidance of my own mother and the support of the many women in my circle. Today we celebrate motherhood and all of the strength, courage, sacrifice, and determination we offer and receive. It’s all a gift. ❤️ Happy Mother’s Day. Dear Mama, lately I’ve been feeling you walking next to me. It’s been a while since I talked to you. I haven’t been able to feel you for a long time. Maybe I just haven’t been willing to feel you. Maybe you never left me, but I think I had to leave you. It was hard for me to learn to live with your choices. I had to create my own life, my own story, because mine was beginning to resemble yours too much and I know you don’t want that mama. Today many many moons ago, is the day you chose to end your life and leave us. I was just a little girl then, I was 12. My son turns 12 in one month mama. Your grandson. He’s the best. He is funny, bubbly, creative and great at math just like you mama. And his art is just as magical as yours. If I live another year he will have had me longer than I had you. I think about that a lot. I can’t imagine ever leaving him. He is the light of my life mama. His heart is full of hope and he believes in the goodness of humans. Just like I do mama. It is your kindness that was the founding seed that made mine and his faith in humanity possible. You did that mom. Your light, sensitivity, empathy and warmth was and is unlike any other persons I’ve ever met. I always knew that I chose you mama. Even if you felt like you had to leave this planet, me and Mio will continue believing and loving, thanks to the love you showed me. Honestly, I don’t know why you had to go, only you know that. But I know that it must have been really scary for you. You must have felt so alone. I know that your life was hard mama. I’m sorry you had to go through that. I tried my hardest to save you. I cried and prayed every night. I made a million pacts with god so he would make you well and make us be a family again. But he and you had other plans. I couldn’t save you mama, but I got really good at saving others and ultimately I saved myself. Or maybe you and God did that mama? I know that you might have thought that you were a burden to us when you were sick. But you weren’t, you were and are a blessing that I will cherish forever. Thank you for loving me.
