Zoltergeist the Poltergeist Douglas Hackle 3/5 Stars When Jimmy is sent off to the Penance House to make amends for his egregious sin, he finds himself embroiled in a world of boredom, fear, and getting to meet his favorite tv star since he was a kid. I honestly don't know what to say about this one. It was unique, bizarre, and had me arching my eyebrow in weirdness overload for pretty much the whole book. It's almost like a fever dream or maybe what I imagine being really, unpleasantly high would be like. Hackle’s absurdist, bizarro, irreverent, and obscene Zoltergeist the Poltergeist works best when it’s lazing about, letting the two main characters take over, focusing more on the lunacy of the setting rather than on any actual storyline. Though there’s only a small semblance of a plot, our author is able to coerce his imaginative imagery into a funny novel—one that knows it’s spending time building up its nonsensical world. Zoltergeist isn’t going to be for everyone. Probably not even for most people. Towards the last few chapters, even I was a bit off-put.
