Wishing our old man, Alice Cooper, a Happy Sweet 16 (with a Peanut photobomb)! Cooper is our last Nigerian Dwarf goat from the “rockstar herd,” but he keeps up with the younger kids just fine. Having a senior dog brings so much joy, and a lot of changes. 🤍 Besides keeping up on vet visits and vaccinations, it’s important to watch for little changes. Here are some common symptoms in an aging dog: ▪️If your dog no longer wants to exercise or seems lethargic. It could just be natural aging, but it could be something serious. ▪️Persistent diarrhea or vomiting. ▪️A wound that will not heal. ▪️Unusual disorientation. ▪️Smelly breath - especially a metal smell. ▪️Weight gain or weight loss. ▪️Can no longer control urination A dog becomes a senior between the age of 7 and 9. It is a good idea to start seeing your vet twice a year at that point. This isn’t a happy topic but it’s an important one. Little dogs live longer than big puppers, so it only makes sense that organs have issues as they age - just like humans. Nacho was diagnosed five years ago this May, and was put on a medicine called Vetmedin. Like all medical conditions, the earlier it is caught, the better. It is basically a heart murmur, that is found by your vet listening very closely with a stethoscope. There is a number scale for severity of the diagnosis. The first year, Nacho was a 3, and now he’s been a high 3, low 4 for the past 4 years, so we feel very blessed! 🩵 When your dog turns 8-9 years old, they officially become a “senior” At that time, it is very important to go from one to two annual check-ups per year, and make sure your vet is really giving your dog’s heart (especially small breeds) a good, long listen. Eventually, Nacho will become a 5, then a 6, and will more than likely pass from Congestive Heart Failure. (CHF) It is inevitable. 😔 But in the mean time, as most of you know, he’s doing great, and is spoiled rotten! Max Update: Still not a Louie fan. Max loves structure, an unchanging environment, and quiet. One of our friends call him the “Library Cat” as he enjoys quiet and calm. Unfortunately Louie likes to move really quickly at times, which I think isn’t helpful for Max’s vision that is not 100 percent anymore (or his nerves). So Max continues to keep the end bedroom as his sanctuary and just comes out for food and bathroom times, or to request some human snuggle time in his space. I’m still hopeful he might get more brave over time, but continuing to respect his need for his own safe space and keeping Louie from impeding on it.
