Pour son exposition "Un reflet derrière une chimère" à la @193gallery , @valentina.canseco a fait dialoguer des peintures aux formes organiques dansant dans l'espace, des verres soufflés rappelant les statues ancestrales de Venus, et des sculptures en vitrail animant l'espace de leurs lumières colorées. Je suis heureuse de l'avoir accompagné @valentina.canseco dans sa découverte du verre, les choix techniques des vitraux et leur réalisation. Par leur format monumental sorti d'un cadre, la taille des pièces de verre et le système d'accrochage, l'artiste m'a lancé un véritable défit ! Je suis fière d'avoir pu y répondre afin de matérialiser ses dessins en verre et contribuer à la réalisation des quatre sculptures de l'exposition. J'ai particulièrement apprécié cette expérience de commande, mais aussi de conseil et d'échange avec une artiste. C'etait appréhender un autre univers, s'imprégner de couleurs, de formes, des compositions et se dépasser techniquement. Avec @valentina.canseco se fût une valse colorée. Ekene Stanley Emecheta, A Gift Of A Lifetime à la @193Gallery dans le cadre de Traversées africaines 2024. 💡Focus institution partenaire Né en 1994, Ekene Stanley Emecheta est un artiste nigérian autodidacte. Il vit et travaille à Londres et au Nigeria. L’artiste a eu l’occasion de faire une formation d’art en Chine pendant cinq mois. Les œuvres d’Ekene sont principalement figuratives, réalisées à l’huile et à l’acrylique sur toile. Ses récentes réalisations se concentrent davantage sur l’énergie humaine, la personnalité et l’identité. @enfant_precoce Citoyen du monde Portrait de l'artiste @malam_artiste en citoyen du monde, guérillero de la paix. L'homme est habillé d'un treillis militaire à grosses fleurs pop. A la cartouchière fait écho un collier de kauri, ces coquillages monnaie d'échange en temps de paix. Au dessus des herbes bleues, fleurissent des anémones tout droit empruntées à Wahrol ou à une génération hippie qui prônait la paix. Le drapeau tenu par l'artiste porte haut les couleurs d'un citoyen du monde, guerrier de la paix. Cependant, loin des utopies post 68, le guerrier de la paix est encore en treillis, patauge dans les herbes du maquis, preuve s'il en est que la cause exige toujours un combat. Cette pièce de l'exposition m'a paru magistrale dans son propos et plastiquement particulièrement aboutie. Le dessin du personnage est réduit à une ligne claire, extrêmement ferme, le contraste avec les fleurs wahroliennes juste esquissées introduit un champ poétique mêlant les parfums d'une révolution à l'herbe bleue surgie d'un imaginaire fécond . La pièce est à ne pas manquer au rez de chaussée, au fond du couloir dans une petite salle qui présente également une sculpture de @malam_artiste , le plasticien représenté sur cette toile. The fluid, smooth forms she developed drawing inspiration from dance, change scale: two blown glass sculptures are suspended, three sculptures of 1m70 are exhibited, and another - monumental - unfolds under the glass roof. They impose contemplation and rhythm on the journey. Paintings in diptychs and triptychs respond by decomposing light into an extended range: dark tones measure up to bright flashes. Artist: Thandiwe Muriu (Kenya, 1990). “Call me please”, Jet Ink Print of FineArt RAG+ Matt 310g mounted on aluminium dibond, 2022, edition #1/7, plus 2 AP. 90 x 60 cm. “He who loves, loves you with your dirt.” African Proverb As a female artist operating in a previously male-dominated field, Muriu is passionate about celebrating and empowering her fellow women. In her work, she not only explores who she is as an artist, but also as a black woman. In her CAMO series, Thandiwe showcases Africa’s unique mix of vibrant cultures, textiles, and beauty norms. The historical Ankara wax textile defines Thandiwe’s work. At the forefront of her practice is the use of textiles that create surreal illusions - not digitally manipulated - which make her subjects disappear and serve as a canvas for reflection on the question of identity and its evolution over time. Designing the garments and eyewear worn by her subjects, Thandiwe collaborates with local tailors and artisans to bring those custom designs to life. Pairing each work with an African proverb, Thandiwe expresses the collective wisdom of generations recorded through oral history even as she communicates culture in a new and visual form. The accessories in Thandiwe’s work are inspired by the objects Kenyans interact within their daily life, where one object can have multiple uses beyond its original purpose. The artist explains that this creative recycling is commonplace for a population often lacking in means. Memories of using a rotary dial phone in her grandmother’s home inspired Call Me Please. ART SERIES #005. It’s interesting how art enables to actually look and not just see. We see things everyday, a myriad of things every minute, but do we really look at them? In his solo show at @193gallery, @enfant_precoce invites us to look more closely, stop and reflect on what is going on around us. He portrays some everyday scenes and the lives of a few people who came from abroad to live and work in the « promised land ». It’s also interesting how art can speak. When I look at those paintings, I can actually hear the bittersweetness, frustration and disenchantment of those people when they arrive here. So much for the country of enlightenment, democratic values and social inclusion.
