In the absence of imagery or narrative, the works are left open to interpretation, as an almost blank plane to reflect one’s own emotions and ideas. Using an objective palette tied to the Scottish landscape, color acts as a vehicle to reveal the picture planes underlying points of reference; with the works being grounded in the everyday, the viewer is encouraged to readdress notions of their surroundings, where the familiar is made full of possibility. 📌 Closing July 27, 2024: Margo Sawyer, Synchronicity Margo Sawyer’s artistic practice investigates the relationship between space and transcendence; the places where architecture and ritual converge to encourage a state of contemplation within the viewer. The central actor in Sawyer’s work is color. With an array of complex and unexpected unions of color and optical play, she explores how transparency, reflectivity, luminosity, physicality, materiality, perception have a psychological effect of color as a window into our spiritual world. Introducing "Got this" - My latest piece that holds a deep personal significance and a fascinating story of nature’s wonders. Did you know that some creatures in the wild, like the cardinal in my artwork, can be both male and female? Yes, it’s true! They are known as bilateral gynandromorphs—a rare genetic phenomenon where an animal exhibits both male and female characteristics. This cardinal, split down the middle with each side showing traits of a different gender, is not just a biological marvel; it represents the complexities and dualities we face every day. For me, it echoes the challenges God puts in our paths—reminding me, especially when times get tough, that I've "Got this." It’s a testament to the belief that everything we face is part of a bigger plan, and with faith, we can handle it. As an artist and a person of faith, I find the natural world constantly teaching us lessons about diversity, acceptance, and the beauty of existing as we are, without human intervention. This artwork is my way of navigating through my thoughts about gender, identity, and existence, urging us to think beyond our conventional understanding. The result comes out like “Lost Dog” created from 100 pound puppy dog tags. (47 1/2 x 39 1/2 x 3 inches) these id tags identified the owner and the dogs name, this highly loved and cherished object became discarded, and presented like a chain of heartbreak. Public Art Tuesday - Spirit of Flight by Charles Julius Umlauf This work is a group of sculptures, principally a bronze statue of a man with his arms raised up with wings behind him. His head is tilted towards the sky symbolizing his victory over flight. The man has been placed on a pedestal surrounded by a pool that has six clusters of three birds that seem to be flying below him. Pound puppies were a phenomenon and one of the first collectible stuffed animals that elicited a bond with their owners through name tags and adoption papers. Brent Birnbaum found them strewn across sites like eBay and started digging through their history - eventually collecting into the hundreds (187!) to create this sculpture. Limited by its own weight and form the towering stack starts to take on a new visual with their strange tails turning into a spiked wall, while on the interior a wishing well format starts to grow. From @caddallas member @valleyhousegallery ✨ Currently on view through April 27th, 2024 - Paintings, Henry Finkelstein Henry Finkelstein’s solo exhibition at Valley House Gallery includes plein-air paintings he did in France over the last two years; first in the town of Sainte-Alvère in the Périgord, and more recently in Northern Brittany near Pommerit-le-Vicomte. Henry Finkelstein earned his MFA in painting from Yale University School of Art in 1983, followed by a Fulbright Grant to study in Italy. A residency at Rochefort-en-Terre in Brittany, France, in 1992, and again in 2000, introduced him to this region where he returns each summer to paint from direct observation. In 1994, he was elected a National Academician. Finkelstein has taught painting and drawing in New York City since 1996. This show just makes you happy and who knew these clunky forms could create such elegance. Brent Birnbaum is limited only by his materials as he tries to keep them intact and their relationship to the viewer. This duality of narratives is really interesting to experience as a viewer. There is the initial reaction of your inner child being awakened while at the same time you look at the formal structure and its sculptural quality.
