Lot highlight: Lot 8 Ayako Rokkaku AR-06-39, 2006 Mixed media on cardboard 21 3/10 × 15 3/5 in | 54 × 39.5 cm Ayako Rokkaku’s exuberant paintings, which feature cartoonish characters adrift in rainbow-tinged fields, have won her fans across the globe. The self-taught Japanese artist usually paints with her bare hands, giving her Superflat-esque figures and color schemes a rougher edge. Her chosen surfaces range from canvases to pieces of cardboard and vintage Louis Vuitton suitcases. Rokkaku began painting in 2002 and her big break arrived in 2006, when she was awarded the prestigious Akio Goto Prize at Kaikai Kiki’s Geisai art fair. Since then, she has exhibited at galleries in Paris, Tokyo, and Amsterdam, and in 2015, she participated in the Swatch Art Pavilion’s Open Studio at the Venice Biennale. Her work regularly fetches six-figure prices on the secondary market. Rokkaku’s raucous compositions reflect her love for the unbounded freedom and energy of childhood. [Today 2oz] 2024.04.27 "ALL RIGHT BITE" IN Gallery Target by AYAKO ROKKAKU 화려한 컬러의 핸드페인팅으로 유명한 아야코 록카쿠의 전시. 오모테산도 놀러갔다가 우연히 마지막날 방문. 색감은 언제나 예쁘고, 추상적인 형태는 나에겐 아직 쉽지 않았고, 조형 작품은 의외로 페인팅과 괴리감이 없어서 좋았다. 그리움이 이 시대의 가장 큰 산업이라는 인상적인 멘트에 이끌려 보게된 ‘포에버리즘- 우리를 세상 끝으로‘ 평소처럼 입구에 적혀있는 전시에 관한 글(설명이라고 해야하나)을 읽고 전시를 보려는데, 요즘 이해력이 많이 떨어진건지 저 글을 한번에 이해하지 못해 입구에서만 한참을 서있었다..... 솔직히 말하면 내 마음을 자극하는 포인트가 없어서 였던걸까, 작가의 의도,작품의 뜻을 제대로 이해하고 싶어 전시를 보는 내내 브로셔를 뒤지고,작품을 보고 또 보느라 관람 시간이 생각보다 길어졌다. 생각을 많이 하게 해준 전시. ( 그 와중에 떠오른 단어 중 하나 _ 불완전... ) #빅토르바자렐리 운좋게 도슨트 해설을 들으며 감상했다. 도형과 색감을 반복적으로 사용해 이런 작품을 만든다고..? 작가의 정교함과 면밀함은 보는 내내 짜릿함을 느끼게 해주었다. 거기다 알고리즘과 순열이라니..( 내가 이과생이라 그런가 )빅토르 바자렐리 전시는 너무도 만족스러웠음 #아야코록카쿠 몽글 몽글 , 동화속에 들어와 있는듯한 느낌 따뜻한 그림과 작가의 말을 통해 심리(?) 치료 하고 나온것 같은 기분. 시작은 종이박스 였다는것, 모든 그림은 도구 없이 손으로 직접 그렸다는 것 _ 누구나 할 수 있다는 것💗 머리가 딱딱하게 굳어버리지 않도록 창의적인 생각을 하고, 이를 다양하게 표현하는 방법을 찾기 ✨ 다음번엔 뭘보러 갈까 _ 사실 다 정해둠 (파워J)

Ayako Rokkaku ロッカクアヤコ (*1982) is a self-taught Japanese artist living in Europe. She paints with her fingers, on cardboard or canvas, her playful and spontaneous approach creating large tableaux evoking a childlike dreamworld. Now on view in Venice: Ayako Rokkaku’s (@rokkakuayako) exhibition DETOUR FOR AN ICE CREAM FAIRY, which takes places parallel to the events of the 60th Venice Biennale. The invitation to participate in parallel to the 60th iteration of the Venice Biennale prompted Rokkaku to imagine new materials, formats, and processes in order to create a body of works directly inspired by the history and traditions of Venice. The heritage of Venetian glass, and the spectacular “colorito” of the painting celebrated in the city during the Renaissance, became the new source materials for Rokkaku. First came the glass sculptures, which Rokkaku developed in close collaboration with one of the master glass blowers at Berengo Studio. Using initial drawings as models to guide the design of the glass pieces, the resulting sculptures became the product of intensive collaboration. The artist’s trademark innocence and playfulness are maintained through the inclusion of eyes reminiscent of the characters that emerge behind acrylic swirls of paint in her canvases. In one of the Murano sculptures, tiny bunnies populate the object’s base, building a whimsical setting, typical of much of the artist’s imaginary worlds. In another, a raspberry-colored mass sits atop a snow-white figure, the crown a perfect fit for one of Rokkaku’s fairies. The liquidity of the hat is reminiscent both of the movement of glass blowing and folding and the gravitational pull of slowly melting gelato. All of the glass works created at Berengo Studio have this quality of sweetness, accentuating the smoothness of glass through allusions to ice cream and childlike fantasy. Ayako Rokkaku @rokkakuayako is holding a solo exhibition in Tokyo after 7 years since "OBSCURA." As an ardent fan of hers, attending the exhibition filled with her new works is a duty for ROKKAKU lovers. Waking up at 5 am, catching the 7:35 am flight, arriving at Narita Airport by 9:35 am. Taking the NEX train to Shibuya, reaching "Gallery Target" around 12:30 pm with slow steps. To catch the return flight at 7:20 pm, one must take the NEX back to Narita Airport at 3:44 pm To do so, one needs to head to Shibuya Station from 3 pm onwards... In the end, there's only a mere two hours available... But still, it's alright! "だけど、愛してる" The title of the solo exhibition is "All Right Bite" Simply put, it means 'digesting what you consume.' It seems like the artist expressed the process of understanding the world, digesting experiences, and creating through their artwork with a straightforward combination of words.
