I think we can all agree yesterday was WILD! Our team stayed extra busy with 3 members volunteering as medical standby at Chico Air Museum FlyIn, 4 members participating in the Marine Boat Ops Training on the Sacramento River, 6 members ran the Little Loco Relay above Forest Ranch and lastly, we had a callout in the evening. All of this was done in the extreme weather Butte County experienced yesterday. One of the responding volunteers describes the callout below: "It was a good day yesterday, as CalFire and BCSAR swiftwater rescue teams was able to assist a fisherman that encountered an “unexpected swim” when his boating trip on the Feather River went bad. After his small boat capsized on the Feather River, he made it to shore on his own power and was able to call 911 – but was several miles away from civilization and his vehicle. At the time of his swim, the water temperature was under 60 degrees, and air temperature was in the 50’s – so hypothermia was a real concern. Crews located the victim, put on a PFD, wrapped in blankets and quickly transported in our team’s SJX Jet Boats Inc. back to the waiting EMS units to be checked out. Sure, that boat was expensive when our all volunteer team purchased it – but you cannot put a price tag on being able to respond quickly across shallow water to reach and transport victims." #BCSAR #buttecountyca #bepreparedhavefun #workhardplayhard

He's 9 years old and loves going out on rescues and enjoys the countless hours of training. He is a validated search dog. 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 Griffin (short: Griff) 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳? Griffin is a Sable German Sheppard, sable is his colour (black & tan). 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝗽? His first 8 months, he was with the police dog service, but after 8 months, Griff was removed from the police program for not being aggressive enough. (Sweet Griff!) Greg, Griff's current handler and SAR member, got Griff after those 8 months. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿? Griff is currently 9 years old and has been a member for 8 years already! 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗲? ANYTHING! But most of all, he likes to climb and go out on the steep trails. And rockslides are always fun for him! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗔𝗥? Flying and going on boats. Yes, dogs fly too! Griff has been both on helicopters and planes with SAR! Griff knows his job and loves to work. He's the definition of a working dog. One thing that Griff enjoyed, but wasn't really good at: being a spotter on a plane. But who can blame him? It's hard to spot someone when you can't use your nose from up high! Last week MSAR had a scenario training night. Members were assigned to teams and given a mock call out of a subject that had fallen from a waterfall. Every year the team responds to calls involving one of our local waterfalls. Frequent training equips our members to respond effectively and efficiently. BCSAR is proud to partner with Element 84 by providing drone footage of mock victims to assist with their machine learning program. Typically when we have a drone search, we have to have a person manually review all the footage and look for our missing person. With advances in AI, Element 84 was able to leverage machine learning so the AI can spot the missing person for us! It's faster, effective and less human error. We are so excited to be on the forefront of this new technology and look forward to using it in the field. After graduating in Cranbrook, I got a job with BC Tel and moved away for 30 years. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿? Well, this year is my 30th year! I believe it was in June that I joined (wink wink nudge nudge) 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗔𝗥? Search Manager, Organized Avalanche Response Team Leader & Instructor, Rope Rescue Team Leader Instructor, GSAR course instructor, GSAR Team Leader, Mountain Rescue Level 1, and I'm the Training Officer for Cranbrook SAR. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? I'm retired from TELUS (BC Tel) where I had many jobs. I still have my own business where I specialize in Avalanche Safety courses and Snowmobile courses, but I also still work for Overland Canada as an Off-Road Driving Instructor and as an Off-Road Guide. 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗲? There are two local hikes that I really enjoy in wintertime for snowshoeing, those are Mount Baker and Cranbrook Mountain. Most of the hikes that I have done in summertime I enjoyed, and there is none that I wouldn't do again. Fisher Peak was good, and so was Teepee Mountain. In my experience Teepee was slightly harder than Fisher, as soon as you start climbing, it's relentless. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗔𝗥? To me it was something that I always found interesting, so when I got the opportunity to join at Maple Ridge (currently: Meadow Ridge), I did. It allows me to give back to the community 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝟯 𝗔𝗠? The big passion is 4x4 overlanding! I'm always up for a 4x4 adventure. [Story continues in the comments]
Double the people in trouble, double the callouts today for our volunteers! Our first callout was for a missing 4x4 up near Philbrook Lake. He was successfully found by our helo team and helped out of the snow by our motorized units. Our second callout was an exhausted hiker on Table Mountain that happened just as our helo was flying by - long story short, the fastest and easiest way to get them out was by air. What a fabulous day to be a Butte County Volunteer! Our teams train tirelessly and continuously to stay ready for callouts such as these. It was a chilly, windy, rainy day yesterday while we ran our Mock Search Scenario at Lime Saddle Marina. Our scenario consisted of 2 subjects who went hiking the night before and never returned home. They separated and one was found well while the other had an ankle injury and hypothermia which required extraction. We had our K9s, mantrackers, Ranger UTVs and our command trailer out in the weather making this search a resounding SUCCESS! Our monthly OTE (over-the-edge) training Tuesday night had some epic views and valuable high-angle training. Using our Arizona vortex (the tripod) and some new gear, we solved a difficult victim access problem and got to get some good reps in! Winter Survival Skills: British Columbia March 2014 One of the most important skills we discuss and practice in the field is shelter building. Depending on your location there may ba an abundance, or limited options. A tarp is always a solid part of your “essentials” as it can be used to make an improvised shelter or bivy relatively quickly. If you have more time, and the right type of snow conditions you may opt for a Quinzee. At the end of our course in BC we decided to test the strength of our snow shelter. Safe to say it can hold a little bit of weight….just make sure you ventilate it adequately! If you’d like to explore this type of training for your group, reach out to us. Who’s a good girl? Spinner passed her Mission Ready Trailing recertification test on Friday in Cool California. This was Spinner’s 6th and final trailing test. The certification is good for 2 years, so at the age of 11 ½ this was her last one before she retires. “Finding the lost is a game to the dogs” said Noelle Francis Spinner’s handler. “They have so much fun and they love doing it because once they have located the lost person, they get to play and get a real yummy snack.” The life of a search dog can be glamourous. Spinner has traveled in the cabin of commercial airplanes when attending trainings outside of California and inside and under helicopters for searches. It can also be physically hard. Spinner has had many vet visits for injuries related to training and searches. Through it all it’s been a grand adventure. Who’s a good girl…. It’s with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Chase, a much-loved COSAR K9 team member who was killed in a tragic accident Thursday night after our team training. Chase, along with his handler, Terry Downs, joined COSAR 5-years ago as the team’s first certified search and rescue K9 member. Chase played an important role in dozens of searches in the Okanagan and around the province. Upon receiving his certification, one of the first searches that Chase was involved in resulted in him finding a missing hypothermic elderly subject, helping prevent a tragic outcome. Over his time with the team, Chase was responsible for numerous other successful finds. As well as thousands of hours of training and involvement in searches, Chase was heavily involved in representing COSAR at community events and school presentations. His time representing the team in the community has made Chase the most recognized and beloved face of COSAR. Chase had an immense presence within the team. Not only did he bring an important skill set to the team on searches he was always there with a wagging tail bringing smiles and comfort to teammates when times were tough. Chase received his initial validation as a search and rescue dog in 2021. Since that time, he re-certified 4 more times through the challenging RCMP validation program. As COSAR’s first certified K9 member, Chase is not only responsible for laying the foundation for the team’s K9 program, he has also set a very high bar for all other candidates to reach, including his brother Barrett who will carry the torch forward. Chase’s legacy within the team will carry on and his loss always felt. On behalf of the team, our hearts go out to Terry and Barrett for their loss which came much too soon. Thank you Chase for all that you brought to the team and the community. You will be missed but not forgotten. Rest easy, your watch is over. #bcsar #searchandrescue
One of the more dangerous times to be called out for our Search and Rescue team is night time, however, this is when we get MOST of our calls! Combine that with the river and you get a hazardous situation. Because of this, we endeavor to train in the conditions we may be called out. Night time Boat Operations training went well this weekend - our skilled boat operators practiced night navigation, rescue off snags and strainers and general night time boat safety. This afternoon we received a callout for an injured hiker above the Brad Freeman Trail in Oroville. Our all-volunteer team along with Butte County Sheriff, Calfire, Oroville Fire Department and ButteCountyEMS were able to respond quickly and efficiently to aid the injured person. The ground was rockier than it looked and steep! We were able to extricate utilizing a UTV and were able to get down quickly! Cranbrook SAR was tasked this afternoon alongside @kimberley_sar to rescue an injured snowmobiler at Lumberton. The snowmobiler was caught in an avalanche and was transported to the hospital by helicopter for further treatment. We sure had a busy weekend! We started off Saturday morning with a modified air ops training that focused on a mock injured snowmobiler due to poor flying condition for the helicopter. The Helo techs were able to practice their medical skills and extrication techniques. This was followed by a mantracking training that rainy afternoon. Our evening wrapped up with a callout above Philbrook Lake for a lost/stuck vehicle. On Sunday we took advantage of the break in the weather to get some over-the-edge training at the Chico Fire Tower. If this sounds like the perfect weekend to you, come check us out! Cranbrook SAR was tasked alongside @kimberley_sar this afternoon to rescue and transport a injured skier at South Star Recreation Area this afternoon. After initial treatment, the skier was transported to the parking lot using Kimberley SAR snowmobiles and handed over to the BCEHS ambulance. The skier was then transported to the hospital for further treatment. It started two years ago when you brought home the really big puppy with the humungous paws intending to work a dog for Search and Rescue. The hours of training and the miles and miles driven to get sign-offs and be mentored added up. The falling down (literally and figuratively) and getting back up happened. The mud…everywhere..in your hair…your face…your car…your teeth. You took two steps forward, and the three steps back never came. You anticipated your next steps and had him ready. A tremendous amount of effort for two years and then at the end of the day the million dollar view from the tops of the mountains. There was money spent, gear wrecked, repaired, and repeat. There were cuts, bruises and blisters. The long conversations after a job well done came after the pep talks along the way. All of these things got you to today. On December 15, 1983, the overturned wreckage of @bcrcmp #belljetranger CG-DXB was discovered at Cat Ears Creek, near #tofino. Cpl Francis Eugene JONES of #rcmpucluelet and pilot S/Cst Wayne Graham MYERS of #rcmpairservices based out of @rcmpcomoxvalley, had flown out of #comox at 0800hrs on December 14, to investigate thefts of logging and mining equipment. They were to fly along the #westcoast of #vancouverisland, but were never heard from again. Attempts to establish radio contact were unsuccessful, so a search began that evening, involving @coastguardcan, #pepair #casara, and the #pvmanyberries. Sadly, the bodies of JONES and MYERS were located in the wreckage. Investigation revealed that the helicopter had struck an unmarked cable strung across the creek, and then crashed into the water below. No #notam was published for the cable, and the owners hadn’t bothered to hang warning markers. A married father of two, Cpl Francis Eugene JONES was buried in Courtenay. He joined the @rcmpgrcpolice in 1966. A community park in the @districtofucluelet is named in his honour. A married father of two, S/Cst Wayne Graham MYERS was born in #princealbertsk, and a memorial service was held in #courtenaybc. Saturday Nov 25 while MSAR was doing HETS training with @valleyhelicopters and @chilliwacksearchandrescue the team got called out for a quad that had rolled over with two subjects close to Sayers Lake. MSAR responded from Kearsley recreation site, made contact with the subjects, and packaged them for evacuation. Huge thanks to @mission_fire @bc_ehs and @bc_flight_medics for their assistance with this call. Both subjects were handed off to BCEHS and transported to the hospital. Last weekend, members of Cranbrook SAR and @sparwoodsar participated in the Resource Road Driver Training by @overlandtrainingcanada . Because SAR teams are often operating on resource roads (like FSR’s), it’s important for them to know the rules, how to be safe on these roads and how to use proper radio communication. Because the roads can be treacherous and vehicles can get stuck (with limited phone reception), the volunteers were also taught multiple techniques to get unstuck, things like winches, ropes and changing of flat tires. Not only a valuable training for anyone who often finds themselves on these types of roads, also a lot of fun! Saturday night MSAR was called for two stranded fishermen on Norrish Creek. The subjects became stranded when the water rose due to heavy rain fall. Ground teams and Swiftwater teams located the subjects and brought them back to safety just before dark. This is a good reminder for all of us that the environment can suddenly change with weather conditions. Be prepared for the changing conditions and alway leave a Trip Plan.
