Following dreams … I’ve been sitting on some lovely news for a few days while I let it sink in, but I can contain no longer, here it is 🥁 This week I was selected to be a maker member at Make Southwest ! This is such a big honour for me and an even bigger rub on the back to have my work seen and accepted at that level - big wow 🙂 I’ve been visiting the gallery ever since I landed in Devon in Bovey Tracey 22 years ago, @makesouthwest and then @craftfestival when it began, played a big part in giving me the incentive and inspiration to go back to college and complete the creative degree I’d always wanted to do. I explored basketry and many other materials along the way as I raised my kids but for the last few years willow and basketry have lead the way and I think have given me the focus I needed. I’m not sure if any creatives brim with confidence but these kind of acknowledgements are such welcome boosts. Can’t wait for what’s next 🙂 #basketmaker #wilowartist #makingspacetomake

Teaching this lovely daughter of mine to weave has been an epic journey. Zen has grown up surrounded by baskets and coffins and made her first baskets as a child and has been adamant (like they do!!) that she never wanted to be a weaver... Good old Old French willow - kept damp for nearly three weeks and some of still usable - which couldnt be said of the white which I'd totally forgotten about and had remained damply wrapped in plastic for over a week (some amazing colours, but definitely not workable). Today's bga select comes from renowned artist, Shoko Fukuda. Fukuda has been internationally exhibited for over 10 years, and we were honored to include her work in our latest exhibition, Discourse. Fukuda is interested in “distortion” as a characteristic of basket weaving. By selecting materials and methods for weaving with the natural distortion in mind, Fukuda sees the possibility of developing works with eloquent and undulating twists and turns. delighted to get to make another shopping trolley basket for a lovely (and ever patient!) customer. Doubly delighted that I found I’d taken such good notes I could follow them to make it, having made the last one I made as an actual copy. Triply delighted that I found the notes in my folder ( instead of potentially having to work from photos and a few measurements). Made the whole making process very smooth! Processing redwood bark. I hadn't ever worked with redwood before - it's amazing how white it comes off the log and how pink the initial splits are (2nd photo). The bark loses the pink as they dry, but it's a really beautiful color to find inside! It will be interesting to see how it works up, especially compared to western red cedar. In process. Ribbed basket framed with a single continuous length of wild grapevine. Working on these recent grapevine baskets has been an immense joy. They’re dynamic and continuously morphing as tension builds, so I get to constantly discover what shape the material is going to take. These are also quite slow in coming together. Working without a mold or supports, the form wants to close in on itself under the tension of weaving.
