My mom just sent me a couple of old photos of me and my brothers in our teen years, and it hit me that in a couple of months, I am turning 40. 40 years! Where did the days go? And as my 40th birthday approaches, I can't help but reflect on how different things turned out from what I expected this milestone age to be like. There were dreams and aspirations that I imagined would have been achieved by now, yet here I am, still on the path, wrestling with unfulfilled expectations. I had envisioned entering my 40s with a firm grip on my career, a settled family life, and a strong sense of security. Social Media. An endless stream of happy smiling faces. Wealth and success. Picture perfect moments. Awe inspiring lives. Envy inducing lifestyles. That social media world looks pretty darn fabulous. And of course it would, because it’s not real life. This is a reminder to myself, to you reading, for anyone who needs it, that social media is not fact. It’s a few seconds, minutes or hours of someone’s world. Not the whole story. It is just the narrative people want to be seen online. In part none of us are to blame for what social media can be used for. But we are also accountable for what we post. If we looked at our social media feeds and viewed it as a person who hasn’t seen or spoken to us in years, what image would they be getting? A true reflection? That social media life probably wouldn’t really represent who we are or how we are feeling. And I know, because mine doesn’t. Does my social media for instance, imply that in fact I’ve just been made redundant for the first time in my life and that I am jobless and have no clue how my life is going to look like in the upcoming months? I know it doesn’t. All I am trying to say is, trust me, no one’s life is perfect, and we are all struggling in this life one way or another. The less flattering photos rarely make it to the feed. A beautiful photo just sells better. But in between the “acceptable” photos are the ones where you’re talking, or drowning, or the cellulite shows, or you’re picking sand out of your bikini bottoms.
