It was such a privilege accorded me by the 011 Presidential Air Fleet to talk on Your Mental Health and Its Impact on Your Relationshipn, and I was also given an Award of Excellence at the Couple’s Hangout organized for the staff of the Fleet and their spouses at their premises in FCT Abuja on the 14th April 2024. I spoke on stress and stressors; one of the important social factors that affect mental health is the amount and severity of stressful life events that people experience (Holmes & Rahe, 1967). Possible effects of overwhelming stress; 1. Stress can cause mental health problems. 2. And it can make existing problems worse. For example, if you experience lots of stress, this might lead you to develop a mental health problem like anxiety or depression. Or a traumatic period of stress might lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 3. Can lead to burnout. 4. Mental health problems can cause stress. You might find coping with the day-to-day symptoms of your mental health problem is stressful. You may also feel stressed about managing medication, healthcare appointments or other treatments. 5. You might use recreational drugs or alcohol to cope with stress. This could also affect your mental health, and cause further stress. Other people’s inability to meet your needs was never about you. It was about them. And their capacity to be present for you without the lens of their own unhealed wounds getting in the way. The thing we do as children though is we personalize our experiences and create meaning that there must be something wrong with us, leading to the formation of these limiting beliefs that go on to be the deciding factors around how we show up in life, including the quality of friendships and romantic relationships we attract and participate in. Those stories of limitation become the subconscious ways we seek to recreate that which reminds us of how we felt back then, reliving the tales of inadequacy and unworthiness as one ongoing self fulfilling prophecy. This is why we embark on the healing journey then. To unlearn our own stories and patterns of protection and give voice to the shadow parts that have been feeding our fears of rejection or abandonment for so long. Day 121 of 2024 The penultimate session of the counselling course today at @entmdesmpl, we finished off one unit, and started work on the last one, with a focus on what we have learned and what we want to do going forward. We got the felt pens out and wrote down our Personal Development Needs. Had a bit of time to kill from getting home till I had to leave for class, so I got myself some reading done with a 20 pages of Colour of Magic. Do you have an early riser? I have been there! My now 5 year old has been an early riser most of his little life! Some kiddos are just wired this way but this doesn’t mean there is not things you can do to help with this. One of the reasons we often see early mornings is due to bedtime being too late. When our little ones get into an over tired state, they fight sleep. This causes night wakings and early mornings. This is true for babies all the way up to toddlers and children. Start your routine a bit earlier and try and push that bedtime back. We want them to be falling asleep during their sleepy window to maximize on that lovely sleep hormone melatonin. If your child is ramped up at bedtime, you have missed the window! Consider how you are responding to the early morning wakings and come up with a CONSISTENT plan. 😡 Have you heard of anger as a secondary emotion? Where there is anger, there is often deeper, vulnerable feelings at play. Sometimes it’s hard to see anything other than seeing red, and if that’s the case then take some time to bring yourself back down. However, I would encourage you to explore the deeper reasons for why something may have triggered you in that way and made you so angry. Be honest with yourself even if it’s uncomfortable. Often times we avoid feeling vulnerable emotions because they make us uncomfortable (and who frickin wants that!!!). Coming down from anger and apologizing for how you may have acted is a bandaid fix. Figuring out the root of where this anger is coming from can allow you a better understanding of yourself, and to be more preventative in how you feel and show up. *cue* a nervous system put at ease. I remember when someone first told me this in the midst of a self-doubt spiral and it had never occurred to me before. I thought my anxiety was an accurate reflection of my skillset, which of course only made things worse. One of the hardest things to do is to let go of control (or letting go of trying to have certainty where it doesn’t exist). We can’t solve every problem all at once, which is why anxiety can become so overwhelming - our thoughts create a plethora of loose end “what ifs” without following them down the path to resolution. The reality is that we never have to solve everything all at once. We face problems one at a time because all anyone can ever do is one thing at a time. So next time you’re doubting yourself, know that the doubt probably means you care a lot, and it probably means you’re more capable than you think. Let’s talk about repressed anger… Anger is generally seen as something bad and something you need to suppress and hide away. However, anger is a natural emotion, neither good or bad, it just is and it is telling us something. What is Depression and what are my treatment options? Depression is a common mental health condition characterised by low mood. Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. The other day my RMT (appreciate you @jchangrmt) told me I should write a book called “4 + 1 and then some”. I laughed out loud. For one, that is one hilarious book title! And another, who would read a book I write? I mean, I’m a nobody. But I’ve been learning that I am a somebody. God has been reminding me over and over again that He made me to be a unique individual with a purpose. I’ve had to navigate childhood trauma, complex trauma, grief and loss, depression, the challenges of marriage, and learning how to love myself in order to love my children! WHAT A JOURNEY. I’ll be honest, I wrote a book on parenting, but I couldn’t commit to marketing it because I just didn’t think it’d help any parents with the plethora of resources already out there. But, I have read a bunch of resources in my parenting journey, and none of them encompassed the healing I needed with the parenting! So much stuff comes up while you’re parenting and healing while learning to parent differently from how you were parented is SO HARD. So… if you’re looking for a resource to heal while parenting, I’m editing the ebook I wrote, and I’m going to make it available for free once it’s finished. I’ve been doing so much soul searching the last few years and just feel that it’s not parents that need healing… we are all learning and growing as we face our traumas and function in our day to day lives! That’s why I started my own private counselling practice. Flourish Well was created to help you thrive in your context. What an adventure life has been! Juggling 4 kids and a husband is not easy! The other day, my RMT told me that I should write a book called “4 + 1 and then some”. I laughed out loud. For one, that is one hilarious book title! And another, who would read a book I write? I mean, I’m a nobody. But I’ve been learning that I am a somebody. God has been reminding me over and over again that He made me to be a unique individual with a purpose. I’ve had to navigate childhood trauma, complex trauma, grief and loss, depression, the challenges of marriage, and learning how to love myself in order to love my children! WHAT A JOURNEY. I’ll be honest, I wrote a book on parenting, but I couldn’t commit to marketing it because I just didn’t think it’d help any parents with the plethora of resources out there. But, I have read a bunch of resources in my parenting journey, and none of them encompassed the healing I needed with the parenting! So much stuff comes up while you’re parenting and healing while learning to parent differently from how you are parented is SO HARD. So… if you’re looking for a resource to heal while parenting, I’m editing the ebook I wrote, and I’m going to make it available for free once it’s finished. I’ve been doing so much soul searching the last few years and just feel that it’s not parents that need healing… we are all learning and growing as we face our traumas and function in our day to day lives! That’s why I started my own private counselling practice @flourishwelljourney That’s where you’ll find a bunch of free resources in the future. Including the parenting ebook.
