Not everyone learns the same way so why should they do homework or study the same way?? 🤔🤔⁠ ⁠ In this week’s #PWAP, I answer the age-old question, should parents let their teens pull all-nighters? ⁠😴📚⁠ .⁠ My short answer is ... yes! Obviously with some caveats and some important questions asked and answered. ⁠🤔⁠ .⁠ But if you're curious why I feel starting to do #schoolwork in the evening and going late into the night works for some kids, 🌙 then you need to read the story of one of my coaching clients. ⁠📚⁠ .⁠⁠ I have a coaching client who is a junior in college. Since the pandemic hit, 😷all of his classes have been virtual and asynchronous. He starts his “school day” at 9 pm and works late into the night. ⁠ ⁠ And his grades and even more importantly, his self-confidence, have never been better! 😀 Why? Because he figured out that his best practice is to work in the evenings. ⁠ ⁠ During the day, he feels no immediacy to get his work done. The day is long and there is plenty of time. However, once evening hits, he feels that clock ⏰ ticking – and the need to race against it. He figured out that prime time was his best time, and it would be a waste of his time to start earlier.⁠ ⁠ So, as long as the late nights 🌙 are NOT getting in the way of getting up in the morning or feeling exhausted the next day, and they are turning in their assignments on time, my advice to you is to allow your student the freedom and flexibility to work the way they need.⁠ ⁠ Let me know if you agree. But here’s the thing: I can’t promise that symptoms will disappear overnight. Every kid is different, and ADHD isn't a one-size-fits-all situation. But here’s the good news! 🎉 While I can't guarantee immediate changes, I've seen so many kids improve when their families commit to the process (over 1000 kids with ADHD)! First…if you are stuck in your car (or couch, or bed) and you are ok with being there…then no shame. If you are taking a few minutes to breath or decompress or enjoy some respite from the demands of life, than embrace that and enjoy. If you don’t want to be stuck…. than take a second to and try asking yourself these questions… Do I know what’s next? Am I stuck because the path is unclear? Can I identify one action item to start with? Am I overwhelmed? How can I reduce overwhelm? Do I need to talk it out, write it out? What’s the least overwhelming task on my list to start with? Am I stuck because I’m under stimulated? Are the tasks ahead of me too boring? How can I add interest? (Try a podcast, music etc). Am I giving myself enough permission to take breaks and do things that bring me joy daily? Or am I stuck here because I feel I need to “sneak” those moments? One of the first steps to getting unstuck is to build awareness around the reasons behind your inertia. By pausing long enough to intentionally ask yourself these types of questions you can identify what you need next to get moving. What keeps you stuck? Today’s post is about top tools and resources I use in my business. Here are my top 5. Pop any of yours in the comments. I’m always up for tips!! 1. Boo. The Director of Floof. Couldn’t do this without her. 2. Planner pad. I have tried so many planners and this one works best for me. Top bit is everything, next bit is everything onto specific days. Next bit is timebox. 3. My hand. Done it forever. Anything that I MUST remember is written on my hand as the only place I will definitely look. 4. Analogue. Altho I love my MacBook I can’t function without paper and pens. 5. Café office. I need background noise to work otherwise I can’t concentrate. I need to be able to have part of my brain distracted so I can focus. Cafés give me the background noise and tea so I can do that. @esquirescoffeeboscombe

Sensory issues are a real struggle for autistic people. It's not something they can just hit pause on whenever they want. Their brains process sensory information differently than those of neurotypical people. Read that again. Their brains. It is not a choice, and they have no power over it, the same way that you have no power over how your brain processes all your sensory information. Sounds that might seem perfectly normal to you can be overwhelming and even painful to me. Bright lights, strong smells, and certain textures can all be major triggers. We are constantly bombarded with sensory information from our surroundings. Everyday sounds, lights, textures, smells, and even social interactions can become overwhelming and lead to sensory overload for many autistic people. And as if it weren’t enough, autistic brains are wired in such a way that these sensory inputs can literally hijack their entire thought process, making it incredibly difficult for them to focus on anything else. Lots of teenagers, especially girls, seem to be diagnosed later on in teenage years and I hope I can inspire a generation into learning about what it is and how to thrive and use the traits as a superpower instead of being consumed by what struggles it comes with. 5 april 2024. Met zijn 3en zaten we daar in dat kamertje. Ik had Koen gevraagd om met me mee te gaan. Het is 5 dagen voor mijn 46e verjaardag wanneer ik de uitslag van alle testen krijg en mijn lieve psycholoog me verteld dat ik ADHD heb. Opluchting. Hoewel ik diep van binnen het antwoord al wist. Eindelijk hadden ze verder en dieper gekeken op mijn verzoek. Dankbaar. Tranen. Puzzelstukjes vallen op zijn plaatst. Waarom ik als kind al prikkel gevoelig was, veel rust en regelmaat nodig had. Waarom ik al heel jong voor mezelf structuur aangebracht had in mijn leven om overzicht te houden, zelfs sommige dingen op het dwangmatige af. Waarom ik altijd beneden in de huiskamer huiswerk wilde maken met prikkels om me heen. Bij stilte had ik nog minder focus. Waarom ik liefst ook meteen alles af wilde hebben, dan had ik rust en overzicht en was het klaar ☑️ Dat is nu nog zo. Gas erop. Waarom ik zover ik me kan herinneren al een vol actief hoofd heb en er zo ook mee in bed lag. Alsof er een formule 1 wagen kei hard rondjes rijdt in een flipperkast en alle knopjes van gedachtes gebeurtenissen en ideeën aanraakt😵‍💫 Waarom het zo vaak ook gaat in gesprekken. Plop plop plop alle lijntjes gaan open en maken verbindingen met andere gedachtes en ik er ook nog een beeld bij wil vormen waardoor ik van de hak op de tak ga en een niet ADHD’er denkt wacht effe ?! We hadden het toch hier over🙃 En waarom ik zo creatief ben, deels door adhd. Waarom ik gevoelig ben voor sferen en stemmingen van anderen. Waarom ik zo makkelijk contact en verbinding maak met anderen. Maar ook dingen er uit kan flappen 😅 Waarom muziek liefdevolle gebeurtenissen of juist agressieve gebeurtenissen me intens kunnen raken in mijn ❤️ En zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan met voorbeelden 🫢 Waarom ik dit verhaal hier deel? Omdat ik nog steeds dezelfde Vanessa ben als voordat ik de ‘diagnose’ kreeg en dat het niet iets is om me over te schamen , net als andere diagnoses die mensen hebben. En ik weet dat er veel anderen net als ik er laat achter komen waarom ze oa die innerlijke onrust hebben en uiteindelijk te horen krijgen wat er achter zit.
