April 26 marks 18 years since my beautiful sister passed away. Mandy had a long and courageous battle with mental health and addictions. Everyone always says time heals everything, but I haven’t found that to be true. The longer life moves on without her, I realize how much life she missed out on. Her son graduating Her nieces and nephews being born Family holidays She was one of the funniest people I knew, always ready with a joke, always witty and always coming up with crazy ideas. She beat to her own drum, always. Losing her was a pivotal moment in my life as I too was struggling with addictions at the time. It changed the projection of my life. Eventually I got sober, I went into university to become a social worker, and eventually decided to live life as free and loud as I could, I decided I would live life for the two of us. And so, I got rid my my condo, sold my belongings and left for Australia on my own. I am not a super spiritual person, but one day I woke up extra early and climbed a hill at the most eastern tip of Australia. I sat there and watched the whales breach as the sun came up. It was the first time since she passed that I had felt her presence. I told her I forgave her, and told her I was sorry for all the pain and suffering she had endured. That day I felt like her spirit was set free and I promised to keep living unapologetically for the both of us. (Swipe to see the photo) I’ve been struggling with ways to honour her this year, we talk to our boys very openly about their auntie Mandy, and her son even came and lived with us for a period of time. We decided as a family we would run the @sarariel1 family 5km in support of Sara Riel addictions & mental health awareness, to honour her and the others we have loved and lost. Last year, sadly my best friend of 25 years, also lost her beautiful sister (who was like a sister to me) to a long struggle with mental health. It is so painful to watch the aftermath a loss like this leaves behind. Mandy and Mel💕🌺 The link is in my bio, please consider donating to this important cause. #mentalhealth #addictions #blackballoonday #sarariel #run #bettertogether

•Black Balloon Day 2024• As we round out National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, I want to shed light on a day that often goes overlooked - Black Balloon Day. Earlier this month I celebrated Black Balloon day in Columbus Ohio, by honoring those we have lost from overdose. March 6th is dedicated every year to honor the lives lost symbolized by a black balloon for each individual who has tragically lost their battle with addiction/overdose. It’s important to remember that behind each statistic is a person who was loved and battling a disease. Black Balloon Day serves as a reminder of the devastating impact that substance abuse can have on not only the individual struggling with addiction, but also their loved ones left behind. Let us remember the lives lost and strive to create a future where no person or family has to experience the pain of losing a loved one to overdose. If you or someone you know is struggling, please contact the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Hotline at: 1-800-662-4357

On Wednesday, we joined the Town of Weymouth's Prevention Alliance and many other local organizations to somberly commemorate #BlackBalloonDay. Black Balloon Day is a national event when families, loved ones, and communities come together to remember lives lost to overdose and to raise awareness about overdose deaths, which are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. We placed black balloons at the entrances to facilities across South Shore Health, including at South Shore Hospital, the Grayken Center for Treatment at 797 Main Street, and at 2 Pond Park in Hingham. We affirm our commitment to helping individuals with substance use disorder and to supporting those who have lost someone they love to addiction. We are grateful to our Addiction Medicine and Grayken Center colleagues who work tirelessly every day to help our patients with substance use issues and their families, and we stand in solidarity with anyone who has lost a loved one to overdose. #Weymouth #SouthShore #SubstanceUseDisorder #SouthShoreHealth

Hi my name is Naloxone HCI.................. But I am more commonly referred to as Narcan. You can call me either because often, by those who do not truly know me, I have been called a lot worse. There are those who may consider me an enabler, and in some ways, I guess they are correct. I do enable many things such as breathing, second chances, and recovery. I enable daughters to have mothers and fathers to have sons. Ask one of the 13,265 Indiana residents that were revived after a potentially fatal overdose in 2020 what they think about me. They easily could be your neighbor, co-worker, or family member. I have been used on people from all demographics, as the overdose events that I help reverse do not discriminate. There are so many misunderstandings about who I am and what I do, so I would like to clear my name. Most commonly, I am administered by emergency personnel or a loved one of someone who struggles with substance use disorder, not by someone who wants to use “just a little more”. My presence does not promote riskier substance usage, as research has shown that overdose reversal often is the catalyst that starts the journey into recovery. I am not bogging down the emergency responders as I was administered in less than 2% of all of Indiana’s emergency incidents in 2020, and data does not support the false claims that I am always being used over and over on the same individuals. I am not free, I mean what in life really is? I am not an excuse.... I am not harmful in any way....... What I am is a vital part of emergency care. I have helped to save the lives of many people who have gone on to live an extraordinary life. People who suffer from substance use disorder are often vulnerable to this because of their genetics, childhood trauma, peer pressure, and exposure to various substances either medically or through experimentation. The facts are that no one wakes up one day wanting to have an addiction. However, people can overcome their struggle with substance use disorder, as long as they are still breathing. I can be that persons next breathe....... #blackballoonday #Every11Minutes

Today is Black Ballon Day. It is a day to remember those who have died due to addiction and overdoses. My brother was my best friend. He was the one who showed me both sides of addiction- the black pit and pulling myself out of the darkness of addiction. He was amazing. He was brilliant. His laughter could instantly make you smile. His sense of adventure and exploration was incredible. He always had my back even when his world was dark. He will always be the reason why I choose sobriety. He is the reason why I am who I am. His life, like so many others was taken way too soon. 🖤🖤 14 weeks without my first best friend 🖤🖤 “Addiction is a special kind of hell, it takes the soul of the addict and breaks the hearts of everyone who loved them.” I had no idea that today was Black Balloon Day.. i saw it from someone i recently met through the amazing job I started a few months back. She went through what i am going through just a year and a half prior, along with her sister who happens to be married to a great guy i went to high school with. I truly am a believer that everything happens for a reason. They have been there for me right away on 11/29/23, with not even knowing me that long. I feel i found a job i love with people who are great with a rewarding company for a reason. It’s like my angels already above knew that my life was going to change forever and as much as i wish no one experiences this lose, i met 2 amazing people who feel the same heartbreak. They were both a big part of helping me with this life changing loss 💔 So, for this day, I want to remember my big brother and their brother (even though i never got the pleasure to meet him) I’m sure they have met and are watching over their sisters, and of course parents and loved ones!! #addictionawareness #blackballoonday

Before the day ends, I wanted to bring to light an important day. Today is black ballon day in honor of those who have lost the battle with addiction. I know one too many people that fought the good fight but lost there battle in the end. Did you know in 2023, 112,000 people in the US died of an overdose? That is equivelent to 130 people per day in the US Did you know 72% of overdose deaths are caused by opiates? Opioids kill more than 136 Americans every day. Since 1999, the US has lost MORE than a million people due to overdose. Please dont become one of the statistics! There is help out there if you want it. Please know if your struggling, reach out. We have wayyy to many to this horriable disease. #blackballoonday #recoveryispossible #gonebutnevereverforgotten

3/7/2024, 4:42:49 AM

Opioid addiction in the US is an epidemic. Black Balloon Day helps create awareness around the importance of providing support to those struggling with substance use disorder and their loved ones. Today, we remember and will never forget the thousands of lives we have lost to drug overdose. #blackballoonday #awareness #neverforget

3/7/2024, 4:40:35 AM

Watching someone you love, that has fought so hard to beat addiction, throw everything away and sink back onto a life that will most likely lead to jail or death, is one of the hardest things you will ever do. You want to help them back to a clean and sober life but you realize by doing this, as you have so many times before, will now just be enabling them because it will show them that you will always be there to bail them out. You want to grab and shake them and say "Wtf are you doing" but at some point you realize that it wouldnt make a difference. So you sit back and watch the tragedy unfold, as if you are watching a movie. Feeling helpless to stop it, feeling like you haven't done enough to help, even though you know only the addict can help themselves. Loving a drug addict or an active alcoholic is the hardest thing you will ever have to go through. I have friends and family who have gone through this battle. Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic. Americans are more likely to die of an opioid overdose than they are from a car accident or by a gun. Black Balloon Day helps create awareness around the important issue of providing support to those struggling with substance use disorder and their loved ones. Battling a drug and/or an alcohol addiction is a beast for the person addicted and the ones who love them. So l am asking you to stand with me in prayer for every family member and friend who has lost their battle with drugs and alcohol and those who continue to conquer it! Put this on your page for one hour if you know someone who has or had an addiction. Many will be hesitant to copy and paste this. Some of you won't paste this but I think I know the ones who will. And thanks in advance! To anybody on my friends list that may be currently struggling, I am rooting for you. To anybody on my friends list who is sober, I am rooting for you. I will forever be an advocate, I love you Micheal and I miss you. Always. #blackballoonday
