ACORN WOODPECKER with ACORN in its beak..!!! ============================================= ▪️Acorn woodpeckers, as their name implies, depend heavily on acorns for food. Acorns are such an important resource to the California populations that acorn woodpeckers may nest in the fall to take advantage of the fall acorn crop, a rare behavior in birds. . . . ▪️Acorns are stored in small holes drilled especially for this purpose in “granaries” or “storage trees”—usually snags, dead branches, utility poles, or wooden buildings. Storage holes—always in dead tissue such as bark or dead limbs—are used year after year, and granaries can consist of thousands of holes, each of which may be filled by an acorn in the autumn. . . . ▪️Although acorns are an important back-up food resource, acorn woodpeckers primarily feed on insects, sap, and fruit. They can be seen sallying from tree limbs to catch insects, eating fruit and seeds, and drilling holes to drink sap. The woodpeckers then collect acorns and find a hole that is just the right size for the acorn. As acorns dry out, they are moved to smaller holes and granary maintenance requires a significant amount of the bird’s time. The acorns are visible, and a group defends its granary against potential cache robbers like Steller’s jays and western scrub-jays. In some more tropical parts of its range the acorn woodpecker does not construct a “granary tree”, but instead stores acorns in natural holes and cracks in bark. With many species you see one and you’ve seen them all, this isn’t the case for coyotes. Every one I’ve met was an individual. Some were curious, others quite bold, while some would never dare expose themselves for more than a second; all were very dedicated to the ways they would navigate through lives. This was the very expressive face of a coyote I called Iztac. A very confident but never crossed the line into foolish. This engagement session at Carrizo Plain National Monument was EVERYTHING I hoped for 😍🌼 I’m so glad @lilbron_james & @alexandertkim were up for the drive! I visited last year and fell in love with all the wildflowers at this lesser-known Californian NPS site, so when we got a lot of rain again this winter, I knew I had to go back this year and bring a couple along for some dreamy flower photos. We wandered through the park, finding blooms and views along the way (while also chatting about future adventure plans + whiskey, of course!) Lils and Alexander are the sweetest couple and so easygoing & fun, it made this afternoon a breeze. If you decide to visit Carrizo Plain NM during the superbloom, be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles so we can enjoy these amazing views for years to come!
I have been waking up extra early to catch these 4:15 am live bible study sessions, and I’m thoroughly addicted to them. I used to wake up and consume news on X while I sipped my coffee, and I would get incredibly anxious about the state of the world. The man who hosts these bible studies is so fun and funny and jovial; they just make me happy and set my day up in a much more positive way. I didn’t grow up in a religious household, so my knowledge of the bible is slim to nothing, but I have my own relationship with God and my spirituality that is very sacred to me. Learning about the scripture and how it relates to our modern lives has been lovely. He does them from his back porch, and his dogs are always running around, and the whole scene and his presence bring me peace. . Some photos from the last week! Surprise! It’s not every day that you find a bobcat when you’re looking for owls. I was owling with a friend, scanning the tree tops when I spotted a large shape on a limb 20 feet off the ground. It seemed too horizontal to be an owl, and when I put my lens on it, I discovered it was a bobcat playing peek-a-boo through the branches! I have seen bobcats climb trees, posts and telephone poles but this is the highest tree limb I’ve ever seen one lounging on. What a thrill - time in the wilderness is full of surprises. Is anyone as excited as I am for the start of quail season? Okay, probably not, but you should be! At least in the Bay Area, California Quail get a lot skulkier late in the fall. They start emerging and becoming more visible in the spring. My best guess is that they spend more time under cover in the winter because there are more hawks and other birds of prey in the area. Come springtime, the males find prominent perches from which to call and claim their territories. After the chicks hatch, the males get out of child rearing by going about their very important "sentry duty" in which they do their best to look dashing while the females tend to the chicks. The females occasionally take over from the males to show that they too can look quite spiffy up on a tall perch. A Coyote emerges from shadows. I've fallen into kind of a default style over the last few years, which is more or less "decent to good light, edited to be bright and vibrant while staying realistic." At this point I can basically dial it in on autopilot if I have a good raw file to work with. While I like those shots, I've been trying to work on more interesting light and different moods to avoid getting stuck in a rut. This is my favorite result so far. There were some brightly lit trees to the Coyote's right that would have ruined the mood I was going for, so you're all going to have to deal with a subject looking out of the frame instead of into it. Not even sure my landscapes are relevant on IG anymore lol. Crazy scrolling through old pics and looking at comments of old followers. Seeing IG friends who stuck with posting all the time absolutely killing it with massive amounts of followers. I always think about how this account would have done if I was consistent with it... however I'm very happy with the way things turned out and that I'm able to make a living with photography. If you asked me in the moment of this SF pic where I'd be in the future with my photography career I would have never told you I shoot 30+ weddings a year. Mexican grey wolf At long last I was able to get some decent photograph the endangered Mexican grey wolf, also known as lobo. Despite the name, these wolves historically occupied several territories that we now consider states in the USA (another example of the boarder jumping people and animals). These shots are close up because I didn’t want to include the presence of invasive weeds that plague almost all wildlife photos haha. It’s always been a dream of mine to photograph wild wolves, and it still is because today is April 1st haha. That said I really did take these photos but the lobo was captive.
