I've never tought that one day i could say those words : I Will have a Brett Kissel concert in my hood. The place i call home. You see as quebec country fans, driving kilometers for a show is a part of "the deal" something we just do to have the chance to see our favorites in live concert. And if you going back 10 years ago, you were able to count on your fingers how many shows a year we could have in the province. So when i become @brettkissel fans 10 years ago i had this list of "fans stuff" i was dreaming to make happen. It started almost 8 years ago at my first show, a bright pink poster annoncing my number 1 item on my bucketlist : a concert. And it goes down from a meet and greet to holding a ccma award to see the backstage of his concert. I have so many things that i can say "check", a few others to still hope to make happen and the one that i will check on the list in a month : the concert on my home stomping ground. To say what it means to me ... it is definitly the most emotional concert (so far ) i will attend. I am so happy to see that day coming you have no idea. Swipe left for 3 clips! Hank Snow recorded “I’m Gonna Bid My Blues Goodbye” in Montreal in late 1945, but the track wasn’t released on the RCA Victor label in America until September 1948. These early Snow records were still billing him as ‘Hank Snow (The Singing Ranger)’ on the labels and the backing was credited to ‘His Rainbow Ranch Boys.’ The ‘Boys’ were (assumed Canadians) Johnny Beaudoin on steel guitar from 1936-1948, and Teddy Miller on string bass from 1942-1948. Beaudoin lays out some dreamy island-sounding steel on this track. Once RCA booked Snow into RCA’s Chicago studio in March 1949, then in Nashville in 1950, the Rainbow Ranch Boys were a semi-rotating mixture of RCA session men. The ‘Singing Ranger’ moniker remained on most of Snow’s RCA labels well into the late 1950’s. I don’t know what happened to Beaudoin & Miller after 1948, but hopefully they earned steady work afterwards, maybe in Canada.

RCA Victor was just attempting to break Hank Snow in the U.S. in 1947-48, mostly by reissuing some of his 1945-48 Canadian RCA recordings on the American RCA label. “Just a Petal From a Beautiful Bouquet” was recorded in Montreal in December 1945 and issued on Canadian RCA in 1946 as a b-side. When RCA finally issued this pressing in the U.S. in September 1948, they released the song as the a-side with a different track on the flip. A few months later in March 1949, Snow finally crossed the border to record in Chicago with producer Stephen Sholes and American studio musician backing, and by late 1949 RCA succeeded in breaking Hank in the U.S. when he landed his first U.S. Top 10 hit. We’ll get to that one as we work through 1949 in the future.

Last week Thursday was a special night featuring Doug Johnson - @ccmaofficial Pedal Steel Player of the Year - at the Brantford Polish Hall! The informational session was organized by the @brantfordmusiciansassociation who presented a special award for his many achievements! Doug started playing steel guitar at the age of 8 and gave backyard performances by age 11! During one of these sessions Terry Sumsion stuck his head over the fence and told him he'd be playing in his band some day. Doug traveled with Terry Sumsion for over 10 years, but wanted to redirect his focus on becoming more of a session musician, work on recordings and has worked with many Canadian and Nashville musicians including @genewatsonmusic and many, many others. Doug is a humble, down to earth person, who loves music, after the formal session I got to play one of my favourite Gene Watson songs, Got No Reason for Goin' Home, modulated in A Major, which Doug played flawless and @fredlewis1979 sang it along very well from memory. This was a major item off my bucket list; Play guitar or piano with real pedal steel in the band!!! Follow him along this Summer in select Ontario locations with the Southbound Band!

June 1st I'll be headed to my hometown of Barrington, NS to play at this year's first ever charity fundraiser for the areas that were affected by the numerous wildfires last year.
