It was a dark and rainy night as I sipped my late cup of herbal tea in front of my little wood stove. I heard that there had been an accident not far from here and then a truck had caught on fire up along the Grand Cascapedia River. I thought about the volunteers from our local municipal fire department up there in the rain doing what they could to deal with the situation. How lucky we are to have them. I also thought about the many floods that had happened along the Cascapedia and how a winter flood years ago had been so destructive that several houses had to be moved down river to safer grounds. Those people had lived through some hard times. As I watched the fiery flames dance in the stove, and felt the warming comfort from its heat, I was grateful to be home on such a wet night. Because sometimes we take too many good things for granted. What had been a booklet collection of stories from the Grand Cascapedia River, has turned into a book of forgotten tales from the river that runs through my home town. The Grand Cascapedia is a river where great fishing stories are told. But here on this fabled river that runs through the forested mountains of the Cascapedia Valley, there are also the stories about the people who made their way to this beautiful river. This is a collection of intriguing stories about some of Cascapedia’s richest and most interesting anglers. It includes the untold story of a real princess who just happened to be Queen Victoria’s daughter and why she kept some secrets to herself about her time on the river. There is also the story of a very rich fisherman who was found shot at his fishing camp on the river…who pulled the trigger? What angler from one of the richest families in America bought a camp on the river and also bought Amelia Earhart a plane to fly across the Atlantic? What tragedy happened to the richest man in Canada while on the Cascapedia? What fisherman inspired Ian Fleming to write the best selling book called Goldfinger, that was later turned into a movie starring Sean Connery as James Bond, agent 007. Well I finally finished another collection of forgotten stories about the Gaspe Coast. Although I knew these stories well, for I spent 12 years managing the Cascapedia River Museum, this writing adventure took me back in time on this world famous river. This collection tells the story of E. W. Davis and his mysterious death on the Cascapedia. What really happened to him? There is the story of why the richest man in Canada came to the river to live out a dream and why it ended there. There is the story of a very determined woman who bought Amelia Earhart her first plane and why she came to fish the Grand Cascapedia River. There is also the story of a real princess who came to the river. There were many rumours told about her, for to have Queen Victoria’s daughter around, certainly gave people a reason to talk. But Louise kept her secrets to herself about her time on the river, and so did her fishing guide. And of course there are a few stories about those Cascapedia Giants that are said to still swim through the waters of the Grand Cascapedia River, which is for sure is a very good thing!
