Yesterday, on Indigenous Veterans Day, this monument was unveiled as we celebrated our Mi’gmaq Veterans and Indigenous Veterans at large, past and present. From my August trip to Mi’gmaq territory in eastern Quebec: 1. Dwayne Ward (left) has been running an MMA gym in Listuguj for 11 years. He showed me some moves and told me about how sobriety changed his life. 2. Amanda Larocque (left) and Deven Condo-Mitchell of Gesgapegiag were the first ever Mi’gmaq couple to compete on Amazing Race Canada. They said the experience brought them closer together. 3. Amanda Larocque is also a powwow dancer, skills she managed to use during one of the dance challenges. 4. Dona Jerome is and Elder-in-Residence at the Walgwan Centre in Gesgapegiag, an addictions centre for Indigenous teens.
