1/3 NOT Barbara Stauffacher Solomon - It's been a week since her passing on May 8th, but we only just found out a few days ago. We thought you might like to see something of what we found when we ventured into Northern California to find these treasures of paint and whimsy, executed through her very particular, precise Swiss-inflected eye. One of the great practitioners of #supergraphics , Ms. Solomon has become synonymous with the work, even as she became so much more, as a landscape/architect, artist, and beloved family matriarch. Here an image that didn't make it into Issue 02, earlier this year. Even before Issue 01 was a thing, we knew her work was something we were going to feature one day, one way or another. ***[Edited:] We have come to learn that this work was by #MathaAndJerryWagner , and while these posts were meant in honor of Ms. Stauffacher Solomon, we still want to celebrate this work which is every bit in the spirit of what we knew of the great lady, and all of supergraphics as a whole. This moment stands equally good with all credit given to the Wagners, whom we'll be glad to learn more about. Thanks, Mr. Keim for the correction. This quietly hugely influential artist died today at 96. I have been so inspired by her work, I could never express to what degree. If you haven’t heard of her I’ve added a couple of blurbs from @wikipedia included in her biography. I often feel I am artistically chasing the world as it was when I first looked at it and I know her hand was all around me in the 70s and 80s and onward! Thank you! 🤍🕊️ “Barbara Ethel “Bobbie”Solomon (née Levé; December 5, 1928 – May 7, 2024) was an American landscape architect and graphic designer. She was best known for her large-scale interior ‘supergraphics’ and exterior signage at Sea Ranch, a private estate with a Utopian vision in Sonoma County, California…” “…Halprin went on to recommend her to other architects in the San Francisco area who let her ‼️*design what she wanted*‼️. She went on to receive two American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards for her work at Sea Ranch. Stauffacher Solomon was an instructor at Harvard University and Yale University, where she was invited by Charles Moore, whom she had met while working at Sea Ranch, to lead a studio on supergraphics in 1968. The studio was a week-long project creating two-dimensional graphics that reinforced the architecture of Yale University’s Art and Architecture elevators. It's not true that present-day modernist architects like the cities they build. In the 1970s, many of these architects were already deeply dissatisfied with the depressing appearance of modernist cities. As a reaction, a movement emerged in the mid-1970s that questioned the rejection by the vanguard orthodoxy of classical composition and ornamentation: postmodernism. The rapid success of this movement shows the extent of discontent among architects with modernist architecture. Unfortunately, postmodernists did not feel capable of questioning the established dogma that classicism was totalitarian and anti-progressive. As a consequence, they proposed an ironic classicism, deliberately false, constructed with materials of exaggeratedly industrialized finish, attached to the structure as a manifestly artificial cladding, like a child's construction game. The result was horrifying, but at that time it was stimulatingly bold and amusing compared to the tedious panorama of the previous decades. In a short time, these construction jokes became outdated, and only their ugliness remained. Disillusioned, modernist architects continued to build conventional buildings and considered the resulting ugliness inevitable. And caught by botanical artist Margaret Flockton in graphite and watercolour... as part of 'Forest Flora of New South Wales'. You'll just have to imagine the hot pink flowers in clusters along trunks & branches Also called watermelon tree, and tasting watery and a bit like w/m, Syzygium moorei is a 'Big Scrub' rainforest tree whose native range straddling the NSW / Queensland border is much reduced by clearing (80% gone in NSW, 60% in Qld., for forestry, agriculture / dairying and urbanisation). Should be way better known and grown. Doing my bit, one or two babies at a time. The #hiddengem and expressive Sea Ranch retail/office building by MLTW evokes its original use-that of a lumberyard. The tower reminds me of a wooden power tool or hydraulic press. The backside has a nice zig-zagging roof design. Why were we here? We attended a solo flute concert hosted by the @lyndondesigngallery and The Wine Shop @1000annapolisrd. It was an exhausting week but worth it, and I’m looking forward to getting to know this Charles Moore (1993) building a little bit better in the next few months. The colorful columns (and yes, the Nittany lion paws too) are beyond great!
An ANOLE, which doesn’t seem concerned about changing its color to galvanized. The reclusively unresponsive and reluctantly educable editors of the New York Times Spelling Bee seem unwilling to recognize the existence of these gentle creatures, despite my repeated entreaties. 🌊The view steals the show every time on this Sea Ranch job. And yet, under the canopy and bedding is a painted bed with storage drawers that I built for Charles Moore's brilliantly designed and lovingly maintained condo number nine. This was a very tight install (see 2nd pic), which in turn made it an impossibly hard piece to photograph, but here goes my best effort. There is something satisfyingly vindictive about extracting invasive tubers, roots, and rhizomes at the end of the day, when the soil is obligingly moist—it will be rock hard in a matter of weeks—and a wee dram in the gloaming occupying my thoughts. Back in this corner, it is a perfect storm of Cat’s Claw, Golden Bamboo, Hackberry—and Fire Ants, who don’t seem terribly pleased with my presence. I can’t wait to design and build this private little pocket garden, a mere 15’ x 15’. It will be a nexus where loads of water will be gathered and sent downhill for storage and irrigation. It has a terrific framed view of a corner of the Charles Moore House seldom seen. Today I’m also carefully restoring wonderful fountainheads that the Danish ceramacist Bente Hansen made for a Bing & Grøndhals exhibition in 1968. Each is one-of-a-kind. Even though I got up at 4:45 am, the day has just whizzed by. My last task today has been to dig this trench to extend the drainage system I’ve been installing. Now that I have the northwest quadrant cleared of stumps and roots, I’m solarizing it for another summer to kill off more Dolichandra unguis-cati rhizomes and tubers. In the autumn, then, I can start building the infrastructure for this section—irrigation, water collection, drainage, stone walls, an arbor, beds, and gravel walks. Our proposed improvements to the #hiddengem Pleasant Hill Civic Center, designed by Charles Moore FAIA/Urban Innovations Group/Fisher Friedman Architects in 1991, were approved by the City Council. Our work consists of fountain plaza repairs and improvements. 3D CGI computer modeling was used during the design process. We added the land-bridge to connect to the north side of the pond, a redesign of the fountain tiles, and a 5-year landscape plan. It’s a design collaboration between Robert Nebolon Architects and Kevin Keim @placenotes. #charlesmoore
