This is the last weekend to see "Candace Hill-Montgomery: Pretty Birds Peer Speak Sow Peculiar" at #WarholGrantee Blank Forms. It is the artist’s first exhibition in New York City since the 1980s, comprised of a number of weavings produced between 2016 and 2023 that demonstrate Hill-Montgomery’s wry sensibilities. In the works she invokes various pop culture icons, the Machiavellian fifteenth century monarch Richard III, and the surreptitious visit by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to Afghanistan in 2019. Her decades-long career has spanned a wide array of media and approach: painting, photography, installation art, public interventions, video, poetry, performance, and for the last ten years she has largely worked with weavings made on homemade looms, cunningly fusing an assemblage of techniques and materials. Coming in an edition size of 2000, the print shows three champagne glasses covered in confetti. The scene depicted in the print looks like the remnants of a glamorous party, much like the ones Warhol would host in his New York studio, The Factory. Committee was a commission piece that The Committee 2000 asked Warhol to create. They wanted the piece to be used for a fundraiser to raise money for their future projects. This print is an example of Warhol’s creative take on the traditional still life genre. The subject of the print as well as the arrangement of the glasses resonates with a still life painting, however the way Warhol uses colour in the print sets this piece apart from other still life works. Warhol renders the champagne glasses in bright yellow, blue and turquoise. The artist’s use of gestural lines, a characteristic element of his visual language, brings a sense of dynamism to the print. Couturier de l’époque disco, pilier du Studio 54, ses égéries étaient ses amies noctambules qu’il croisait chaque soir ; tout ce que comptait la jet-set new-yorkaise des années 70 et 80, Bianca Jagger, Pat Cleveland ou Anjelica Huston portaient sa fameuse robe dos nu pour se déhancher sur le piste de danse et dans les coursives… “Avec lui, c'était 87 tenues différentes dans un sac !" disait Liza Minelli en parlant de Halston et ses créations. Il avait démarré sa carrière comme chapelier (le pillow box hat que portait Jacqueline Kennedy le 20 janvier 1961, jour de l'investiture à la présidence de JFK). En 1966, Halston lance sa marque de mode et accessoires soutenu par de riches mécènes. Succès immédiat. Il aimait le classicisme et la simplicité, les lignes pures au point d'éviter boutonnières et fermetures éclair. Il avait d’ailleurs adopté un look signature unique, col roulé noir tous les jours et une cigarette à la main. Halston a révolutionné le monde de la mode américaine, il comprenait l’importance des célébrités pour porter ses créations, imaginait ses défilés comme de véritables shows. Mais si Pierre Cardin signa à tout va des licences, Haston passa à côté de ce nouveau marketing de la mode, dévalorisant sa marque en se rapprochant du distributeur JC Penney, perdant le droit d’user son nom, ses créations lessivées par les rachats successifs de conglomérats. Une décennie de règne, une vie brûlée par les deux bouts, un génie créatif désorienté perdu entre la poudre blanche, les cigarettes et des litres de whisky, entouré de déesses se trémoussant au son du disco chaque nuit. My record collection #132: 13 Most Beautiful... songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests (DVD) In July 2008 news of Dean & Britta’s 13 Most Beautiful… project first leaked to a couple of news sites “Dean Wareham is selecting 13 of the screen tests, and composing short pieces for each. The films will be projected on a large screen and the music will be performed live”. The show was first screened at The Byham Theatre in Pittsburgh on the 24th October of that year. The DVD was announced around the time of those first presenations and was available as a standard edition for $30 or a “limited deluxe edition” for $250 that had special packaging, a poster, and an 8x10 archival print. This copy is the standard edition that was sent to me by Dean just ahead of release. With a signed Bewitched postcard.
