Finally, I’m posting the last photo of Chicago. And in the background is my favourite song, The Secret o’Life, by James Taylor. The lyrics epitomises my take on living your life in the little time we have. It’s not just about my time in Chicago but my life through the passage of Time. So, in conclusion, what are my feelings about this passage of time I spent in Chicago? It’s a vibrant city, well planned and filled with incredible architecture, charming towns and parks. Its architecture not only includes my favourite, The St Regis, but also icons like the Willis Tower, Cloud Gate and other gems scattered between more iconic skyscrapers like the Big & Green, The Chevron and the Picasso sculpture. Then there’s the serene beauty of the Baha’i Temple that stands out with its own form and design. And even more innovative architecture that push the boundaries of design on smaller scaled projects like apartments and houses. I also enjoyed its vibrant and quirky neighbourhoods, friendly locals, and scenic bicycle rides along Lake Michigan’s shores. I hope some of you enjoyed my photo observations of Chicago. Took a long time to finish as I wanted to research and learn a little more in depth about the places I visited so that I can share the interesting facts and the background of all these places with you. This week’s church is the namesake of a famous Chicagoan - Dwight Lyman Moody, who began his religious life in the 1850s when he was only 17 years old. He was particularly devoted to helping “street children” and the poor. He made a habit of walking the city’s slums to find people to bring with him to services. He became world famous, traveling all over holding revivals. Today, his church is alive and well - filled with life and music. The Chicago City Council’s Budget Committee approved spending $70 million from city reserves that Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration anticipates will carry the city through the end of the year to support migrants. The 20 to 8 vote came after alderpersons pressed budget officials for clarity on the city’s finances for more than two hours and questioned why the funding hadn’t been allocated in Johnson’s budget passed last year. Despite assurances that pulling from the city’s reserves would not impact the city’s bond ratings or advanced pension payments, some alderpersons still expressed heartburn over the decision. On the morning of April 13, 1992 as commuters were heading to their offices in Chicago’s Loop, fish were swimming in the basement of the Merchandise Mart. No one could actually see the flood at street level. What began as a leak in a unique but mostly forgotten underground freight tunnel system became a two-week combination of comedy-of-errors and soap opera that cost almost $2 billion. The flood was in the underground tunnels - until then, most didn't even know of their existence. 60 miles of tunnels that mostly follow Chicago’s street grid, extending from Superior Street south to 16th Street had been created by 1914 to move such things as coal, water, packages, merchandise, and other items between the buildings that were connected to them, helping to east loop traffic congestion. This week’s church is Episcopalian, and one thing I’ve learned is that the history and controversies in this denomination stretch back nearly two hundred years and continue today. The Church of the Ascension is Anglo-Catholic and part of the Anglican Communion, a particularly traditional branch of the church. Honestly, it’s all confusing to a neophyte.
