While playing tennis with my nephews tonight, I decided to do a little Wimbledon-like commentator action with our play-by-plays—all in an accent. Before long, all my nephews were speaking in an accent with me, too! I think the accent made the evening all the more magical and memorable. My family-fun challenge for you tomorrow is to do something—make dinner, do homework, play a game—all with an accent, and see how it brings an extra spark to the day. You could even add in joyful play-by-play commentary as you do chores, finding ways to praise everyone's work in fun ways. And no worries if you can't do an accent well—mine was part British, part Australian, and part made-up. As one nephew said, my accent was simply "non-American." I thought that summed it up well. In high school, sitting down to take an ACT test raised my blood pressure. This week, doing so was the highlight of my day. Mainly because my nephew invited me to do it with him. . He is preparing for the ACT, and he thought it would be fun if we both took a practice test section together. My answer was a definite “yes!” Sure this week was busy, but there are so many reasons to answer a resounding “yes!” when a nephew or niece or child or grandchild invites us to do something with him or her—whether it’s playing with toys or taking a college entrance exam. 🎒 Most other things can wait or be rearranged with little effect. But think about the effect when we say “yes!” to an invitation to spend time with someone. (Selfishly, I think I’m the one most blessed by each minute spent together!) So if you need a reminder or permission to set aside a task this weekend in order to spend one-on-one time with someone, go for it! ❤️ I’m glad I did. . P.S. It was nice to know that taking an ACT test was easier now than when I took it all those years ago (thank you, college education and lifelong learning). I want to share a final thought on goals as I end this series of games to teach SMART goals. While the SMART goals system is helpful, I've found that goals are much more meaningful when they’re part of a bigger picture. Similar to the “relevant” aspect of SMART goals, when we know WHY we’re working toward a goal, it makes a big difference—and it helps us choose which goals to set. . For me, that bigger “why” has been knowing that my growth can help me become the person my Heavenly Father wants me to be and knows I can become, the person who can contribute to His great work in ways that I can be uniquely prepared for if I let His will prevail in my life. I love a quote from President @RussellMNelson: “Education is the difference between wishing you could help other people and being able to help them.” The more knowledge and skills we learn and the more Christlike traits we develop among the many forms of education we engage in each week, the more we're more able to help other people. Isn’t it a beautiful irony that our greatest growth can come not in seeking to be better for ourselves but in seeking to be better for others? . One final resource I want to share is the personal development booklets in the Children and Youth program (though it’s great for ALL ages) from @churchofjesuschrist, which is the Church I belong to. It invites growth that is balanced in four areas: spiritual, social, physical, and intellectual. Those areas are inspired by four ways in Luke 2:52 that we know Jesus Christ grew and developed. Personally, this approach has been a huge strength to me over many years. . An aspect of Children and Youth that I love is the reminder that Jesus Christ wants us to grow spiritually, socially, physically, and intellectually; He wants us to become like Him, and that requires balanced growth in a variety of ways. This program also talks about the importance of receiving revelation in selecting which goals we set. While I have countless goals I’d like to accomplish, I’m so grateful that the Holy Ghost will help me prioritize the growth that is most important in my life at any given time (see ideas in the booklets). For me, nothing helps me achieve a goal faster than a deadline. Knowing when I need to accomplish something by helps me stay extra focused to make it happen. That’s why the “T” for “time-based” in SMART goals is so important. . To help teach this principle for accomplishing growth through goal setting, try giving your family a fun Minute-to-Win-It–style challenge, such as seeing who can walk 10 feet while balancing an empty paper towel roll on top of a ball on top of a paper towel roll you’re holding. Without a deadline, your family may not get to the challenge right away—or maybe not at all. So after a while, try giving the challenge with a deadline: see if anyone can complete the challenge within 10 minutes. Chances are everyone will be a lot more focused when they have a time-bound aspect to the challenge. . Continuing our SMART goals series of games, "relevant" goals refer to knowing that a goal you set is part of a bigger vision you're working toward. For instance, if you have a goal to learn piano, is it because you want your home filled with music or because you want to create more moments of calmness and reflection in your life? . When we know how a goal fits into our bigger picture of what we want our life to be, it's easier to be able to stay committed to our goal when we're trying to make changes. So helping our families (and ourselves) make sure we are putting efforts into relevant goals is important. . We don’t need to train for a half marathon just because a lot of other people are training for one. We need to discover what development makes the most sense for OUR individual paths. . Today’s activity centers on family conversations about specific topics. It’s a game I created called, “That’s Irrelevant!” (If your children don’t yet know the words “relevant” and “irrelevant,” then this is a great time to introduce some new vocabulary defined in simple terms.) . In this game, each round everyone has a conversation on a topic like oceans, toys, or holidays. (See the link in my bio for FREE printable cards!) Everyone in the group except for one person has a fact related to that topic; the other person has a fact that’s irrelevant to the topic. . To play, start a conversation about the topic, and everyone will try to naturally slip their fact into the conversation; for the person with the irrelevant fact, they’ll need to use some creative talking to make the conversation steer their direction! If someone suspects that the irrelevant fact has been shared, they can call out, “That’s irrelevant!” If they’re right, the group wins! If the person with the irrelevant fact is able to share their fact without anyone noticing how random it is, however, then that person wins that round! . As one of my nephews said when we played, “I love that game because not only is it fun but I also learned lots of cool facts.” . As for me, I love the fact that the game helps them see how much easier it is to focus on goals that are relevant to our larger vision.

Today’s activity is all about the “M” in “SMART” goals: Measurable. . If you saw my stories yesterday, you heard that the way I made one of my physical goals to be healthier more “specific” (the “S” in “SMART” goals) is to learn to tap dance. I figured it would be a way to make exercise even more enjoyable. But “learn to tap dance” doesn’t serve as a great goal because it’s hard to define what success looks like for something that vague. To make it measurable, I decided that I want to learn five tap dances. Knowing what my end goal is helps me identify how to structure my workouts. . Today’s activity is intended to help your family see how making a goal measurable can increase the likelihood of success. And it’s all about building towers. . Start by putting out a few card sets and giving your family the invitation to “try to make the best tower.” They’ll likely start using the cards to build the tallest tower they can. Or maybe others will try to create the largest base and build from there. Either way, everyone will probably soon realize that building a card tower is hard. But the invitation for the activity never said they had to create the tower from cards—the cards were simply the resource that was most readily available. So now invite them to use any materials they want and extend some different invitations, such as: • Build a tower that can hold a book or a favorite toy. • Build a tower that a paper towel roll can fit inside. • Build a tower that has three floors and is at least 1.5 feet tall. . As soon as your family knows how to measure the success of a tower (to hold a book, to surround an object, etc.), then they can decide what design and materials will be best to build their structure. . Of course, that all leads to a quick conversation about making sure our goals have a “measurable” element. . If your family gives this a try, I’d love to see their tower creations! Whether in person or over Zoom, enjoy a Christmas food taste test! On my last trip to the grocery store, I found all the fun Christmas-flavored foods that we'd never tried before. I took a piece (or two or three) of each one and put them into bags labeled with each person's name. I delivered a bag to each extended family member, too! I wanted to switch up this post from my norm to say THANK YOU for being here with me in this lovely Instagram corner of the world. We recently reached a group of 1,000 together on this account. How grateful I am to be together with you on this journey of strengthening families and creating fun memories! Time devoted to family is such a beautiful and important gift. My goal in creating this account was to make it easy for you to create those special moments without needing much prep or expense. I like to choose practical over Pinterest, because I know how busy we all are, and I also know that some of my most treasured family memories are the ones that cost little or nothing. In that regard, my dream is to help busy families spend five minutes of intentional play together every day, to simply laugh and bond together--without making Mom or Dad (or aunt or uncle or Grandma or Grandpa) feel burdened with much prep. With homework and chores and meal prep and errands and varying schedules and all the little things that can crowd out intentional play time, it's not always easy to get everyone together, but you do it! When I thought about making some fun turkey-themed treats for #Thanksgiving, I made a trip to the grocery store and simply walked down the candy aisle. I hoped for just a few ideas but ended up coming up with 10 ideas—10! In just a matter of minutes. . If you think about it, it's pretty amazing how many foods are available at our fingertips (literally at our fingertips with online ordering!). I imagine the food SKUs in a store easily reach over 1,000—maybe thousands? Compare that with how many foods were available to families even 100 years ago. "Did you get the email about our Mayflower ancestor?" It was a text from my sister last week. . I had, in fact, received an email that morning from @familysearch telling me I had an ancestor on the Mayflower, but I hadn't opened it yet because of a day full of meetings. So I called her to get the CliffsNotes version. I never expected to hear the powerful stories she shared with me after the research she had done that morning. Two of my ancestor lines came to America on the Mayflower, and they each had some pretty powerful stories. Each story awoke in me a deep sense of connection to these ancestors and the work that they had done. I felt so strongly what I have known through others' research for many years—that children who know their family stories have increased resilience, purpose, etc. When I read these stories, I felt that. A work of these ancestors has been an important passion of mine, so as soon as I heard what they had done I knew that part of their story lived in me, and it increased my passion even more to carry on their work. It is so powerful how building connections with our ancestors can bless our lives. Today, I give thanks for the ability to read our ancestors stories so easily, for the connection to them we feel when we do that research, and for the lives they lived that laid an important foundation for our wonderful lives today. And I give thanks to the many groups who helped found our nation. #givethanks . When I created this simple game, I titled it “Sliding into Gratitude” because the purpose is to slide a penny from a few feet away and try to get it to land on one of the letters on the paper. If you land on a letter, you have 10 seconds to list as many items as you can that you’re thankful for which start with that letter—you get a point for each one. And while I love that this game provides for quick thinking, grateful focus, and laughter, I’ve realized over the last 24 hours that perhaps I titled it wrong. . Even though the title is a play on words, can we really “slide” into gratitude? If we do, it’s probably not as effective as it could be. Gratitude is a choice. When we choose gratitude intentionally, it brings a great power into our lives—more so than just “sliding” into it. That’s what I’ve felt over the last 24 hours. Yesterday I heard a wonderful short talk by @russellmnelson the president of @ChurchofJesusChrist (I’ll link to the video in my stories and bio). President Nelson spoke of “the healing power of gratitude”—don’t you love that phrase! He talked about how being grateful can help us find joy during these unique times (and always!), as a remedy for our hearts to the pandemic. One of two invitations he suggested was to post something every day on social media about what we are grateful for, using the hashtag #givethanks. If you want to uplift your soul, peruse some of those posts. Doing so in the last 24 hours has been magnificent! My joy has increased immensely (and I was already happy). . So, while this game—which I hope you enjoy with your family—may be titled “Sliding into Gratitude,” may our weeks be filled with intentional gratitude. That—intentional gratitude—is what I am expressing intentional thanks for today, along with being able to read about all the blessings others are posting on social media.
