HOW BONE FORMATION TAKES PLACE IN DOGS ? Also known as ossification, bone formation is a process where new bone is produced. Look at any large breed and it is clear to see how much new bone needs to be produced from birth to full skeletal maturity. Bone starts as a cartilage model which gets slowly replaced. Osteoblasts are the cells that form new bone. They secrete osteoids. Osteoid tissue is simply unmineralised bone tissue. Soon after the osteoid is laid down,inorganic salts are deposited which forms the hardened material that we know as bone. These inorganic salts include calcium and phosphorus. Bone formation proceeds outwards from ossification centres; short bones tend to have one in the middle whereas long bones typically have three, one at each end and one in the middle. Ossification, or bone formation continues until there is a thin strip of cartilage left at each end of the bone. This is known as the epiphyseal plate, or growth plate in the dog world. Do you know someone that is always taking their dog to the vet for chronic... ear infections, allergies or hotspots? Most often, these are a result of certain nutrient deficiencies or excess of carbohydrates. The main reason you may not see improvement from adding these foods is because you haven’t removed goods that are causing inflammation to begin with. The most common culprit is carbs. Carbs include starchy vegetables like pumpkin and squash, and legumes like lentils and chick peas. Let’s talk about fish! Most ratio raw diets will be lacking in essential vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA. These fatty acids have multiple roles for biological function and are required for optimal health. Fish is a wholefood ingredient that can be used to fill this nutritional gap - but not all fish are equally suitable. We are looking for fish that provide sufficient levels of vitamin D and omega 3s, while being low in mercury and optimally - if you plan on feeding them raw - thiaminase-free. To find fish with suitable levels of the fat-soluble vitamin D as well as omega 3 fatty acids, we are looking for fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, sardine, sprat, smelt or rainbow trout. It is recommended to avoid longer-lived larger predatory fish species (higher in the food chain), as they will accumulate higher concentrations of mercury. Selecting small fatty fish lower in the food chain reduces the risk of mercury. Fish very high in mercury are e.g. swordfish or tuna. Another topic is thiaminase, which is an enzyme that breaks down thiamine (vitamin B1). There are several ways of dealing with the thiaminase issue. 1. Feed thiaminase-free fish. Examples are salmon, mackerel, rainbow trout. No thiaminase, no problem. 😌 2. Thaw and feed thiaminase-containing fish like sardine, herring, smelt or sprat separate from the rest of the diet. In a water-based environment, thiaminase breaks down all the thiamine until none is left. If thawed separately and fed as a separate meal (> 30 min apart from other meals), the rest of the diet won’t be affected. 3. Provide thiaminase-containing fish cooked or canned. Thiaminase is not heat-stable. 4. After feeding thiaminase-containing fish, fill up the vitamin B1 gap with the next meal. Providing fatty fish as approx. 5-10% of the diet will suffice to cover the needs of vitamin D and omega 3s. Shellfish like blue mussels and oysters also provide some vitamin D and omega 3s - any shellfish should be provided cooked due to the risk of toxoplasmosis (see also my post on oysters for more details). I recently placed two orders with online suppliers of raw pet food. The first one is the one supplier available to me that sells whole duck frames (ground ones are widely available) - and as I ran out of duck ribs for Luna a while ago, I ordered 5, which will probably bring us over the summer. They will also provide duck kidneys to have some variation for Luna (who only accepts rabbit kidneys and poultry kidneys), some meat and the rest of the frames will be ground up for Pixie. I also ordered whole mackerels there as I am running low, and currently my supermarket doesn’t offer them. Last but not least, I also got beef bone paste, which I will use in recipes for Pixie. The second order has more special items and most of them are for Pixie. I ordered a wild pigeon grind, that includes the whole bird incl. offal, just without the head, feet and feathers. So almost whole prey. 😉 This item has lots of glowing reviews, so I hope, Pixie likes it as well. Also, I ordered ground quails to use for introduction purposes with Pixie - in the long run I would like her to eat them in chunks and chew the bones. But with Pixie it helps if she gets to know the protein first with a familiar texture. I am very excited to receive boneless ground elk meat and boneless ground reindeer meat with this order, which I will combine with a completer. Pixie is very fond of game meats and I believe she will like them very much. To continue the introduction I already started beginning of the year, I also ordered a few packs of ground whole prey mice. This is the only supplier that provides them, so we didn’t have them for a few weeks. And finally, I got some chunky meat as well: horse, which is a staple in both their diets, and another new protein: guanaco (wild llama). Guanaco is considered neutral in TCM, and I will introduce it mainly to Luna to provide a better variety of red meats during the hot summer months. Hot temperatures are especially hard on Luna, and I saw significant improvement when cutting out the ingredients with warming energy during the hot summer months. Last year this resulted in 3.5 months with limited variety - this summer I want to be prepared…

Does general Calcium supplements help out dogs having calcium deficiency in diet ? A most common blunder done by vets is regarding the recommendation of Calcium supplements for dogs. Most of us know that calcium is a mineral that lacks in all unbalanced fresh food diets for dogs Suppose you have a pup who is supposed to eat 1000kcal of food per day. As per NRC guidelines, the pup should be getting minimum of 3000mg Calcium and minimum of 2500mg Phosphorous at a ratio of 1:1 to 2:1 daily Suppose you feed your pup optimum amounts of meat, say chicken breast. Just consider 400gms of chicken is being fed. Then, your pup is getting approx 800mg of phosphorous and 60mg of calcium from meat You go to the vet, the vet gives you a calcium syrup to fulfill the calcium requirement, say Ostopet syrup, 10ml twice daily (Ostopet has been considered since it's considered a quality calcium supplement). Ostopet has 1650mg Ca, 850mg Phosphorous per 100ml. You are giving 20ml daily. That comes down to 330mg Ca, 170mg Phosphorous daily In total, it becomes 60+330=390mg Ca, 800+170=970mg Phosphorous daily The minimum calcium requirement is yet to achieve, and the current value falls short by 2610mg. To get 3000mg Ca, around 190ml of Ostopet has to be fed daily, which is not possible ! 390:970=1:2.5 is the Ca:P ratio in the diet, which is completely opposite of the NRC guideline. The Omega 3 variety @rawperformancedogfood has is fin-tastic! I LOVE adding a source of omega-3 to Louistor's meals. I used to add it only in one of his meals (typically breakfast) but recently with his skin issues I've been adding it to his breakfast and his dinner and have noticed a huge difference in his skin (so have a lot of other people because they always say how soft and shiny his coat is!) Other benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids include - it's great for reducing inflammation and relieving itchy skin. It also aids in providing better nutrient absorption and increases energy. It's an amazing add to the bowl for over all wellness has it helps with heart, eye, brain, joint, muscle, immune and as I mentioned skin health! Talk about a powerhouse supplement! It's important to change up your source of Omega 3's because of the different benefits, vitamins and minerals each fish has. (Each fish has different levels of EPA and DHA) and I also prefer to add whole fish in Louistor's diet compared to oil (but I still had herring oil!) Quercetin (prounced kwer-suh-ten) can be a helpful addition to meals for dogs that struggle with seasonal or environmental allergies (like pollens or dust) that can cause itchy paws, ear problems, watery eyes, and itchy skin. No wonder it’s known as nature’s Benadryl! A naturally occurring polyphenol flavonoid (antioxidant), it has antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties, and helps support the kidneys and liver from oxidative stress/damage. Quercetin can be found in food sources such as apples, blueberries, blackberries, citrus fruit, parsley, green leafy veggies, and broccoli, but you’d have to feed truckloads of these foods to get functional amounts, so it’s best given as a supplement. If possible, choose one that contains bromelain (an enzyme found in pineapple) as it assists with absorption, and avoid Quercetin dihydrate as this is a synthetic source. Dosage is 10mg-20mg per kilo (so a 20kg dog would need 200mg-400mg per day) and best split into two doses daily. As with any new addition, start small and monitor any reaction that may occur. Even though it’s not a magic pill, and may not work for everyone, it is worth a try. Remember to give it a minimum of eight weeks at full dose to see if it helps. A couple of notes ~ 🐶 If your dog has kidney disease check with your vet/nutritionist before adding a quercetin supplement (food sources are fine). 🐶 If your dog is taking a regular medication check with your vet to ensure there’s no contraindication. 🐶The safety of quercetin supplements hasn’t been shown for pregnant/lactating dogs. BLUEBERRIES: THE BRAIN PROTECTOR A major cause of aging and degeneration of all organs is oxidative stress. This is the build up of metabolic byproducts called free radicals. Free radicals are reactive … they quickly build up in large amounts by turning neighbouring molecules into free radicals. This harms cell membranes and even DNA. The result is age-related diseases such as arthritis, kidney disease and even cancer. Your dog’s immune system has no protection against free radicals. The only way to control them is through diet. Nutrients that fight free radical damage, like vitamins C and E, are called antioxidants. No other food scores higher for its antioxidant properties than the blueberry. Blueberries are also well researched for their anti-inflammatory effects on the brain and nervous system. The brain uses more oxygen than any other body tissue … and this makes it especially vulnerable to oxidative stress. Blueberries contain a unique antioxidant called anthocyanin … and they contain more than any other food. Anthocyanins can cross the blood-brain barrier, making blueberries a potent protector of the brain and nervous system. In one study, dogs eating blueberries had lower markers of oxidative stress and a significant reduction of oxidative stress. And in other animal studies, mice eating blueberries were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. HOW TO FEED BLUEBERRIES Since blueberries are food, there’s no “dose” for dogs. You could safely add blueberries as up to 5% of your dog’s diet. If your dog is eating kibble, you’ll want to double that amount. You can also add other berries, including raspberries, cranberries and blackberries. Unlike other fruits, berries are low in sugar and have a low glycemic load. PRO TIP: Make sure your dog’s blueberries are wild and organic. Wild blueberries contain more anthocyanins. Pixie finished her chicken & wild hare & rabbit batch recently, so it was time to whip up a new wild hare batch. While Luna still is not a big fan of wild hare meat (I still offer it regularly to get her used to it, and she eats it with a topper) - Pixie absolutely loves wild hare! I like feeding wild game animals as - due to their free life and natural diet - they have a very good and balanced nutritional profile. Pixie just likes the game-y taste… 😻 I figured it was time for a new combo and created a wild duck & wild hare recipe, that for the first time has diced instead of puréed secreting organs. All ingredients are known, and the texture is overall very similar to what Pixie knows, so I don’t expect any issues with this. Nonetheless, this is an important step in my master plan for Pixie … 😉 This batch makes 23 delicious mixed-texture meals and contains: 🦆 wild duck legs, ground 🐇 rabbit spines, ground 🐇 wild duck meat, chunks/strips 🐰 wild hare meat, chunks/strips 🦆 duck hearts, quartered 🐇 rabbit lungs, small chunks 🦆 duck lungs, small chunks 🐇 rabbit liver, diced 🦆 duck liver, diced 🐇 rabbit kidneys, diced 🐇 rabbit brain, diced 🐇 rabbit suet, diced 🐇 rabbit ears and masks, ground 🦪 oysters 🦪 blue mussels 🐟 rainbow trout paté 🐟 sardines, canned 🩸 dried poultry blood (turkey, duck, chicken) 💊 kelp, taurine, vitamin E, vitamin B complex, salmon oil As both the wild duck meat and the wild hare meat are super lean, I added some rabbit suet into the mix. Suet is the fat capsule around the kidneys. The rabbit kidneys I buy from the rabbit farm always come in their thick suet capsules, which I remove during prep, so I have more than enough rabbit fat to add to batches with very lean ingredients. I also used rabbit organ meats to complete the recipe, and rabbit ears/masks for animal-based fiber. Have you tried wild hare with your cat (and do they like it)?
