Something I have loved so much about having dogs in my life is the way my habits changed as we learned to live and grow together. Living like this has helped me structure my day and my life much more efficiently and intentionally than my life without dogs. Over the years, my dogs and I developed some really great habits together that have served us well. Here are some of our beneficial habits: 🥩 eating nutrient dense / meat based every day 🦴 deck time - kapo chews a bone and I read or just relax 🐾 daily + natural exercise via walks and hikes 💦 only consuming filtered water 🌅 seeing the sunrise / sunset to regulate circadian rhythm 💡 reducing blue light exposure after sunset ❤️‍🩹 exploring natural therapies (chiro, acu, pemf, red light) 🔆 living a chemical free / toxin free lifestyle 🌀 practicing stillness a little every day 💖 spending more time cuddling + allowing affection than stressing or worrying Honestly, I feel like a life with dogs has made me a better, more aware, more balanced and more educated person. Ensuring that Kapo thrives (and my dogs before him) in his life has always caused me to push myself to be better for him. Better diet, better personal care, and better awareness levels. How about you guys? What habits have you enjoyed creating with your dogs? Which habits started with your dogs but ended up being beneficial for you? #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #naturalrearing #holistichealthfordogs #feedraw #rawfeddog #rawfeddogs #rawfeeding #rawdogfooddiet #rawdogfood #speciesappropriaterawdiet #foodismedicine #caninehealth #evolutionarynutrition

Feed real foods and… Ditch: -ultra heated + processed junk food -nutrient deficiencies -chronic inflammation -chronic dehydration -bad breath -joint issues -obesity -chronic gut + skin issues -nutrition-related maladies Our dogs require meat, bones, organs and fat in whole food form. Nutrition is more than just vitamins and minerals on a spreadsheet. Nutrition is more than AAFCO or NRC guidelines. By seeking to understand the evolution of our dogs’ nutritional genome, we can make better choices on what to feed. By comprising their diet mainly of the foods that would’ve been consumed by their wild canid ancestors, we offer them both sustenance + medicinal benefits. Nature already has provided the ideal foods for them in the ideal forms with all necessary vitamins, minerals, enzymes and cofactors included in perfect balance. Feed real. Feed raw. #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #naturalrearing #holistichealthfordogs #feedraw #rawfeddog #rawfeeding #rawdogfooddiet #speciesappropriaterawdiet #foodismedicine #caninehealth #feedreal #evolutionarynutrition

C H I C K E N • F E E T🐓✨ Chicken feet are a great edible bone to include in a dog’s diet. They also make a great treat or base for homemade bone broth. Some of their benefits include: 🦶🏼rich in collagen 🦶🏼natural source of glucosamine 🦶🏼improved mobility + joint health 🦶🏼beneficial to skin, fur and nails 🦶🏼source of vitamins + minerals 🦶🏼easy to source / grind Generally, chicken feet are relatively inexpensive and can be found at most grocery stores as well as Asian markets. Should you feed them whole, they make a fun snack and a natural toothbrush. Feeding whole feet regularly can improve breath and overall dental health. It is safe to feed the feet with the nails still on, they won’t hurt or scratch the GI tract. Chicken feet are rich with collagen, a main protein in our dogs’ bodies. Collagen is great for skin, joints and bones. It helps prevent aging, aids with mobility and works to prevent bone loss. So whether your dog is a pup or a senior, chicken feet can benefit them. Chicken feet are a great source of natural glucosamine. Glucosamine is made up of glucose (sugar) + glutamine (an amino acid). Glucosamine is naturally produced in the body and helps to form the cartilage in joints. As our dogs age, glucosamine production reduces, causing stiffness, less shock absorption and potential joint pain. By feeding bioavailable sources of glucosamine aka chicken feet, we can help our dogs maintain flexibility and mobility. Dogs need roughly 500mg of glucosamine per day per 25lbs of body weight. One chicken foot is about 400 mg of glucosamine. If you make your own broths, chicken feet are a must for super wiggly jiggly bone broth due to their high collagen content. Does your dog like chicken feet? Kapo is a big fan! #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #naturalrearing #holistichealthfordogs #feedraw #rawfeddog #rawfeddogs #rawfeeding #rawdogfooddiet #rawdogfood #speciesappropriaterawdiet #foodismedicine #chickenfeet #caninehealth #evolutionarynutrition

Species appropriate nutrition + low toxin lifestyle = optimal health and longevity. That should be obvious to any ‘educated’ person in the canine veterinary industry but the opposite is the reality. Dog got an ear infection? As a pet parent you are offered:💊antibiotics (because why not?) 💊inconclusive allergy tests 💊overly processed and costly ‘prescription food’ 💊another round of vaccines (since you’re here) For illness to recede and symtoms to wane, we need to be getting to the root cause of the issue. For most dogs and symptoms, it’s lack of nutrition coupled with a high toxic burden. Instead the current course of action is to suppress symptoms, dehydrate the body via prescription food, deny the body of bioavailable nutrients and create immune confusion. We can and should be doing better for our dogs. Seek out veterinary care providers that explore the root cause of illness before medicating and injecting blindly. Like and share if you agree!✌🏼❤️🐕 #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #naturalrearing #holistichealthfordogs #feedraw #rawfeeding #speciesappropriate #foodismedicine #caninehealth #evolutionarynutrition #drchristianenorthup

{CHICKEN TIME} Time for another Kapo update! We’ve been living on the regenerative farm for a few months now. Each day is full of activity and hard work, but also plenty of enjoyment. Kapo’s crossed the 10 month mark (slow down pls!) and his weight seems to be stable around 17.5lbs. He eats about 8-9oz a day. Most days we manage to get three good walks around the farm and he seems satisfied with that routine. He’s turning into a really great farm pug. He’s learning his offleash manners and learning to respect the farm workers as they come and go. He’s also learning to be a good boy in the truck during deliveries. I’m most proud of him learning to be calm and confident around the chickens and cattle. Kapo recently got to get up close and personal with the hens. He surprised us by not losing his sh!t and mostly just watched and sniffed them. He now understands those strange smells on his daddy’s boots.🐓💩😂 #rawplusrewild #rawfedpug #puglife #farmlife #kapoblue #pug #pugsofinstagram

Ultra processed + ultra heated dog food offers your dog a daily dose of dehydration, denatured proteins, aflatoxins, rancid fats, storage mites, glyphosate laden starches, unlisted palatants, maillard reaction products and synthetic vitamins and minerals. If that toxic burden wasn’t enough, add in: +daily exposure to toxic fragrances, dyes + cleaners +daily ingestion of microplastics through shelf stable ‘bones’ +daily exposure to chemical laden tap water +daily exposure to glyphosate treated grass +monthly exposure to ‘preventative’ pesticides +yearly exposure to toxic heavy metals, adjuvants, and foreign proteins It is any surprise the dog population is so sick? It is any surprise that the 1 in 2 dogs will develop cancer? Is it any surprise that we’re now seeing cancer regularly in dogs under 2 years old? Is it any surprise most dogs have IBS, SIBO, GERD, leaky gut or other chronic GI issues? What IS surprising to me is how fearful and resistant pet parents can be to offering their dog a life WITHOUT chemicals. A life where each meal is a fresh, hydrating bowl of raw meaty bones and organs full of bioavailable nutrients. Now combine that with: +non toxic, unscented + often homemade cleaners +real bones full of necessary minerals +filtered, spring or structured water +daily walks/exercise on untreated dirt + grass +regular use of herbal pest control options +understanding terrain theory vs germ theory You do the math. Is your dog’s lifestyle likely to add up to health or disease? #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #caninehealthandwellness #rawfeeding #rawfeddogs #naturalrearing #toxicload #foodismedicine #holistichealthfordogs #speciesappropriate

P A S T U R E • E G G S 🪺 Since moving to a regenerative farm, I have such an appreciation for pasture eggs, both for myself and Kapo. Here at the farm, the chickens are free to roam, peck and forage in the pastures all day long. They also act as a clean up crew, following the cows from paddock to paddock. After the herd of cattle are done grazing and move to a new paddock, the chickens follow in mobile coops to feast on worms, insects and whatever delectables they find in the manure. The chickens also feast on things that would normally go to waste like carrot tops, beet greens and eggs not suitable for selling. Yup, they love eating their own eggs!! Pasture eggs are a great source of nutrition for our dogs. They’re full of bioavailable protein, healthy fats and also contain vitamins A, E, B12, folate, choline, iron, riboflavin, selenium and calcium (shells). They also contain two antioxidants—lutein and zeaxanthin. Eggs are important for supplying essential aminos and fatty acids, improving skin and coat health, and building strong bones and teeth. By providing pasture to the hens, these eggs will have a lower Omega 6:3 ratio, with higher amounts of vitamins A and E compared to confined hens. Because the shells are just washed with water, pasture eggs are safe to feed shell and all. Both Kapo and I agree, they look and taste better than store-bought eggs. Whenever possible look for pasture eggs at your local farmer’s market…the increased nutrient density is worth the higher price. An egg a day helps keep the vet away! #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #naturalrearing #holistichealthfordogs #feedraw #rawfeddog #rawfeddogs #rawfeeding #rawdogfooddiet #rawdogfood #speciesappropriaterawdiet #foodismedicine #mealprep #caninehealth #realdogfood #evolutionarynutrition #raweggsfordogs #eggsfordogs

{LIFE UPDATE} You can take the girl out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the girl! Recently our little family decided to leave the city we have enjoyed for the last 15 years and return to our roots. We moved out to rural Texas onto a small regenerative farm, about 170 acres. Our days are now filled with tending to pasture-raised chickens and grass-fed cattle. And we absolutely love it! Fresh air, blue skies for miles and most of all, quiet. Austin is not the loudest city by any means, but we longed for the serenity of the country over the hum of the highways near our home in the city. Kapo absolutely loves farm life. His feet are on clean, healthy dirt and grass every day instead of glyphosate-sprayed parks and concrete sidewalks. Kapo is now 8 months old and growing into a strong and sturdy pug. He loves all the free eggs he gets from the chickens. He also loves the farm trails and all the smells wafting through the country air. We have two exciting raw projects happening on the farm that we hope to unveil by summer so stay tuned for more info! See our stories today for a sneak peak and prepare for lots of farm content! #rawplusrewild #puglife #regenerativefarming #raw

All dogs benefit from a species appropriate diet, continually cleared/open detox pathways, a healthy mucosal lining with tight junctions, a gut full of beneficial bacteria, a functioning lymphatic system, and adequately cleansed, purified and oxygenated blood. Not only do we need to put IN the right foods to achieve this, but more importantly we need to be aware of what to leave OUT, such as: heavy metals, toxic herbicides and pesticides, glyphosate, adjuvants, synthetic food ingredients, palatants, preservatives, additives and many other common toxins hidden in commercial dog food, vaccines and pest prevention products. Canine immunity, true-down-to-the-cellular-level health, is more about providing optimal nutrition, clean water, sunshine, exercise, as toxin free lifestyle as possible and then stepping out of the way and letting our dogs’ bodies tap into their natural abilities to heal, replenish, repair and rejuvenate. Forget germs. Focus on terrain. Feed raw.🐕🥩 #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #naturalrearing #holistichealthfordogs #feedraw #rawfeddog #rawfeddogs #rawfeeding #rawdogfooddiet #rawdogfood #speciesappropriaterawdiet #foodismedicine #caninehealth #realdogfood #evolutionarynutrition #focusontheterrain

🌿A L F A L F A🌿 Alfalfa {Medicago sativa} is often renowned as the ‘king of the herbs’ for its wide range of nutritive benefits. It’s a member of the Pea family, grows easily and vigorously if not maintained, and is often used for animal grazing and feed. Alfalfa contains considerable amounts of proteins, vitamins, minerals and trace minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, selenium, iron, B vitamins and zinc. It is a rich source of chlorophyll and helps to purify the blood. Alfalfa is a powerful anti inflammatory and can have a significant effect on those suffering from arthritis. Whether used alone or combined with dandelion, licorice and yucca, alfalfa is one of the best herbal treatments for arthritis. Alfalfa also serves as a kidney supporter by acting as a diuretic, which can help treat overly acidic urine and other issues associated bladder inflammation. This nutritive herb contains saponins which help with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients in the small intestine and can be useful for dogs who need to gain weight or are adjusting to a dietary change. Lastly, alfalfa works with the liver and small intestine to inactivate and rid the body of potentially cancerous growths, making it very applicable in cancer prevention. Alfalfa is a highly genetically modified crop so be sure to source organically. Avoid alfalfa seeds. I source mine from @mountainroseherbs Dried alfalfa can be sprinkled over food using a pinch per 10lbs body weight once a day. A 50lb dog’s dosage is about 1 tsp of dried alfalfa per day. Use caution with anemic dogs. Have you tried alfalfa with your dog? I love it for its trace minerals and chlorophyll content not to mention the other powerful phytonutrients. #rawplusrewild #alfalfa #canineherbalism #caninenutrition #herbalsupport #medicagosativa #rawfeeding #naturalrearing #foodismedicine #caninehealth #evolutionarynutrition #holistichealthfordogs #rawdogfood #rawfeddog #herbsforpets #herbsfordogs

K A P O’s • F I R S T • M E A L 🥩 max’s meat mash up @sadiesselectpetfood 🥛 raw goat milk This was Kapo’s first meal after picking him up from the breeder at 9 weeks old. It’s 3.5 oz of max’s meat mash up and .5oz goat milk. One of three meals per day at the time. He was 4.5lbs when we picked him up. The breeder and I had discussed how best to wean him directly to raw (around 5-6 weeks) and we eventually decided to go with @sadiesselectpetfood I chose this food for a few reasons: 🐂 high quality sourcing practices 🥩 variety of proteins 🔪 finely ground, perfect for a weaning pup 🤲🏼 hand crafted in small batches 📦 ships nationwide, 15lb minimum @sadiesselectpetfood was an ideal choice as it allowed me to ship the food to Kapo’s breeder for her to slowly wean him onto a finely ground nutrient dense food. The food itself is packaged in slim packages which made it easy for his breeder to store it in her freezer, and it made it easy on me to feed him while traveling out of state to pick him up and take him home. He’s had fully formed stools since day one of being home and that in large part is due to his healthy diet and natural rearing. Once Kapo was home and I got to know him a bit, I began prepping his food myself just in time for a big growth spurt at 12 weeks old. If you are looking for a great starter food for your pup or full grown dog, @sadiesselectpetfood is a great choice. The care and knowledge that goes into each package is evident in your dog’s satisfied face after each meal. @sadiesselectpetfood is truly made with love! 💯💯💯 Wise words from Dr. Jeannie Thomason, my first mentor and canine naturopath on my raw journey nearly 16 years ago. She wrote a great book on natural rearing, having holistically raised and successfully shown Standard poodles and Boston terriers for many years. She was an amazing proponent of a prey model raw diet and advocate for holistic canine health. Her body of work is worth checking out if you’re into natural rearing. My best decisions for my dogs have been feeding a home made, varied and rotating raw diet; opting OUT of conventional methods of pest control, deworming and vaccinations; and spending hours outside together each day on hiking trails. What goes in, can’t always be detoxed out so be mindful of what goes into your dog’s body so that they have the best chance of reaching their full potential and living their longest, happiest and healthiest life! #rawplusrewild #caninenutrition #foodismedicine #naturalrearing #holistichealthfordogs #feedraw #rawfeddog #rawfeddogs #rawfeeding #rawdogfooddiet #rawdogfood #speciesappropriaterawdiet

Meet Kapo, the newest member to my family. I love him so much and am completely obsessed! He’s so smart, strong and downright hilarious at times. He’s fearless and confident and loves exploring the trails with me. Kapo’s naturally reared and went fully raw after weaning around 5-6 weeks. He’s now a little over 5 months. His name is based off the word ‘capo’, which is a little tool my husband will use when playing his guitar and he wants to change the key. To me as a listener, a capo changes everything about the original experience. Our life has changed so much over the past few years (losing 4 dogs in 4 years) and instead of fighting or resisting these changes that are inevitable at times (they all had wonderfully long lives), we’re learning to embrace change and flow with it. Kapo’s name is inspired by that. Kapo’s already brought us a much welcomed change of pace in the house. He gives us so much joy and we can’t wait to give him everything this world has to offer a dog. #repost @rawplusrewild B E E F • T O N G U E 🔪👅 tongue is a great option to add into your raw dog’s weekly menu! i’m not gonna lie, it took a little while for me to even touch tongue without gloves on, but i’m glad i eventually got over that because it is so nutritious and delicious (according to my dogs). depending on who you talk to, some consider it an organ and some consider it a muscle. however for raw feeders, it’s considered a muscle meat. tongue meat is dense with calories, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. some of which include zinc, iron, choline and B vitamins. it’s on the fattier side, with protein and fat being in a 1:1 ratio. depending on where you source, it can be really affordable or quite expensive. we source ours from granny’s grass fed beef in la grange, tx. because of its specific nutrient profile, tongue is great for dogs recovering from injuries, pregnant and lactating dogs, and highly active dogs that may benefit from extra fat in their diet. do you feed tongue? which kind does your dog prefer? share your experiences and your favorite ways to source it below⬇️ 🐺kristen🐺 #rawplusrewild #rawfeddogs #rawfed #rawfeedingcommunity #rawdogs #rawpetfood #rawdogfood #petfood #petnutrition #dogfood #dognutrition #pethealth #freshfood #feedfresh #feedraw #nutrition #carnivore #dogsarecarnivores #carnivorediet #caninenutrition #speciesappropriate #wildfoods #naturaldogcare #beeftongue #tongue #rawfeedinguniversity #foodismedicine #wellnesswednesday 📸 by @dianamlottphotography

repost @rawplusrewild T E S T I C L E S🐐🍒 Testicles or testes are male reproductive organs. They are better known by their colorfully misleading pseudonyms such as: rocky mountain oysters, lamb fries, or bovine eggs. Testes are high in protein boasting 26g per 100g. They are also low in fat, a mere 3g for every 100g. Testicles contain a decent array of B vitamins as well, with particularly high amounts of B12. They contain a fair amount of minerals including: potassium and sodium (regulate fluid balance), iron (transports oxygen throughout body), and magnesium (maintains nerve and muscle function). Testes contain high levels of phosphorus which is necessary for strong bones and teeth as well as maintaining a healthy metabolism and energy levels. Interestingly, rocky mountain oysters are also a source of zinc, a vital mineral known for bolstering the immune system, maintaining skin health and healing wounds, and also commonly deficient in raw diets. Another food high in zinc…regular old oysters. Coincidence?🤔 For raw feeders, testicles fall into the ‘other secreting organ’ category, separate from liver, and should be fed at 5% and as part of a varied rotation. When sourcing, they should be white to pink in color with bright streaks, elastic to the touch and without smell. repost @rawplusrewild E Y E B A L L S 🐮👁 Eyes are a great muscular organ to feed your pet carnivores. They contain high concentrations of DHA, an omega 3 which is known to support the brain, eyes and nervous system. Eyes, particularly the retina and tissues in back of the eye, are a rich source of vitamin A. So feeding eyes with regularity can support and contribute to optimal vision. Eyes are also a decent source of zinc, a nutrient which is commonly deficient in our dogs’ diets. Additionally, they also contain some magnesium, another nutrient that is often deficient in both raw and kibble diets. Lastly, eyes contain two potent antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin, both of which protect and nourish eyes and stave off cataracts, macular degeneration and other age-related eye issues. Some raw feeders classify eyes as ‘secreting organs’ which is technically ok, however relying on eyes as a secreting organ too often can open up a diet to deficiency. I personally feed eyeballs like gizzards or lung and other muscular organs and include them sporadically in the diet at about 5%. They make for intriguing snacks or fun additions to a raw bowl, especially this spooky time of year. Does your pooch enjoy eyeballs as a part of their diet? #rawplusrewild #rawfeddogs #rawfed #rawfeedingcommunity #rawdogs #rawpetfood #rawdogfood #petfood #petnutrition #dogfood #dognutrition #pethealth #freshfood #feedfresh #feedraw #nutrition #carnivore #dogsarecarnivores #carnivorediet #caninenutrition #speciesappropriate #wildfoods #naturaldogcare #beefeyeball #rawdogdiet #foodismedicine #eyeballs #feedrealfood #rawdiet #wellnesswednesday 📸: @dianamlottphotography

When it comes to raw feeding, the ability to have an open mind is an incredibly important factor. Each dog is an individual with individual nutritional requirements. Each cow, chicken, goat, etc offers an individual nutrient profile. Each part or ‘cut’ of an animal comes with its own unique profile as well. Beef liver will offer a completely different combination of nutrients than pork muscle meat and chicken wings. Nutrients also vary depending on the animal’s age, diet, stress level, exposure to sunlight, water source and the ability to naturally move and forage. This can overwhelm pet parents who are new to raw and looking for guidance on how to get started. Pet parents can often get attached to detailed spreadsheets, downloaded from random nutritional websites, thinking all they need to do is follow the spreadsheet and healthy nutrition will be the result. These options can be a great way to start, but one thing to always keep in mind is good nutrition is individual to each dog. Each dog will require a slightly different diet and nutrient profile based on their age, size, exercise level, breed and other differentiating factors. Some dogs do amazing with a high bone content, while other dogs do better with extra organs. Some do better with no veg, while others benefit from a small percentage of fruit and veggies. I say this often, but it’s worth repeating. How I fed my dogs at the start of my raw feeding journey 16 years ago is much different from how I feed my dogs now. In all that time, their diets evolved because their needs evolved. They grew, trained, played, worked and exercised differently during different periods in their life. Also in that time, I continued to learn and dive deeper and deeper into natural rearing and canine nutrition, evolving to feed pastured meats over commercial options, providing a variety of organs, and adding in more proteins as well as therapeutic herbs and mushrooms. While it is necessary to understand the basic principles and guidelines for a natural diet, the most important factor is how your dog handles the diet and your ability to adjust and evolve. Feed the dog in front of you!🐕❤️

C A L E N D U L A 🌼 Marigold / Calendula Officinalis With calendula, only the flower is used. It has warm energetics and stimulates the liver making it useful in remedies for cool to cold dogs. Calendula has anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti tumor, anti inflammatory and anti spasmodic properties. Calendula stimulates the lymphatic system, reduces inflammation and soothes intestinal lining and mucus membranes. It opens the channels of elimination to remove excess moisture and stimulate lymph flow. It helps to push through stagnation in the lymph system and warm up tissues by increasing circulation. Calendula soothes the gut lining as well as inflamed respiratory and urinary tracts. It can be helpful with leaky gut due to its high polysaccharide content. It can be effective at helping with skin related issues like dermatitis, wounds, burns, flea allergies, mange and inflamed skin due to allergies. Calendula also promotes menstruation in females and should be avoided with pregnant and lactating dogs. Calendula can be used in dry form, hot infusions, and tinctures. Our dogs’ most powerful and frequently administered medicine should be their food. Our dogs’ diet should be naturally nourishing, hydrating and anti inflammatory. Good nutrition means offering a variety of healthy meats, bones, and organs in appropriate portions so that our dogs have a steady flow of bioavailable nutrients that become the building blocks of their health. Dogs assimilate nutrients better when they are offered raw, with their own built in enzymes and cofactors. When a dog’s body is readily offered a species appropriate diet, it spends much less energy on digestion and can focus more on fighting off pathogens, keeping detox pathways open, and healing and replenishing where necessary. When a dog’s body is bogged down by a non species appropriate food like kibble, inflammation and dehydration become chronic, detoxing is backlogged and toxins get stored in lymphs, organs and tissues. Less focus and energy can be given to fighting bacteria and pathogens and the microbiome can shift into an unbalanced state. A dog’s diet should work with their body not against it. If we want them healthy, we have to feed them healthy, fresh foods in the form most suited for effective digestion. Don’t fight nature, it only feeds the diseases. Feed raw. 🐕♥️🥩 #ditchthekibble #rawplusrewild #theartofdogs #perfectlyrawsome #rawfeeding #rawfeddog #rawdogfood #dogfood #caninenutrition #diyrawfeeding #homemadedogfood #rawdiet #feedraw #dogsarecarnivores #caninehealth #speciesappropriate #petfood #petnutrition #freshfood #whatsinmybowl #rawfeedingcommunity #carnivorediet #feedrealfood #realdogfood #foodmatters #foodismedicine #linuspauling

🌿N E T T L E S🌿 Nettle {urtica dioca} is a nutritive herb that also goes by the name Stinging Nettle and Nettle Leaf. Foraging animals benefit greatly from this wild spring herb and its benefits extend to our dogs too. Nettles are high in protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, selenium, phosphorus, potassium, trace minerals and vitamins A and C. Young nettles are particularly high in minerals. Nettles contain large amounts of flavonoids and chlorophyll, which support and improve blood and circulation. Some additional medicinal properties include: 🔹natural antihistamine, useful for allergies 🔹astringent 🔹blood cleanser 🔹helps with mineral deficiencies 🔹diuretic, kidney supportive 🔹detoxification, liver supportive 🔹moves stagnant energy, lymphatic supportive 🔹iron rich, helps with anemia 🔹reduces inflammation of skin, eyes and mucous membranes Nettle is rich in nutrients that are needed for joint repair along with diuretic activities that help remove metabolic wastes that accumulate in the body from chronic inflammation, making it useful for dissolving the build up of uric acid crystals associated with rheumatism (arthritis). Nettle, in dried form, can be added to your dog’s food at the rate of 1/2 tsp for each pound of food fed. Nettle leaf tea can be made by steeping 1 TBSP of dried nettle in 4-6 oz of almost boiling water for 45 minutes. Once cooled, this tea can be poured over food. You can double the recipe to make a great skin and coat rinse (once cooled) for dogs seeking relief from seasonal allergies or flea bites. Kibbe enjoys nettles periodically in both dry form and via teas. Great for her old joints and cleansing her blood. The extra trace minerals don’t hurt either. D U C K • H E A R T S🦆🫀 Duck hearts are loaded with a variety of nutrients and make a great snack and addition to a raw diet. Despite being an organ, duck hearts fall into the muscle meat category of a raw diet. They contain high amounts of vitamins A, C, B12, niacin and folate. These little hearts also contain fair amounts of phosphorus, potassium and selenium. Ducks, and other birds like turkeys and chickens, have higher heartbeat rates than other animals such as dogs or cows. This higher rate of heart function means a higher concentration of taurine, an amino acid necessary for cardiac function and heart health. Recent studies indicate there is a distinct correlation between how fast the heart beats and how much taurine will be concentrated in the heart tissue. Just to compare, a turkey heart beats 298 - 309 beats/minute. A duck heart beats 180 - 340, chicken is 250 - 300, a dog is 70 - 120, and a cow is 48 - 84 beats/minute. So feeding poultry hearts regularly, particularly wild or pasture raised poultry hearts, will ensure adequate taurine in the diet. I source my duck hearts from: 📍@rawfeedingmiami (pictured) 📍@whiteoakpastures 📍local Asian markets One other useful aspect of duck hearts is they make great pill pockets. You can slip your dog’s medication or supplement down into an open ventricle or slice an opening down the side to slip a pill inside and your pooch is none the wiser. Reposting@rawplusrewild The best protection from worms and parasites is a strong immune system supported by a healthy diet. A strong, diverse ecosystem will attack and eliminate worms and keep parasite populations in balance. Your dog’s first line of defense against pests of any kind is a species appropriate raw diet. Diet combined with a chemical free lifestyle will create an environment in your pet that is unsuitable for worm infestations. Healthy dogs are not susceptible to worms but puppies, older dogs and immune compromised dogs can require extra steps to ensure worm populations remain in balance. It’s natural for some worms and parasites to exist in us and our dogs. Problems occur when a dog’s immune system cannot keep the parasites under control and they begin to infest and overpopulate within the intestinal tract, stomach, lungs and heart. If your dog has worms, it’s not so much a worm problem but more of an immune system issue. To target the root issue, seek out healthy immune boosting herbs and anthelmintic foods before using harsh chemicals. Below are some foods that help support the natural elimination of worms in dogs: ▪️pumpkin seeds, fermented + pureed ▪️organic garlic cloves ▪️fresh thyme, fennel, parsley ▪️apple cider vinegar ▪️chamomile tea ▪️carrots + cucumber, grated ▪️fermented veggies ▪️olive leaf ▪️oregon grape ▪️black cumin seed** ▪️black walnut** ▪️wormwood** **should only be used under the guidance of a canine herbalist, canine nutritionist or holistic vet as they can be toxic if used incorrectly. Annual fecal testing is important to not only rule out worm infestations but if there are worms present, it’s important to know the type before starting a holistic approach to expelling them. Personally I like adding pumpkin seeds, fresh herbs, garlic, fermented veggies and chamomile tea regularly in Kibbe’s diet to combat worm infestations now that she’s in her golden years. What do y’all do to prevent and combat worms with your dogs? #rawplusrewild #naturaldewormer #naturalewormerfordogs #rawfeeding #rawfeddog #rawdogfood #naturalpestcontrol #caninenutrition #caninehealth #speciesappropriate #petnutrition #rawfeedingcommunity #foodismedicine

D U L S E 🌊🥓 Dulse is a seaweed that grows attached to rocks on both sides of the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific coasts. It’s also known as red lettuce, red seaweed and sea parsley. It has a bacon-like flavor. Sea veggies, like dulse and kelp, are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Dulse contains: ▫️vitamins A, B6, B12, E, C, K ▫️potassium, calcium, magnesium ▫️manganese, phosphorus, chromium ▫️zinc, iron ▫️chlorophyll ▫️protein ▫️omega 3 fatty acids ▫️dietary fiber ▫️iodine The main reason though most raw feeders incorporate dulse into their dog’s bowl is for the iodine content. The natural iodine in dulse supports thyroid function and hormone production/regulation. Dulse also binds with heavy metals like mercury, lead, aluminum, copper, cadmium and nickel and holds on to them until elimination. Great for use post-vaccination or if your dog is exposed to heavy metals through tap water or their environment. Dulse also supports: ▫️heart health ▫️endocrine glands ▫️gut health + digestion ▫️skin and coat health ▫️increased energy levels Have you ever added dulse to your dog’s meal? #rawplusrewild #superfoods #rawfeeding #rawfeddog #rawdogfood #dogfood #caninenutrition #diyrawfeeding #rawdiet #feedraw #caninehealth #speciesappropriate #petfood #petnutrition #ditchthekibble #freshfood #whatsinmybowl #dulse #rawfeedingcommunity #feedrealfood #realdogfood #foodismedicine

Flea, tick and heartworm season has almost arrived here in Texas and this quote by @odettesuterdvm couldn’t be more apt. One of the simplest ways to avoid toxins going into your pet is to avoid conventional monthly pest ‘preventatives’. Using quotes around preventatives is intended and appropriate. These drugs peddled to you by Dr. Whitecoat don’t prevent pests from being attracted to or biting your pet. They work by circulating enough of a dose of pesticide in your pet’s blood that if bitten, the pest will ingest the poisoned blood and return to the other pests to die or continue to sterilize the colony. And that poison circulates throughout your dog’s blood for an entire month on the off chance they’ll encounter a pest. Meanwhile your dog carries an increased toxin load their entire life, taxing their organs, increasing aging and potential free radicals, and lowering their immunity. Furthermore, because of the incessant use of these drugs, the pests are becoming stronger and more resistant. So the veterinary pharmaceutical industry responds with even stronger toxins.🤦🏻‍♀️ Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparico, Credelio and Revolution Plus all belong to a class of drugs called Isoxazolines, which come with a concerning list of adverse reactions including seizures, aggression, organ failure, vomiting, diarrhea, internal bleeding, coma and death.☠️ Instead of choosing these neurotoxins and putting your dog at risk, choose a multilayering approach to natural pest control. Some options I have included in Kibbe’s natural pest prevention regime over the years are: ◽️Bug Off by @wildlyblended ◽️Fresh chopped garlic regularly offered ◽️Homemade Essential Oil Sprays ◽️Ledum Palustre 30c (for tick bites) ◽️Raw Amber Necklaces ◽️Fermented Pumpkin Seeds ◽️Herbs + anthelmintic herbal infusions ◽️Regular brushing especially after hikes ◽️Clean Heart @ambernaturalz ◽️HW Protect @onlynaturalpet ◽️Nematodes for the yard ◽️Garlique Barrier Spray for yard ◽️Diatomaceous Earth (not a fan) Which natural methods for pest prevention have worked for you and your dog?🐕💚 #rawplusrewild #toxinfreeliving #caninehealth #naturalpestcontrol

🌹R O S E H I P S🌹 Rosehips are round, reddish berries that appear in late summer or early autumn after rose petals fall from their stems. Most often, rosehips are harvested from the aptly named Rosa Canina variety, aka the Dog Rose. “Dogs may forage for them during autumn months, a time when they would be selecting nutrients to help strengthen their immune system for the coming winter.” @caroline_ingraham Known as one of the most concentrated sources of vitamin C, rosehips also contain vitamins A, Bs and K; as well as iron, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Rosehips are useful to dogs who: 🥀need immune support 🥀are fighting infection 🥀are dealing with ailments related to the female reproductive system 🥀suffer from seizures 🥀suffer from arthritis While I do love the rich vitamin C content, I give my dog Kibbe rosehips because they help with collagen repair. Rosehips have regenerative and restorative properties that can be beneficial for dogs suffering from an injury or arthritis. For fastest absorption to the blood, it’s recommended to grind rosehips at the time of feeding. Grinding too far in advance will reduce the medicinal/nutrient value as well as overall shelf life. Dried + ground rosehips can be given at the rate of 1/2 to 1 tsp rosehips per cup of food. I source organic rosehips from @mountainroseherbs For some dogs, rosehips tart flavor can cause stomach upset so go slow and gradually increase the amount given. O X T A I L 🐂🥩 Oxtail is the cross-cut sections of beef or veal tail. Once cut, the pieces of oxtail vary in size, narrowing toward the end. Oxtail consists largely of collagen as well as edible bone, fat, cartilage, connective tissue and protein. The cartilage laden interior of the oxtail is high in fat. This rich fat makes for a great source of energy and helps to boost the production of oil through the sebaceous gland, which in turn improves the shine and fullness of your dog’s hair and coat. In addition to healthy protein and fat, oxtail contains B vitamins, iron, calcium, phosphorus and zinc (a mineral that can often be deficient in raw diets). Gnawing on oxtail is an enriching physical and mental workout for your dog. Mine are always exhausted afterwards! It is a great bone choice for cleaning teeth. The sinew-y pieces can act like floss and the harder pieces help to reduce plaque. 🚨Before feeding, consider if oxtail is appropriate for your dog’s jaw size and chew style. Choking or swallowing whole pieces can be a concern. Smaller breeds should avoid in most cases due to choke hazard. All that being said, my small pugs loved oxtail, as well as my medium sized Kibbe girl and our larger staffie. They all did fine with appropriately sized pieces. Use your best judgement for your individual dog. Oxtail also makes a great addition to homemade bone broths if you want the benefits but don’t feel like it’s an appropriate raw meaty bone for your dog. Nutrition isn’t just nutrients on a label. Source matters, portion matters, form matters. Complacency and trust shouldn’t be gained from colorful packaging. What is being called ‘complete and balanced’ often lacks whole food nutrition, hydration, high bioavailability, live enzymes, appropriate probiotics + prebiotics, purifying antioxidants and real vitamins and minerals. More and more pet parents are realizing the basic importance of feeding a raw, biologically appropriate diet compromised of meat, bones, organs and a small amount of fruit, veg and seeds. But if we try to use the standards for kibble and apply them to raw, things can get confusing and overwhelming. In some ways, it’s like comparing apples to oranges. When preparing a DIY raw diet, nutrient guidelines are a great place to start but it shouldn’t end there. While certain benchmarks are important to achieve balance with a raw diet, our focus (in my opinion) should be on feeding a rotating variety of high quality, lean, pastured poultry, rabbit and ruminants, providing omega 3 rich fish, reducing as many chemicals and toxins in the environment as possible, and observing the individual dog (or cat) in front of us to make necessary adjustments to protein types, portion sizes, bone content, and fiber levels. Don’t let the perceived complexity of a raw, fresh food diet overwhelm you. Start with commercial raw, premades, 80/10/10s, and work with a nutritionist @perfectlyrawsome too while you learn the basics. Eventually you’ll feel comfortable taking the reins and trusting your ability to provide appropriate raw nutrition for your pet. Normalize feeding biologically appropriate, raw, fresh food to our best friends! #rawplusrewild #completeandbalanced #perfectlyrawsome #rawfeedinguniversity #rawfeeding #rawfeddog #rawdogfood #dogfood #caninenutrition #diyrawfeeding #homemadedogfood #rawdiet #feedraw #dogsarecarnivores #caninehealth #speciesappropriate #petfood #petnutrition #ditchthekibble #freshfood #rawfeedingcommunity #carnivorediet #feedrealfood #realdogfood #rawpetsthrive #foodismedicine

W H E A T G R A S S🌾✨ Wheatgrass is a nutritious superfood comprised of freshly sprouted shoots of wheat that can then be ground into powder form. It has notable antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti cancer properties. Wheatgrass powder contains iron, calcium, magnesium, chlorophyll, enzymes, phytonutrients, 17 amino acids and vitamins A, C, E, K and B complex. Research shows wheatgrass helps purify and eliminate toxins stored within the body resulting in higher energy levels and better overall health. Enzymes contained within wheatgrass can aid with nutrient breakdown and proper absorption. Wheatgrass can help boost metabolism as well as the immune system with its high nutrient density and antioxidant levels. It has neuro-protective effects which may improve and support healthy cognitive function as well as prevent memory loss. The anti-inflammatory properties from chlorophyll can help support dogs suffering from arthritis or joint pain/stiffness. Wheatgrass is helpful in fighting cancer too. Studies show wheatgrass can help decrease the spread of certain cancers, induce cancer cell death and reduce oxidative damage. Its high antioxidant content may help to prevent cancer development. Whether you grow fresh wheatgrass, source powdered (@mountainroseherbs) or share some wheatgrass juice with your cat or dog, a little goes a long way. It’s highly nourishing, nutrient dense and because of its purifying properties, starting with a small dose is recommended to see how your pet responds. **Avoid in dogs allergic to wheat or grass. I love the properties in wheatgrass that help support my senior dog’s mobility and cognition as well as boost her immune system and support healthy digestion. Does your dog or cat enjoy wheatgrass? . Repost @rawplusrewild Antibiotics have a time and place but should only be used when absolutely necessary. And if being used, they need to be properly matched with the bacteria they intend to combat. Over prescribing antibiotics can lead to a host of issues mainly killing off the good bacteria in the gut and creating antibiotic resistance. Without replenishing the healthy, beneficial bacteria our dogs can become vulnerable to health issues. 80% of overall health comes directly from the gut. It’s vital for immunity that the gut remain functioning properly and the bacteria colonies stay balanced. Antibiotic resistance can occur after repeated use and can prolong the original health issue as well as tax the gut and overall immune system. If antibiotics are absolutely necessary, you can help replenish your dog’s good bacteria and service the body with the following: ▪️species-specific probiotics ▪️prebiotics (larch, fermented veggies) ▪️phytoplankton ▪️milk thistle ▪️medicinal mushrooms (turkey tail, chaga) It’s always worth discussing side effects and other alternatives with a holistic vet before administering antibiotics to your pet. There is often other options to explore that do less damage. Truth. Firstly, consider the tremendous array of alternatives available to you; work with a good holistic healthcare advisor/herbalist, TCM trained or homeopathic, classically trained veterinarian, or other wise and knowledgeable healer/practitioner. Alternatives can be incredibly effective without causing additional damage. Avoid antibiotics, unless absolutely necessary, and follow the below suggestions for safer use. 4 FOODS THAT BENEFIT ANY DIET 🥚EGGS Nature’s most complete food! Eggs contain essential amino + fatty acids, antioxidants, protein, and bioavailable nutrients like calcium, zinc, choline, folate, iron, selenium, riboflavin, and vitamins A, D, E, B12 and K. Eggs benefit the entire body including the heart, brain, eyes, and skin + coat. The best eggs come from birds who spend time in the sunlight and get to eat a natural diet. Local, pastured eggs are typically available at most farmers markets + can be fed daily. 🥦BROCCOLI SPROUTS Sprouts are nutritional powerhouses loaded with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, proteins, antioxidants and sulfuraphane. Sulfuraphane is a potent anti-inflammatory known to aid in seizure reduction, gut health, joint protection, and healthy brain and heart function. Also incredibly useful in fighting cancer by deactivating carcinogens, inhibiting tumor growth, fighting free radicals and eliminating potentially cancerous cells from the body. Roughly a pinch or teaspoon a day is all that’s needed. 🦴BONE BROTH Bone broth is full of beneficial collagen which is great for bones, skin, ligaments, tendons + connective tissues. It supports joints and protects against arthritis. It helps heal leaky gut syndrome, reduces inflammation, detoxifies the liver, improves hydration and calms the nervous system. Easy + inexpensive to make at home. Avoid the stuff at the grocery store as it’s often too high in sodium and may contain onions (toxic to dogs). Feed a spoonful/day. 🐳PHYTOPLANKTON Phytoplankton is a natural and sustainable superfood containing trace minerals, chlorophyll, essential amino acids, omega3s, protein, carotenoids, vitamins and powerful antioxidants. It boosts immunity, detoxifies the liver, useful in cell regeneration and joint health. Only 1/16tsp a few times a week is needed! Available through @adoredbeastapothecary All 4 foods can be added to any bowl, although I do recommend trying one new food at a time to make sure your dog tolerates it well. You can then slowly add these foods to the same bowl. They’re incredibly beneficial whether you feed raw, dry kibble, cooked or wet food. Meal breakdown @rawplusrewild

M Y O G L O B I N 🩸🐾 Ever wonder if you should keep the liquid leftover from unpacking thawed meat during meal prep?? It resembles blood but it’s actually water + myoglobin. Myoglobin is a protein whose primary function is to supply oxygen to the cells in muscles (myocytes). It also gives meat it’s red pigment. The darker the meat, the more myoglobin contained within. It’s mostly found in striated muscles like skeletal muscles and the heart muscle. Myoglobin binds to oxygen and delivers it to cells to be used immediately or stored. Cells cannot function properly without adequate oxygen. Myoglobin is also a great source of dietary iron so it’s worth reclaiming and adding back into meals so your dog can capture all its benefits and nutrients. I collect it in a glass jar during preps and then I pour back into my dogs’ containers before freezing. I also constantly forget to do this and am left with a big jar of myoglobin at the end of prep. So in those cases I just pour it into silicone molds and add a cube at each meal. My dogs love it and I feel like it gives them a little boost at each meal. Do you add myoglobin to your pet’s diet? #rawplusrewild #rawfeddogs #rawnutrition #caninenutrition #caninehealth #longevity #myoglobin #blood #rawdogfood #dogfood #rawfeeding #rawdiet #feedraw #speciesappropriate #freshfood #ditchthekibble

H O L I S T I C • V E T • H A U L🧑‍⚕️✨🌀 A few weeks ago we visited our holistic vet for Dojo and Kibbe’s annual exams. Holistic vets are very different from conventional vets. Holistic vets focus on getting to the root of an issue while also recognizing the body as a whole. Conventional vets focus on suppressing symptoms with pharmaceuticals and tend to see the body as pieces and parts that are not interconnected. This was our haul from their last appointment. No pills with side effects, no random prescriptions that ‘might’ work, and no suppression of symptoms, which is the body’s natural way of signaling something is wrong and shouldn’t be ignored. DESICCATED BEEF THYROID @ancestralsupplements Kibbe’s bloodwork was perfect (not bad for 15 yrs old) but Dojo’s thyroid level was a little close to the minimum range. Bloodwork is just a snapshot in time. It’s not always an indication that something is wrong. Dojo looks great, isn’t lethargic or overweight and isn’t showing outward signs of thyroid issues. Rather than put him on a pill, our vet recommended a natural, whole food supplement. Eating grass fed+finished and pasture raised beef thyroid will help to nourish, strengthen and balance Dojo’s thyroid function. THERAPEUTIC GRADE CBD OIL @ambarygardens We also picked up a refill of CBD oil. CBD is so beneficial for senior dogs. It helps to ease pain + inflammation and can help with bouts of stress or anxiety. We’ve been using this brand for a couple of years and love it specifically because it’s full spectrum, formulated for pets, organic, made in USA and we dose by the drop, not by the dropper, so it lasts us a very long time. PORK LARD @fatworks Well sourced, saturated fat is so healthy for dogs. Despite what you may think, fat itself does NOT contribute to obesity. ‘Overfeeding and lack of physical activity are two main components in pet obesity.’ (@perfectlyrawsome) We add about a thumbnail’s worth of pork lard (from pasture raised pigs) to his daily meal to provide more fat to his diet and help stimulate healthy weight gain. All of these products provide targeted support, work in harmony with their bodies and have no side effects.🌀✨

T H E R A P E U T I C • D I E T S❤️‍🩹🥩 Therapeutic diets are extremely useful for dogs with specific health issues who require a more customized diet to target particular conditions. They are a great option for dogs dealing with issues related to the kidneys, liver, heart and pancreas. Therapeutic diets are great for dogs recovering from surgery or dealing with ongoing conditions like cancer. They’re also wonderful for senior dogs who are prone to age related issues like eye degeneration, joint inflammation and cognitive function. Last year, Kibbe (15) and Dojo (14) started to slow down and show signs of aging. A lifetime of being on raw has kept them in incredible shape, but it was time to bring in some extra supplements and supportive foods to help stave off degeneration of their eyes, joints and brains. In addition to a balanced raw diet, we added astaxanthin (💊nestled in a blueberry), MCT oil and blue goo bone broth on a daily basis. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It’s what makes salmon red and flamingos pink! It’s useful for eye health, joint health and cancer prevention. MCT oil is fractionated coconut oil, meaning it only contains medium chain triglycerides which makes this healthy fat easily digestible and assimilated by the liver (not digestive tract). MCT oil improves cognitive function, overall brain health and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Blue goo bone broth is my own personal creation. It combines blue spirulina with bone broth to act as a powerful anti-inflammatory that reduces oxidative stress and joint pain. If your dog is dealing with an ongoing health concern or age related issues, consider switching to a therapeutic diet. It can breathe new life into your dog and aid in their overall health and longevity. Below is a typical meal for Dojo and Kibbe. B L U E B E R R I E S🫐✨ Blueberries are a powerful superfood, loaded with key nutrients that slow down the aging process, support the immune system and fight cancer. They also make a great low cost, low calorie, highly nutritious snack or bowl booster for dogs. Blueberries contain healthy vitamins and minerals such as vitamins K1, C, E and B6 as well as copper and manganese; all of which work together to support the heart, eyes, brain, joints, gut, nervous system and urinary tract. They also contain roughly 10-15% fiber making them an excellent prebiotic and aid to digestive health. The main reason to feed blueberries though is for their extremely high antioxidant count. Antioxidants are vital for combatting free radicals and protecting against oxidative damage. Continual exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, toxic cleaners and pollution as well as a diet high in sugar can lead to an abundance of free radicals in the body. By lending electrons to free radicals, antioxidants prevent cell damage and death and slow down the aging process. The powerful antioxidants in blueberries are also special because they can cross the blood brain barrier and help improve cognitive function in senior dogs. The three main antioxidants found in blueberries are: 🫐 anthocyanins - more than 15 different kinds are concentrated in the skin of the berry and what gives them their blue color 🫐 quercetin - maintains oxidative balance, relieves allergy symptoms and supports the heart 🫐 myricetin - protects healthy cells and helps to prevent cancer and diabetes “Your dog’s immune system has no protection from free radicals. The only way to control them is through diet.” (@dogsnaturallymagazine) Blueberries have more antioxidants than any other fruit, particularly wild and frozen blueberries!! Both frozen berries and wild blueberries carry a higher antioxidant availability so whenever possible seek out organic, wild and/or frozen blueberries for your pup. Just a raw few berries a day, given as a snack or addition to their bowl, is a great way to keep your dog protected from oxidative stress and damage. #foodismedicine
