Earlier this year, I decided I was going to draw every day- in an effort to try and improve my sketching, observation and idea generation skills. I sold it to myself initially by making the minimum requirement that I only had to spend 2 minutes drawing. (But could do more if i chose.) 2 minutes is easy. Foolproof. Acheivable. It's no time at all in the grand scheme of the day. And I know a 2 minute sketch isn't going to be polished. So the perfectionism can ease off. Now I spend about 30 minutes most days, drawing from photo references on my phone. I'm only a few months into this habit I am trying to build, but I think I am gradually improving. And I'm ready to start showing some of the drawings. This Mayan woman is a striking embodiment of her ancient culture, dressed in the traditional attire that has been passed down through generations. Her clothing, rich in history and symbolism, reflects the vibrant tapestry of Mayan heritage. She wears a huipil, a loose-fitting blouse adorned, each design telling a story of her community’s traditions and beliefs. Around her waist, she ties a faja, a woven sash, which adds an extra layer of texture to her attire. Mayan women often carry a canasta (basket) on their head, which is a common practice in many indigenous cultures. The canasta can hold various items depending on the woman’s needs and activities.
