I am thinking some parent thought it up as a game to make the chore of picking up sticks more fun. When I am in the forest, I see so many sticks and branches on the forest floor that I always think about playing pick-up sticks. And that was the inspiration for this piece ... a great reminder to have fun and let your mind wander and be intrigued with all the nature around us. @clarethapeacebell has been one of my biggest inspirations since the first time I heard her spit in like 2015. 🎉 Join us for the reception for the opening of “Becoming,” featuring artwork by Reevah Agarwaal and Lisa DeAbreau, on Saturday, May 4 (4-7 pm), in the gallery's B-Side. The two artists explore postcolonial narratives of girlhood through the lens of memory, feminism, (matrilineal) genealogy, and everyday personal experiences in India (Argarwaal) and Jamaica & Aruba (DeAbreau) as they intersect with their lives in the US. 📌 The artwork signifies catharsis for each artist, representing narratives from their younger years that have shaped their identities today. The show's title suggests that “Becoming” is an ongoing and intersectional process of identity formation for both. While each artist’s family is from a different part of the world, themes of matriarchy and resilience within a postcolonial context connect both artists. Through their distinct artistic perspectives and mixed-media practices, Agarwaal and DeAbreau delve into the complexities of postcolonial memory, particularly focusing on the narratives of girlhood and the resurfacing of histories using vernacular materials and practices. For example, Agarwaal uses family sarees and reclaimed textiles to visualize moments in her life; DeAbreau uses heirloom textiles like doilies and placemats to paint and frame tableaus of vernacular family images. My peice 'Drop Print 57' will be on display at The Lab's up coming show 'The Space Between' along with the work of thirty-one other artists. 'Drop Print 57' is part of a larger body of work comprised of sixty mono-prints whereby I inked a thin strip of rubber, dropped it on sheets of sumi paper, and printed with wood blocks using the weight of my body, increasing the number of drops on each panel by one until the last panel was completely blacked out. Much of my work explores spaces between objects, events and/or time. This void or silence is important in defining what is present, our being present, a mindfulness that allows from a micro to macro scale our ability to experience a reality and recognize interconnections and interdependence between all things. So excited to invite Karen Logan from @draw_derby to run a sketching session in Melbourne! Join us in the Georgian market town of Melbourne, South Derbyshire for a morning of urban sketching on Saturday July 20th 10.30am-12.30pm. All skill levels welcome, from beginners to experienced artists. The session is self-directed and there's no pressure to share what you draw, we’ll be sketching outside so bring appropriate clothing for the British weather! Carpe Diem is back, and happy to announce that our next event will be on May 19th at Place Baudoyer in the 4th arrondisement of Paris. Beginning at 10 am May 19th, 24 artists will assemble for 24 hours and each create a piece from start to finish to raise money for the charitable work of Secours Popularie. Like the Carpe Diem events of the past, we aim to take one day to gather and share our talents, our stories, and our processes with each other and the public. In this simple act, we support community building and engagement while collaborating to assist in the important work of Secours Poulaire. When working collectively, we can affect positive change in just one day. This event is a great opportunity for the public to see the creative processes of the participating artists in action, and for the artists to spend a day together making new connections and catching up with old friends.
