Let's climb to the top of Kotor Fortress. 🇲🇪 The fortifications of Kotor, or Cattaro in Italian, can trace their origin back to Illyrian times. During the Illyrian period a fort was built on the top of St. John Mountain. During the 6th Century AD, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I reconstructed the fortress. In 1420 the independent Republic of Cattaro was conquered by Venice and became part of Albania Veneta. The fortifications we see today were built during the Venetian period. Kotor changed hands several times during the last centuries: Austria (1797), the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy (1805), Russia (1807), back to the French in 1810 and in 1815 it was given back to Austria. The fortress was abandoned at the end of WWI by the Austrians. During WWII, this place was taken over by the Italian Army (1941-1943) and after the Italian defeat by the Germans. And sure, up close, under indoor lighting, these two patterns look remarkably similar. And it's beyond doubt the colour scheme of the Albanian camo is based off the German one. . BUT... Out here in the woods it's a ton easier to notice their differences than similarities. The difference in pattern darkness alone is startling! . I suppose this buttresses the argument of all the German Flecktarn fans that it's very important, yea necessary, to wash and fade that camo immediately. As for myself, I have a visceral aversion to anything that needs to be "fixed" straight out of the packaging. And in this day and age there's so many camos ready to blend on minute one. L'attuale stemma di Rijeka ha invece l'aquila bicipite su fondo porpora. New Camo of the Week: Albanian "Digital Flecktarn". . While this camouflage is often compared to German TF5 Flecktarn due to it having basically the same colour palette, the actual pattern itself is wholly unique. . Nonetheless, because its colours are so similar to classic Bundeswehr 5-colour Flecktarn, it forms a useful point of comparison. Double so since this uniform is faded, so that all the Flecktarn apologists steamed about the use of new, unwashed, and overly dark Fleck being used for camo tests should feel somewhat vindicated. (And, to be fair, once faded these colours do seem to blend into the forest better.) . I haven't seen an actual official Albanian designation for this camo. Or designations?, as there are multiple versions. This is one of the more recent ones, with tiny pictures of Albania within the pattern. It might be M12 or M2012 as it originally debuted in 2012, which is regarded as the country of Albania's centennial. But not going to call it that until I hear from a reputable source. (Perhaps someone like @trashcan.medals can help sort that out for us.) . Anyways, now here you have it.
