L.A. LAW Season 4 Review: #LALaw is finally streaming and I love rewatching the show! I was a fan of the series since it started with that outstanding pilot, but I will always remember that Season 4, originally airing 1989-1990, was outstanding! I will remember it as “the season of ROSALIND SHAYS” and her injection into the show took it to another level. I have to give #MadProps to DIANA MULDAUR who played this pivotal role to perfection. Her character and performance took all the other characters and performances to next level because of their interactions with her. In particular JILL EIKENBERRY (Ann Kelsey) and RICHARD DYSART (Leland McKenzie). Dysart’s performance in the all important partners vote near the end of the season was outstanding. This season was also the season of “The murder case of EARL WILLIAMS”. Earl was a Black man put on trial for killing a white woman—five years before O.J.. The actors chosen to play the Williams family were top notch! The legend BEAH RICHARDS played his mother, VONETTA MCGEE played his wife and CARL LUMBLY played Earl to perfection. I didn’t know how I would feel about this racially charged storyline written by white writers over 30 years ago, but it holds up. Mostly because of the Black actor performances. So great without being patronizing and all “woe is me I’m Black” that some of these TV shows did back then. The season ended with another storyline that wouldn’t seem like a lot, especially during the firm turmoil that was happening, but it wound up being one of the best—ROXANNE’S dad MURRAY played to perfection by VINCENT GARDENIA. I absolutely love to see veteran actors cook and he served up the pièce de résistance. His performance also accentuated SUSAN RUTTAN (Roxanne) who was terrific in that storyline. Of course the season had a lot of other stuff going on and some great legal cases, but these were the standouts. I didn’t find out until after the season that DAVID E. KELLEY was in charge this season as Executive Producer and I became a fan of his ever since. I watched pretty much ALL the shows he created after L.A. Law. Such a prodigious writer at that time. Next up, Season Five!

In 1991 I left for LA to try and get TV work and landed a small role in the top show on TV at the time, LA Law! Thanks to the wonderful Ronnie Yeskal who was a NY Casting agent who had started at LA Law. She hired me to be the security guard that kicked out Harry Hamlin and Jimmy Smits from the firm.
