L’Rain - I Killed Your Dog One of the hardest-to-categorise albums of 2023, I Killed Your Dog builds on the collage approach of 2021's equally genre-defying Fatigue. With her extended cast of musicians, and of course the star of the show, her own voice. L’Rain creates a richly psychedelic sound-world incorporating elements of r’n’b, soul, jazz and lounge rock, without ever feeling like completely one thing. Track titles like ‘I Hate my Friends’ and ‘I Killed Your Dog’ suggest this album was forged in a period of personal turmoil. But rather than a vengeful act of animal cruelty, the layered acapella repetitions of the phrase titular phrase feel more like a therapeutic exercise in mental cleansing. And the hallucinatory approach to atmosphere, where every musical touchpoint seems to have gone through the looking glass, reminds listeners that not everything is as it seems and nothing should be taken at face value. Kim Gordon / Kelsey Lu / L'Rain I wanna start off by saying Circuit Des Yeux was also part of the bill and probably put on an amazing show. UNFORTUNATELY they didn't share a stage. She was just shoved in the tiny back room of the venue and me and Jeremy lost our sweet spot close to the stage because we wanted to go see her but we're sadly met with a sardine can of a room where it was impossible to make out anything going on. (Pic 5/8) This is why I never do festivals lol. But grievances aside, Kim Gordon was so full of life and being my first time seeing any Sonic Youth member I was just happy (eventually) that she is as great an artist and performer as she ever was. Kelsey Lu as filmed put on a great show, meshing orchestral movements with her angelic vocals and was so sweet and seemed to have excellent chemistry with her musicians. The opener L'Rain put on a beautiful hypnogogic performance, starting the show off in high spirits and honestly got me to check out her music today, it's so lush and sounds just as she performed it. Psychedelic guitars, sounds that are one with nature and spirit, and drones that feel like an out of body experience. May have been a hiccup halfway through the night and leading up to it (Stormed like crazy and put me in a bit of a grumpy mood) but all in all I'm glad I went and got to see everyone. 💗 #kimgordon #lrain #kelseylu #circuitdesyeux #knockdowncenter

Taja had broken her ankle I think, and was seated for the duration, this time however there was no restrictions to her movement, nor most of the band, covering practically every inch of the long stage at various points (of which I made an attempt to cover). An absolutely enthralling performance, just incredible!
