Tommy James @tommyjamesandtheshondells is an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer best known as the frontman for the 1960s rock band Tommy James and the Shondells, who are known mainly for their hits “Hanky Panky”, "Mony Mony", "Crimson and Clover", “I Think We’re Alone Now”, “Crystal Blue Persuasion” and others. James went solo later in 1970 and released his first two solo albums on Roulette Records, Tommy James in 1970 and Christian Of The World in 1971. The later album reached #131 on the Billboard 200. James had two further Billboard Hot 100 top 20 chart hits with "Draggin' the Line" and "Three Times in Love" plus eleven lower Hot 100 charting singles. To date, over 300 musicians have recorded versions of James' music. A little countrified Tommy James to kick off the weekend. Tommy was as adept at a good country rock vibe as he was with bubblegum, garage, psychedelia, and straight-up crafted-for-radio pop music. That little pocket of time where he released this, “Tommy James,” “Christian of the World,” and “Travelin’” is a definite high water mark in my personal fandom, though. If I ever start another band, it would have to be contingent upon the fact that we cover “Tell ‘em Willie Boy’s A’Comin’.” . A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of taking in a phenomenal TJ show at the fabulous Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. It’s hands down one of my favorite venues ever. Set up “in the round” with a rotating stage, the lighting and sound is always great and even the cheap seats feel really close. It seems like the type of place a lot of developers would bulldoze in favor of something more “modern.” I hope they never do that with this grand old venue. The list of folks who have played there should ensure it’s place on the mantle as a historical building. In recent years, I’ve seen everybody from Johnny Rivers to Billy Idol to Alice Cooper to Bob Weir there. Hell, even the Bad Brains did a show at the Celebrity. . And how was Tommy James? Fucking amazing. When you have the balls to start the show with “Draggin’ the Line” instead of closing with it, you know it’s gonna be a barnburner of an evening. Read Tommy’s book, if you haven’t. Fascinating story. In my opinion, he’s responsible for crafting some of the greatest tunes of the 20th century. You can hear them once and never forget them. Sa-loot! This one is with the legendary Tommy James of Tommy James and the Shondells fame. If the name doesn't ring a bell directly some of his hits should. The Joan Jett remake of Crimson and Clover was one of her biggest hits (as well as Tommy's) and Billy Idol charted his remake of Mony Mony. I've reignited my Tommy James & the Shondells obsession with a recently acquired "best of" 2 #cassette retrospective.
