Tommy James and The Shondells es una banda que me encanta y me parece, históricamente hablando, profundamente menospreciada. Conocida sobretodo por sus sencillos, como “Hanky Panky”, “Crimson and Clover”, “Mony Mony”, “I think we’re alone now” o “Crystal Blue persuasión”, sin embargo, hicieron también álbumes que deberían ser recordados como algo más que continentes de esos singles. Editado a finales de 1969, Cellophane Symphony es, quizás, su álbum más ambicioso, totalmente influenciado por la psicodelia y anticipador de lo que sería el rock progresivo. Lo produjo el propio Tommy James y lo compuso junto a otros miembros de la banda, como Pete Lucia o Mike Vale, así como su colaborador externo habitual, Ritchie Cordell. 4/6/24 — The Buckinghams / Tommy James & The Shondells I have only been to a few concerts, but this one has to be one of the best I’ve been to so far. I included video clips from both The Buckinghams’ set and Tommy James & The Shondells’ set. Both of them put on an absolutely incredible show. Tommy James’ performance really blew me away, though. During “Mony Mony” he came down to greet some of the audience members and at one point he was literally right in front of me, but I guess I caught a case of being starstruck because I was too nervous to say anything so I just stood there awkwardly while he was talking to somebody LMAO. Hopefully I’ll be less nervous if I see him live again, which I really want to. Anyways, definitely a really incredible show. TOMMY JAMES AND THE SHONDELLS Anthology/EMI 2007 It sometimes happens that you get to know a song and later you realise it’s a cover version. It happened to me so with Tommy James and The Shondells, and not even in case of one, but two songs, and it was during the same year! In 1987 Billy Idol released a live version of "Mony Mony" as a single, and the then-teen sensation Tiffany recorded her rendition of "I Think We’re Alone Now″, both of which were originally issued by Tony James & The Shondells in the late 1960s. Oh, and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" was covered by Morcheeba in 1999. This solid anthology brings 27 songs by the group, recorded between 1963 and 1970. The booklet features photos, the story of the band and – which is a nice thing – comments by Tommy James on his favourite tracks. TJ and the Shondells scored more hits with his band; seven of their singles charted within the US Top 10 – among their best known tracks you might also remember “Crimson And Clover” (covered by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in 1981) or "It's Only Love". Actually, James recorded lots of songs which I now realize I have always known but had no idea who the artist was. The songs the band has conceived are nice pop rock/rock/psychedelic pieces with vocal harmonies and catchy choruses. You can see their musical progression through the sixties is very similar to the Beatles, as well as the influence of the London fashion during the swinging 60s, thats for sure. but when the beatles are talking about holding hands, the Shondells are talking about good ole "hanky panky".
