There must be something in the air or the water when it comes to kids growing up in New Jersey. The De Leo Brothers went on to form Stone Temple Pilots (@stpband) in California but, as younger brother @stpRobertDeLeo says, when he was attending Point Pleasant High School in Ocean County, he breathed music night and day, all kinds of music. He couldn’t get enough of it. When his solo album, ‘Lessons Learned,’ came out last year, he left off the two Gordon Lightfoot covers he had recorded so the project would more accurately reflect his own personal state-of-mind at the time. Earlier this year, he released both songs. New Jersey History: Clyde McPhatter 📰 Inducted posthumously into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, the story of Clyde McPhatter can only be construed as a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. A certifiable 1950s doo-wop legend, his high-pitched tenor fueled Billy Ward & His Dominoes before he formed his own group (and being replaced by Jackie Wilson). The group he formed was The Drifters. Signed by Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records, his Drifters tenure was short, interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Army, and most of the great hits by The Drifters occurred after he left the group. As a solo artist, the hits kept coming but the royalties didn’t. With a career horribly mismanaged, he found himself broke, a legend, but not a success. Back when the drinking age in #NewJersey was 18, clubs all over the state exploded with bands of every imaginable genre from punk to pop, disco to country, metal to funk. @TheAquarianWeekly, an independent alternative newspaper out of Montclair, was the glue that held the scene together. You almost had to get The Aquarian if you wanted to know who was playing where. Musicians had to get The Aquarian for its free classifieds. Many a band formed from its back pages.
