From tomorrow January 20th through March 16th my short film ‘Trên Taranau/Thunder Train’ will be showing at @missiongalleryswansea in Wales, documenting the firing process of Simon Levin’s train kiln here in Pawnee. Here’s the kiln in its peaceful inter-firing phase. Some train kilns such as the smaller one at #guldagergaard are loaded through the roof. We pack this one through the side door visible in the first picture here. Simon’s kiln can fit about 50cu. ft of ware into the 46” tall chamber in three separate stacks (you can see the two side-stoking ports between the stacks at the back of the kiln). The crusty surface of the kiln is just a buildup of the wet ash we paint on mid-firing - this helps seal cracks between the bricks. Near the woodpile at the base of the kiln’s firebox you can see the cleanout hole. Here is where we kindle the fire and feed wood for the first 12 hours or so, before transitioning to the main firebox door high up.  The kiln’s total footprint is 14ft long by 4ft wide with a 20ft high chimney. I’m indebted to @harrison_lev for his excellent blog post on his website which details the process of constructing this kiln over 9 months in 2017. As others have mentioned, it’s an excellent resource for anyone venturing into their own train kiln build.  Simon and I will be firing next in March, we’re currently busy in the studio, keeping warm by the log stove. Toni will employ his techniques which characterises the work he produces. The outcomes will be fired in Toni’s studio and brought back for collection at Mission Gallery. Toni De Jesus was born in the UK in 1995. He grew up in Madeira, Portugal and in 2008 migrated once again to England. This is when he was introduced to ceramics and followed it through by studying a foundation course at City College Brighton and Hove (2013-14). He eventually studied at Cardiff School of Art & Design (2015-18), where he graduated and established his practice. De Jesus is currently based at Fireworks Clay Studios, Cardiff with a prolific collective of ceramicists. He is in the midst of producing a collection represented by J. 🏺 Coiling workshop with Toni De Jesus 🗓️ Saturday 25 November ⏰ 11am - 3pm ☕ Refreshments provided 💌 £50 This workshop will be an opportunity to have a go at hand coiling a vessel using terracotta. Toni will employ his techniques which characterises the work he produces. The outcomes will be fired in Toni’s studio and brought back for collection at Mission Gallery. Toni De Jesus was born in the UK in 1995. He grew up in Madeira, Portugal and in 2008 migrated once again to England. This is when he was introduced to ceramics and followed it through by studying a foundation course at City College Brighton and Hove (2013-14). He eventually studied at Cardiff School of Art & Design (2015-18), where he graduated and established his practice. De Jesus is currently based at Fireworks Clay Studios, Cardiff with a prolific collective of ceramicists. He is in the midst of producing a collection represented by J.
