I was happy and proud to present two incredible artists in dialogue this springtime in New York - Olga Chernysheva and Marko Mäetamm. Central theme of the booth presentation is mundanity, from which both artists draw their inspiration. Marko Mäetamm is speaking mostly about human interaction in everyday life. His main interest is relations within the family, couple, friends or professional circle, which he shows in ironical and hyperbolizing manner. In his oeuvre, conceptualism influenced by pop art crosses paths with existential philosophy, and through the artist’s point of view the angst-ridden absurdity of existence finds its way into graphic art infused with black humor. Olga Chernysheva is more of a distant observer of everyday life in the city, of passerbys she’s not acquainted with. Yet she renders these situations with a lot of empathy, seeing mundanity as a lyrical, poetical experience. If she uses humor, it’s always subtle and tender. Olga Chernysheva was in residency in Drawing Center NY and had a solo show there in 2016. Some of the drawings at the booth were produced in that residency. Her mother died in 2020, but was survived by an identical twin sister, who appears in Lynne’s images with her face hidden behind leaves or with her entire body blurred. I’m delighted to show new paintings from my current body at NADA New York, together with Spencer Brownstone Gallery. - I’m honored to be included with the other artists Krista Clark and Szabolcs Veres. May 2 -5 / 548 West 22nd Street, NY, NY 10011 / booth 1.09 My new work emerges from a deep engagement with the spectrum of natural colors, driven by my extensive research of earth tones, as well as my continued observation of liminal light situations in nature, combined with the study of Renaissance color. My particular interest and focus were shaped once I realized that there is an alignment between Renaissance color and non-digital tonality. Over the course of the last few years, I’ve been exploring the “pre-digital age” and natural color spectrum - it’s been absolutely fascinating to immerse myself in this highly evolved color sensibility, and to explore the soothing effect these colors have in general, and the individual role each of them plays in the natural color cosmos. My painting “Alex’s Garden” is a very personal painting, made in memory of my brother-like friend Alex, who loved gardening and who passed away recently. At the same time, it is an exploration and manifestation of the green earth pigment. The presentation is accompanied by the release of my second chapter book for featuring a painting, - and it’s available at the gallery booth, at art books cologne, and through my studio. A quote from the book: "Green earth has been appearing in different cultures and over an extended period of time in history. In painting, it was a fresco color in ancient Rome, and a really profound color and pigment in the Renaissance. It is also the tone of the color “mi se green”, which translates to “mysterious green” in ancient China.” I’ve come to think of the process of turning to the past in order to make sense of the present (some kind of) my credo, found through the process - alongside an ongoing desire to go deeper and deeper into the subject matter.
