The National Museum of Korea's artifact management has been questioned following a local temple's claim that the hands of two cast iron Buddhist statues have gone missing under the museum's care. "The two Buddhist statues are important religious artifacts, and the fact that the hands are missing is incredibly regretful," said Heunglyong Temple in Pocheon, Gyeonggi, on Tuesday. The temple said it has requested "a clear explanation from the museum and if the museum has been derelict about the statues' management." It has not yet received a response. Some Buddha statues, like the Unfinished Buddha in Indonesia, were intentionally created without certain body parts, including hands. This, however, isn't the case for the two statues. Buddha's Birthday is a notable public holiday in Korea, so it seemed appropriate for me to check out the National Museum's new special exhibition on "The Great Assembly at Vulture Peak", an enormous Buddhist painting or a gwaebol (괘불), a sight that is traditionally reserved for only special occasions. "The National Museum of Korea is hosting The Great Assembly at Vulture Peak: The Gwaebul at Yeongsusa Temple in Jincheon as the nineteenth installation in its gwaebul exhibition series. Gwaebul refers to large-scale Buddhist paintings hung outdoors in temple yards during grand rituals or on special occasions like Buddha’s Birthday. They are a type of heritage that cannot be seen only on rare occasions. "The Gwaebul at Yeongsusa Temple in Jincheon (national treasure) was produced in 1653 (the fourth year of the reign of King Hyeonjong). It depicts a gathering to attend a sermon held long ago by Shakyamuni Buddha on Vulture Peak in Rajgir, India. In the center of the large painting are Shakyamuni Buddha and Sariputta, who is sitting tidily in front of him while listening to the Buddha’s story of enlightenment. Several disciples, arhats, Bodhisattvas, and celestial beings surround them as they hear the Buddha’s teachings. After my day in Itaewon, I went to visit the @nationalmuseumofkorea in Seobinggo-ro, in which I spent hours walking around and only managed to see half of the building and the artifacts displayed within. Truly, the museum itself is a work of art and gorgeously designed inside and out. The next time I come to Seoul, I'm making sure to arrive in the morning so I can complete touring inside and around the gardens outside. "2024년 5월 7일-5월 10일“ 전문해설사가 진행하는 해설 중에는 상설해설과 예약해설 외에도 특별해설이라는 것이 있다. 한국에 거주하거나, 한국어를 공부하기 위해 방문한 외국인들에게 해설을 해주고, 간단한 체험도 제공하는 프로그램이다. 올해는 새롭게 다문화센터와 협업해 다문화 거주자를 대상으로 하는 특별해설 프로그램을 시작했다. 한국어 구사력이 사람마다 달라서 한국어로 한 문장, 바로 영어로 한 문장, 계속 번갈아가며 해설하느라 조금 힘들었지만 그래도 재밌었다. 관람객들의 반응도 좋았다. 행사가 다 끝난 뒤에 관람객들이 선생님이랑 사진 찍고 싶다고 쭈뼛쭈뼛 다가왔는데 그 모습도 너무 귀여웠다. 해설하고, 밥 마시고, 다시 해설하는 빡센 일정이었지만 몸이 고달픈만큼 뿌듯함이 큰 해설이었다. #국립중앙박물관 #nationalmuseumofkorea #일상시리즈 #해설사의삶 + 해설도 많고, 행사도 많아 정말 피곤하지만 해설이 너무 좋았다는 칭찬만 들으면 다시 또 힘이 난다.

“2024년 5월 2일-5월 5일” 괘불이 왔다. 올해의 괘불은 진천 영수사 괘불. 해설은 괘불이 있을 때와 없을 때로 나뉜다고 감히 말할 수 있다. 그 정도로 괘불의 임팩트는 정말 강하다. 그래서 괘불이 걸리면 바로 해설할 수 있도록 한참 전부터 미리 공부하고, 해설을 연습하곤 한다. 이렇게 열심히 준비한 괘불 해설을 하러 불교회화실에 들어가는 순간, 모든 관람객의 입에서 탄성이 나온다. ”WOW!“ 해설이 딱 절반에 이르렀을 때, 마침 다리가 아파오는 시기에 괘불 앞 의자에 앉아서 괘불을 올려다보면 다리는 편하고 눈은 호강하는 기분이 드나보다. 막상 나는 늘 괘불을 등지고, 관람객을 바라보며 해설하지만 관람객의 황홀한 눈빛과 반응이 반가워서 나는 괘불이 전시된 시기가 참 좋다. 낯가림 기간이라 내 눈에도, 내 입에도 아직은 좀 어색하지만 영수사 괘불과 차차 친해지기로 한다. #국립중앙박물관 #nationalmuseumofkorea #일상시리즈 #해설사의삶

👑 La Corée abrite le plus grand nombre de couronnes en or au monde, dont sept proviennent du royaume de Silla. Pourquoi ces couronnes sont-elles si spéciales ? Elles ne sont pas seulement des objets de beauté, mais aussi des symboles puissants. 🎗️ Fabriquées avec des feuilles de métal doré martelées, ces couronnes délicates comportent des ramures en forme de trident, évoquant des arbres, des montagnes ou même des ailes d'oiseau. Les dents de tigre en jade ajoutées parfois symbolisaient la force et l'autorité du roi. Pour les anciens Silla, le cerf et les arbres étaient des messagers du ciel, et l'or symbolisait l'éternité. 🕯️ Les couronnes, ornées de branches ressemblant à des bois de cerf et à des arbres, étaient portées par les rois pour montrer leur détermination à protéger leur peuple, même après leur mort. 🪞 Les couronnes ont évoluées au fil du temps, passant par trois phases distinctes.
