I don’t really chase rare birds when they show up in our area. Having said that all of the rare birds that I have seen have been a result of a tip from a friend. So I was really not expecting to come across, quite by accident, an American Bittern on my walk over the weekend. When you consider that they aren’t common here, are pretty secretive and they are incredibly well camouflaged my chances of actually seeing one, never mind photographing one, are pretty remote.
